Michigan State to unveil new logo in April

michigan-state-logo.jpgIs this ridiculous thing on the right the new face of Michigan State?

UPDATE: It looks like the widespread panic about this may be a little premature, according to a follow-up post on this same subject.

Those of you who hold on to and value traditions understand what it's like when someone messes with those things you've held dear.

That's exactly what a bunch of Michigan State alums and backers are going through right now in the wake of the news the school's logo might be undergoing a transformation.

The classic Spartans gladiator helmet will get a makeover this spring, according to Heather Swain, Assistant Vice President for University Relations, and the school will make an official announcement in April.

The reported new design is, in a word, awful.
The change, it seems, is part of a partnership with athletic-gear juggernaut Nike. This is apparently the product of a two-year collaboration between the MSU athletic department and top designers from the company.

Again, this logo took two years of work.

Unofficially, there certainly appears to be a high level of backlash. The poll attached to the MLive story currently has 84 percent of people in favor of the old logo, as opposed to 6 percent favoring the new one.

It's understandable.

To me, it looks like a cheap clip art piece. I'm not sure what is wrong with the classic Spartan head. And, it feels like this is all about the dollar, which makes it even worse.

Does anyone out there care to defend this new logo, or are you green-and-white-blooded readers as upset as I am about this?

That thing on the right is a travesty.

I am a recent alumni, and can honestly say this is straight dumb. This is just like when MSU jumped on the 300 movie bandwagon and changed our entire Football intro into some lame scene from the movie. I am not alone when I say that this would be a terrible mistake.

If they are not going to bring back the block S, than they should do nothing at all. The logo on the right is ridiculous. Tell Nike to keep their money!

That thing is hideous. Stupid, stupid move.

The only good thing about the new logo is that there is likely to be some cheap "old logo" items for sale come this Spring. As my entire man-cave basement is decked out in MSU propaganda, this alumnus will gladly buy the old logo stuff at (hopefully) fire sale prices. Let's hope this becomes reality, because I damn sure won't be buying anything with that new abomination on it...

Of course Nike likes the new one-- it must be a lot easier for Asian children to embroider than the old one!

Absolutely godawful. There are no words to describe my contempt for this new logo. I just pray that this was a mock-up and the final, official version is much different. Or they just leave greatness alone.

This new logo is an abomination.

If you agree please write Mark Hollis and/or the admin. Also please feel free to join JUST DON'T - No new Nike-influenced Spartan helmet on Facebook.

The new logo blows. Demand excellence and make a logo shaped like the log I dropped this morning. You are all dorks. Narduzzi sucks.

Them Nike designers sure are a talented bunch. The impressive part is it only took two years to develop this amazing piece of art.

Guys, my real name is go disc golf. I change my username to avoid detection because I am a wimp. I love the new logo.

does Dr. Strangelove make house calls?

We're not as upset as you are, we're more upset. Hell, there is already a Facebook page with over 7,200 people that are against this abomination. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=263240699476

SAVE OUR SPARTAN LOGO!

As a current MSU student, I can guarantee there is ZERO support for this logo amongst the student body. If this gets the official green light, there will be a campus-wide (and hopefully national) boycott of all future Spartan apparel. I hope Nike enjoys that.

Unforgivable if this thing actually becomes the new logo for MSU. It's a shame that MSU is permitting Nike to dictate a marketing image. MSU, please tell me/us what is wrong with the exisiting logo. Too expensive for Nike to manufacture? So this comes down to money? Don't you charge enough for those tickets to games and parking? Come on MSU, LISTEN to the alumni and fans. This new logo is horrible. DON'T CHANGE A THING!

This logo is as bad as the Oregon Ducks football jerseys. Nike is terrible when it comes to design and the fact that this logo progressed this far within the MSU Athletic Department is embarrassing.

The logo is awful and a disgrace to MSU. It is like a sick joke.
Not even for FREE could you get me to wear it.

I'm a student at MSU and this is horrible...that thing is a true travesty. There is also talk of changing Spartan Green to a completely different shade. Nike can shove a new color, new uniforms, and that god awful thing they're calling a Spartan Helmet right up their rears.

I truly can't believe this is even a consideration.

Please, please, please, don't make that ridiculous thing the logo of my school.

Tradition is important to any successful organization and the image of a university with such a storied past needs to maintained. Why mess with a good thing. Can you imagine the Detroit Tigers changing the design of their home white jerseys? It is as silly as the Lions putting black in their color scheme. Do you think U of M would change the wing helmet design? What genius came up with this idea?

im an alum and current grad student here. this is ridiculous. why is the school allowing a company to control what design is associated with the school. whats worse is the design has been changed to look more similar to the USC trojans logo.

I keep hearing how a new logo is part of some comprehensive "package" and that no one image can properly convey its effect. I disagree completely. The Spartan logo is the single proudest, most profound icon of Michigan State as a university, athletic program, and nationwide entity. Our helmet is a standard bearer in the Big Ten and college sports in general; it is what gives us Spartans our identity. I honestly do not find any identity, any pride, or anything remotely profound in this new monstrosity of a logo, other than a profound sadness and urge to vomit when I see it. The new design shows signs of unnecessary change for the sake of change and an overall clumsiness. Some might say "it's just a logo," but for the Green & White, our Spartan is our symbol of excellence. Giving into corporate greed in favor of a substandard product is a slap in the face of each and every one of us who wear our logo proudly. I am cautiously hopeful that the disapproving cries of the people who should really count in this situation-- not Nike, not the marketers, but our alumni and fans-- will be the final voices heard as this new "package" is marked off as a poor idea and put to rest.

It looks like a well-hung elephant.

Wow. If that's the new logo, and it took two years, I'm frightened. None of the lines in the new logo are crisp at all; they all have inconsistencies while the old logo is sharp at every cut.

Despite the fact that the logo appears to be changing, it's good to see that at MSU old prejudices are still intact

This new logo is ridiculous. Why does MSU want to send a message to the public (and, by the way, to potential recruits) that we need to resort to logo changes and other "flashy" and "tacky" marketing gimmicks to market our sports programs(especially our football program) because they cannot be marketed based upon quality on the field/court, etc? To me, logo and uniform changes are indicative of poor programs or programs (like the football program) that are in trouble. Remember the absurd "striped" uniforms briefly adopted during the John L. Smith era? What an embarrassment!!!

If you want to project the image of a proud, strong tradition of quality sports programs, have some respect for your own traditions and preserve and celebrate your own traditional colors, logos, and uniforms and DO NOT let ANY sports apparel or equipment supplier dictate those things.

Doesn't this remind anyone of the Detroit Pistons' disastrous and failed change to the teal colors, logos, and uniforms?

Massage to MSU: IF THIS NEW LOGO IS ADOPTED, I WILL DISCONTINUE MY LONG-STANDING ANNUAL DONATION TO MSU ATHLETICS.
