Los Angeles Clippers announcer Michael Smith is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges stemming from an alleged theft of $735,000 from a development deal gone bad.
According to prosecutors, Smith persuaded his friend, a retired school teacher with an inoperable brain tumor, to put up his paid-off Dana Point home in January 2008 as collateral for a $735,000 loan, so Smith and business partner Bruce Furst could develop land in Dana Point. Prosecutors said the pair lied and said the loan was safe and would be 100 percent guaranteed.In November, Smith and fellow Fox Sports Prime Ticket broadcaster Ralph Lawler were suspended one game for making off-color comments about Iranian-born Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi.
He should be instantly fired. There's no doubt about it.
I played high school footbal against Mike Smith & the Los Altos team. They were a local powerhouse and he was a talented quarterback. I sure hope there is more to it than what I've read so far that would cast him in a better light that he is in now. There has to be a way to save the poor old man from losing his home...
