Garciaparra played for the team from 1996-2004 before splitting time with the Cubs, Dodgers and Athletics. His one-day contract will allow him to retire as a member of the team with whom he had his best seasons.
The two-time batting champion will join ESPN as an analyst.
Know for his elaborate actions in the batter box, the shortstop was a fan favorite who won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1997 and finished second in the league's MVP voting the following year.
