English soccer stars are pleading with their countrymen via Twitter to stop the riots that are plaguing London and other major cities.

"These riots are nuts why would people do this to there (sic) own country. Own city," striker Wayne Rooney tweeted Monday. "This is embarrassing for our country. Stop please."

The violence and looting prompted the cancellation of a friendly between England and the Netherlands Wednesday at London's Wembley Stadium.

Defender Rio Ferdinand categorized the unrest as "madness" and wondered if increased military presence would restore some order.

"It seems these kids/people have no fear or respect for the police....maybe the army will get that respect??" Ferdinand tweeted. "The presence of the army may make these kids/people think twice about continuing this??"
