Fox News' Brit Hume says Tiger Woods needs to become a Christian on-air

| 57 Comments | No TrackBacks

Fox News' Brit Hume has obviously spent some time worrying about the ultimate fate of Tiger Woods' soul.

He apparently felt compelled to share his concerns with a national audience Sunday.

"The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith," Hume said. "He is said to be a Buddhist. I don't think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So, my message to Tiger is, 'Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world."

Remember, that's a newsman offering advice to the beleaguered golfer, not a religious pundit. Hume is a senior political analyst, so why is he doing his Bible-thumping on one of the station's news programs?

Brit Hume suffers from hubris, as do many newscasters and politicians these days. The newscasters think the news is about them, and the politicians think the taxes the government collects is their cookie jar.
And religion has no place in the newsroom, unless it's part of the story, or in Congress.

Dennis Manuel

I think he should be fired by fox immediately. This is unbelievable.

ugh. John Ensign, Mark Sanford, LA Sen. David Vitter, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, John Edwards: all "devoted Christians" before and during their transgressions. And Hume! He had an extramarital affair! Do these men think that being a Christian is a get-out-of-trouble card.

Sin, be forgiven and as a result be more holy?

holier-than-thou maybe.

Hume's is a disgusting but revelatory comment, and unfortunately, too typical of people who seem to think of themselves as Christians because they're such terrific sinners!

I am very proud of Brit Hume.

I find it interesting that the media is given license to reveal a multitude of information that can potentially harm others, but as soon as a member of the media attempts to offer a solution, out come the poisonous darts to attack a message meant to aide in the healing of more than one individual.

It is a very sad state of affairs when all you expect from a member of the media is a body with no heart. Brit Hume choose to share his heart and that in my book is very admiral!

I agree with Brit. I think he stated the message well. I was impressed with Brit and feel he should be did a great job!

I saw that, and I thought it was a rather ignorant and kind of arrogant comment.

Does he know anything about Buddhism? Does anybody at Fox News know anything about any culture that has it's foundations outside of the US? That's what really struck me about the comment, I just thought to myself "What does this guy know about Buddhism?" I'm guessing probably nothing.

I don't really have a problem with him sharing religious views on TV, it's more that he had to slam another religion in order to do it. Christianity isn't the only thing in the world that people find strength in. Millions, no, billions of people have found more comfort in Buddhism than in Christianity (as well as many other religions including Islam, Hinduism, etc).

Then again, it's people like this that have escalated the whole Tiger Woods thing out of proportion. Who is he to give Tiger Woods such drastic life advise as "Change your religion" when it's been the news and tabloids that have made the situation even worse? You can help Tiger Woods more by not constantly talking about it and plastering it all over the TV.

Hello Americans. We have the freedom to worship as we choose and also the freedom to talk about our religious beliefs. If you find brit Hume so heinous change stations. Bill Maher hates Christianity. You can find your solace there.

Hopefully Hume's son found that same "redemption" from Christ as well before killing himself.

It's amazing how accomodating the public can be when someone wants to tear someone down or assisinate their character, but a sincere offer of advice can bring out such venom.

"He should be fired immediately", "I hope his son found that same 'redemption' from Christ as well before killing himself."

What is it about Christianity that draws out such hostile and offensive responses?

By the way, I do believe even Christians are protected by the first ammendment.

As a Buddhist I am deeply offended by Mr Humes comments.

He is HOLIER THAN ME I suppose.

I think Tiger needs to redeem himself I agree with Brit hume there, but maybe a Better Faith would be Islam, Christianity has its flawed and makes more people angry then any other Faith out there.

I would just Move forward and Move on Don't be a Face in a Crowd Be a Man who walks away from it, Muhammad would be a better for Tiger then Jesus Islam is the Last Resort in Religion.

Accept Allah or Don't accpet God Its up to him.

Being Buddhist isn't good enough? He should become a fake Christian for the press value? So being a Christian is "better" than being Buddhist? That is more than a little prejudicial.
I used to have respect for Brit Hume, but no longer. I do not object to his opinion, just the manner in which he promoted it.
I suppose it doesn't matter because I don't watch Fox News.

