The Minnesota Twins have locked up superstar catcher Joe Mauer for a long, long time.
Mauer, a St. Paul native, agreed to an eight-year, $184 million contract that will keep him playing for his hometown team through the 2018 season.
The former No. 1 overall draft pick has played up to his enormous hype thus far in his career. He'll carry a .327 lifetime batting average into this season and won the American League MVP in 2009.
And, and a result, he's being handsomely rewarded.
Mauer's contract is the fourth-largest in Major League history, ranking behind deals given to Alex Rodriguez (one in 2001, another in 2008) and Derek Jeter (2001).
