In most traditional Spanish Bullfights, the bull is killed whether it puts up a fight or not. As soon as the bull enters the arena, his fate has been determined. It's absolutely disgusting and while I'm sure this man has a long road of suffering ahead of him, I feel no sympathy for him. I can't believe things like this are still legal anywhere in the world. And what does it say about the people who enjoy watching the torment of an animal as entertainment? People who sit around and cheer while a man like that puts on a "show" before "delivering the death blow" to an animal that never had a choice are sick.

Sure, the horn in the throat is graphic, but not as graphic and disgusting as the swords that are needlessly plunged into the spinal columns of countless bulls as their certain death that occurs for "entertainment." I find the mutilation of animal abusers far more entertaining. My wishes to Julio Aparicio for a painful, humiliating, and incomplete recovery.

I'm afraid the animal survived. Regretfully, they did kill the bull. Personally I think they should remove the genitals, not only of the bull-murderers, but also of the people that find pleasure in watching those mental defects torturing and murdering these beautiful animals. I think the bull is already dying by the time the matador enters the ring; it is stuck with several spears in two previous "rounds" so it weakens as it bleeds, making it easier to defeat as time goes on. Very cruel.

Ok so one thing that Americans and others outside of Spain needs to understand is that the practice of bullfighting is a deeply historical and cultural thing to the people of Spain. It is not to look cool, but to be a part of a centuries old traditional of your country.

Another thing is that people from Spain are no more inhuman to animals than any other culture around the world. Americans are just as terrible to animals. Just ask PETA. They will give you a list of things. Just think. You eat animals for dinner everyday (unless you are a vegetarian or a vegan) Sometimes those cows that your cheeseburger came from were smashed in the head and hung upside down as they bled to death before they were made into patties. Just because it isn't a watched spectacle doesn't mean that its not as bad.

Last thing. Despite all this I am not surprised that he was hurt. Its incredibly dangerous and he was probably aware of that danger. Also that bull was doing what any other creature would do... which is protect its life. I don't blame the bull at all, and I also don't necessarily count this as a tragedy.

It is very easy for all of you to speak from ignorance.
The bullfighting in Spain is an ancestral tradition. A bullfighter risks his life every time he jumps into the ring, and is something literal. The spanish bull is an animal that would be extincted if wouldn't exist bullfighting. It's a show that moves a lot of money and thanks to it, many families live. It is very widespread in France and also in South America. But most importantly, it is scientifically proven that the bull does not suffer. The Spanish bull is a unique breed, bred to participate in fights. It is a fierce fighter, and anger and excitement that uses in the ring, cancels its sensitivity. Again, it is scientifically proven.
For me it is also cruel to invade a third world country with super sophisticated war toys. But you grow believing that in the name of the American flag all is forgivable.
I have grown seeing bullfighting as an art, as a wonderfull spectacle. That is for me.
Fortunately Aparicio is well and will soon return to fight.
I prefer the human race before animals, despite people like all of you.

You're wrong. A vast majority of spaniards are against bullfighting, around a 75%. But it almost reaches a 100% in younger generations.
As an ancient show it's very related to the conservative high classes, people like the Duchess of Alba, or members of the Royal Family are supporters. So it's very hard to fight back.

Anonymous, you are so ignorant. I grew up in Spain an if you knew how honoralble it was for the bull to die in such a manner you wouldnt be saying such things. The bulls are pampered their entire lives, treated better than dogs and cats in the U.S. When the day comes they continue to fight to the death never retreating never saying to themselves, "Ouch this really hurts I think I will stop charging the matador because I dont want to die." These animals are breed for this and they love the the challenge of a fight much like a gladiator. What Americans dont know is that after the bull dies he is honoralblly carried away by four mules to the back of the bull ring where he is butchered right there and the meat is given to the poor who go home and feed their families. The poor line up for blocks out side the bull ring to recieve the meat. Many starving family (that dont have access to food stamps and gov't assistance progams) have been blessed by the bull meat. And yes I have seen bulls spared from death if the crowd believes that the bull has put an exceptional fight. The bull is spared and dies of old age in some green pasture fathering many more brave bulls that will some day feed the poor people of Spain. Matadors never claim to be heros but give the honor to the bull for going out fighting.

There are many facets of Spanish culture that are not violent but bull fighting is what most Americans think of when they think of Spain because a gory bull fight will get more ratings or sell more papers then other cultural events. Maybe it's time we start to notice other cultural contributions by Spaniards in other areas like music, amazing food, art,.......

That bull should be canonized by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of all bulls that are condemned to die in bull fights around the uncivilized world; and even humans that are bullied everyday. Saint Bull...we wish we knew your name, patron saint of all the victims of bullies, pray for us!

The point of "tormenting/torturing" the bull is not to goad the bull, it is to injure the bull's neck muscles so that it can no longer keep it's head up. If that isn't done then the matador will not be able to administer the killing stroke which is done past the head and down into the back, severing a major artery. This doesn't make the bull's sufferening any less painful but it does serve a purpose besides bloodletting.

And for what it's worth, these bulls have it good. Even with their death in the arena included most cattle will never come close to having as good a life as a spanish fighting bull. These animals are bred and treated like champion race horses, though with a minimum of human interaction.

