Johnny Weir staying in Olympic village due to 'threats' over fur costume

johnny-weir-fur.JPGColorful U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir says he is worried about his safety after receiving "very serious threats" from anti-fur activists.

Weir got the animal-rights activists all worked up when he wore white fox fur on his costume during the free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

"I totally get the dirtiness of the fur industry and how terrible it is to animals. But it's not something that's the No. 1 priority in my life," Weir said after his wardrobe sparked fiercely-worded letters and threats. "There are humans dying everyday. There are thousands if not millions of homeless people in New York City. Look at what just happened in Haiti.

"I tend to focus my energy, if there is a cause, on humans. While that may be callous and bad of me, it's my choice."
He'd spoken about staying in a hotel over the Olympic village, but said that arranging security at a hotel would have been too difficult. Currently, he's staying in the village, sharing a suite with ice dancer Tanith Belbin.

it is a callous attitude he is taking but like everything in life we all have choices to make and those choices always come with consequences. He now knows the consequences of his choice to wear dead animals on his back...and these are tortured dead animals that suffered and died horrific deaths. To minimize this human inflicted suffering on animals because as he stated "There are humans dying everyday." is the biggest hypocrisy and excuse of all time.
If his priority is really to alleviate human suffering why is he choosing a self-aggrandizing path of fame and fortune instead of out there HELPING these humans that he says are his priority??
Because we all know none of this is his priority at all. Self aggrandizement is the priority, he's just upset because he got called on his integrity and character.

What a little piece of *. He says its not a "priority" to not wear fur? It's not like its something you have to work at. No one is asking him to go into the forest and steel traps. You just don't do it! You have a choice of what to wear, don't wear fur! It's that simple! I personally will be cheering for his competition. He's not skating for America, he's skating for himself.

I notice you have written that Johnny is sharing a suit at the Olympic village with Tanith Belbin. I hope you mean a suite!

I adore him, and i hate the fact that he is put in such a bad situation so close to the competition, i hope it does not hurt him.

That boy has more to worry about than fur. I believe he is a little light in the loafers.

MDLA says "You have a choice of what to wear, don't wear fur!" Apparently he doesn't have a choice. At least he won't if the militant animal rights activists had their way. Once apon a time this was a free country. I applaud Jonny for using this sustainable material nature has provided, rather than relying on the byproducts of foriegn oil.

These anti-fur nazis have to get a grip.

I agree with Matt. I thought the US was free country where you can choose what you want to wear and eat what you want to eat. I am glad to see Johnny Weir wearing fur...a natural and renewable resource. Animal products have helped humans survive for centuries.

I don't understand why the anti-fur people are threatening him when most people wear leather and eat meat. The fox trim is a nice, classy touch to his outfit; he did nothing wrong.
