After McIlroy's double bogey on the 18th hole gave him a first-round 70 at the Irish Open, Townsend did some critiquing in 140-character bursts.
"McIlroy's course management was shocking," he tweeted. "He should hire Steve Williams as I thought JP allowed some SHOCKING course management today."
Townsend's criticism focused on the decision by McIlroy and
Fitzgerald to use a driver off the last hole, instead of laying up like
his playing partners. The drive ended up in a fairway bunker.
Later, Townsend took his opinion of the decision-making a step farther.
"Some of the worst course management I have ever seen beyond under 10s boys competition."That was enough for the 22-year-old to fire back.
"Shut up... You're a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing!" McIlroy tweeted.