Unfortunately, after the matador was gored, someone else most likely came in and finished off the bull. Whether the bull gets the best of the fighter, he is always killed at the end... from what I heard/saw when I was over there. And no, I didn't go to a bull fight, nor did I want to, but while I was there I understood that it was their culture. And, whether I liked it or not (which I did not), I respected their culture.

It seems that quite a few people are trying to defend "the Spanish way of life" by saying bull fighting is part of their culture and history, and by saying how heroic and brave it is to kill an animal like this. I'm sure the bull wouldn't agree with this.

Certain radical participators of a particular religion claim it's right and heroic to blow themselves up, killing as many people along with them. It doesn't matter what religion, race or skin color their victims are. It's part of their history, culture and religion to come to such a deed. That doesn't justify their actions however.

I don't care what Spanish people think about bull fighting. The fact that so many people seem to think that history and culture justify human actions, resulting in the slaughtering of an innocent animal for one purpose only which is pleasure, does not make it right. There is a difference between killing an animal for food, or killing an animal for pure pleasure (which is, in the end what bull fighting is, no matter how you twist or turn it). In my opinion you have to be pretty damn sick in the head to torture any kind of animal.

It's funny, In Spain(mostly in the southern tip), Italy, and France they kill bulls, but other Europeans made a sport out of killing Africans, and people from India...for fun (people tend to ignore that conveniently).

Also, not all Bullfights are lethal, most are actually non-violent sports (Running of the Bulls, BullJumping ,etc). BullFighting is actually the most recent form of bull sports in Europe and is practiced throughout much of Europe, not just Spain. But I guess that doesn't get as many people stirred up emotionally for news ratings.

Bullfighing's practically dead , Europeans are a very liberal crowd nowadayz, that stuff just isn't really done much (or relevant) anymore. Most Bullfighting rings are museums.

If you're worried about animals, fast food is the real danger. Millions of animals are killed every year in that industry alone, and they ain't too respectful to the animals.

Though I'd like to see violent Bullfights end all over Europe (other non-violent forms are harmless to the animals), I'm much more worried about the people living under Europe (read: Africa). I don't get why that region is ignored so often.

These matadors are obviously suffering from anatomical inadequacies, hence the prancing around in sequins and tights,trying to spear and slice dumb innocent animals. Machismo? Yeah right.

While initially being repulsed by the image I did then laugh and think yay for the bull.

Traditions are not always humane nor acceptable in a 'civilised' society. Its about time the backward thinking neanderthals that support this practice dragged themselves into the 21st century.

I find it interesting that so many "loving" people wish only the worst injured person. An evil person wishes harm upon his fellow man. I hope Mr. Apricio makes a full recovery from this accident.

And what makes it even more tragic? - that there are actually human beings in the world who can read this and react by saying "Go bulls," "karma's a bitch," and "this man is sadistic." It is a very sad day for our society, for humanity, when its members actually think it intelligent and reasonable to equate the life of a human being to that of an animal. We are not equal. Bulls are saved in Bullfights all the time. When they fight valiantly they are spared and put out to stud. The bulls natural instincts is to fight . It loves it. I've come in to this a bit late. It's all been said before me, and very articulately. All you defenders of the Corrida (Bullfighting)such as Jessica, Juan, Proud2bspanish, etc. has it occurred to you that you seem to be heavily outnumbered? Labeling all protesters Liberals is just as ridiculously absurd as your premise that it is an ancient tradition, takes courage. I say BULL SHIT! That explanation doesn't make it any less cruel. The Circus Maximus was a tradition ... however, it ceased to exist, as did the Spanish Inquisition (some sport, eh?). Yes, we in the US & UK kill animals, but to survive, not as a spectator sport. The bottom line and the horror of it is that in Spain and Mexico this is considered entertainment.

Yeah, it's great the bull won. But how about the thousands of bulls, chickens, pigs and others who are killed every minute for food? Do they deserve it as well? Will you celebrate their liberation too? If yes, then stop eating animal products, for the torture is the same.

It is apparent that the majority of the posters here have not lived for any amount of time in Spain and become accustomed with their customs; not ours, but theirs. I have lived there and spent nearly 2 decades enjoying the dance between man and beast. First let me point out that when the bull is slaughtered, the meat goes to the orphanages. Next please note that this custom of bullfighting, which use to be called bull-baiting is as old or older than Christianity. It is not a sport; it is much more like ballet. The bulls live away from humans their entire life and do not encounter any until they are chosen for either the ring, or for simple slaughter. Sometimes when a bull is particularly brave they are spared at the end, but the have to exhibit absolute bravery, not dumb luck.

When I see uninformed people making comments about wanting the animal to kill the matador, it makes me realize how ignorance is bliss. It also makes me ashamed to call myself an American. It is the main reason I never sat "in the sun" because that's where Americans sat. I prefer to sit with true "aficionados", sip some wine from a bota and enjoy a good cigar (thank God you can still smoke a cigar somewhere in the world).

Do those miserable bulls have this chance in the slaughterhouse? I understand that in the US there is no culture for real fight between man and beast but shooting them down from a safe distance. In the US people licking their little puddle`s ass and running to the vet if those little rats cough once.