Why is it anyone's business which religion someone practices (or does not practice)? This seems very similar to worrying about what consenting adults do. Ridiculous.

atheism is the reason why the new house of rome collapses- the gift of christ is dead in america and soon global war begins- let the survivors figure it out

This would be disturbing, except for the fact that it was on Fox News. I don't think any rational / clear-minded people actually watch that rubbish. Anyone who is watching is part of the brainwashed right and already agrees with him. They are just pandering to the level of their audience.

Hume should be embarrassed

I can't belive people are defending these arrogant statements.
As a former Christians the more I hear this type of propaganda the more Christianity gets watered down... it's becoming nothing more than a political organization.

I hope your Christian beliefs ARE true because there is a hell waiting for you all.

Jim in Texas

For Mr. Hume I'd recommend that he read YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE BUDDHIST TO KNOW NOTHING, by Joan Konner. Hope it's not too deep for him.

Wow, is this where political correctness has taken us? If Hume would have gotten on the show and said ".. Tiger needs to come out and admit that he is gay and he will be ok." those of you slashing him for promoting his Christian belief would be ok with that, because it's cool in society to be gay. Until a comment came on this board denouncing that Chosen lifestyle, then Christians again would become the target. This country was founded on Christian beliefs and principles, not hindu, budhism, islam or anything else. Many have decided to attack Christians and Christianity because to be a Christian there are curtain things ways that you are expected to live, doesn't make anyone more holy, well, yes I guess it does. If you don't like it, don't become a Christian, if you had a bad experience with someone who is or claimed to be a Christian, which we all have had, get a second opinion. Try NOT flying off the handle and assuming that someone can't speak their mind just because they believe in Jesus Christ and not a stick of wood.

What a ma-roon.

I have nothing but compassion for Mr. Woods, and for Mr. Hume. We all make mistakes, let's keep that in mind and move on with our lives.

HATS OFF TO BRIT HUME! WE HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED BRIT'S STRAIGHFORWARD TRUTH, HIS HONESTY, HIS STRENGTH AND VALUES. NOW EVEN MORE.
ITS TIME FOR GENUINE REPORTING; ITS TIME TO SET ASIDE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS JIBBERISH. STAND TALL, BRIT, AND DON'T LET THE CONFUSED CULTURE WORRY YOU. WE ARE TIRED OF FICTION. WE NEED TRUTH.

Christianity is a joke and it's only for those with weak and inferior minds. If one has even half a brain, they wouldn't believe in such nonsense. Tiger Woods is just like all those Christians (including Hume himself) who have allowed themselves to stray from committed relationships.

We can list 100 famous Christians who have cheated on their wives/girlfriends, and 100 more famous non-Christians who have remained faithful.

Maybe being the world's greatest golfer, surrounded by groupies, money and parties is enough temptation for anyone to stray.

I wish people would stop with the "everyone thinks it's ok to bash Christians" sob story. That got old a long time ago. The bottom line here is that Hume does not have the right to tell another person that they need to switch religions. End of story. It is pompous, arrogant, and beyond ridiculous to think it's ok to do so. If being Christian works for him, that's great and I don't care if he talks all day long about how it is the right choice for HIM. But don't presume that Christianity is the right choice for everyone. And that applies to ALL religions, not just Christianity. I don't see how a journalist getting on the air and announcing that someone needs to convert to a different religion can be seen as anything other than an extreme act of hubris, no matter what your personal beliefs may be.

Truly remarkable that Brit had the courage to say something like this on the Jew-controlled media!

Whether you have faith or belief in a higher power doesn't negate the neccessity to remain faithful to your spouse while married to them. Tiger Woods was wrong for treating his wife that way, and if she inflicted any facial wounds he was lucky to get away with just that. Any woman in her right mind would have acted like Elin.
Now, Brett Humes having an opinion is no different than any other newscasters that share their belief system on air. Take Oprah, she uses her show as her platform for her beliefs. That is the First Ammendment in action!

I'm impressed that Brit has the courage to tell it like it is! I have no doubt that he will be attacked for his comments & faith.

Thanks Brit. Redemption is a free gift for the taking, all other faiths require achieving something, working for forgiveness, as though a good act cancels a bad. This leaves one trying to earn something he can never quite afford, just out of grasp. Brit was making a brave and sincere point. A broken man needs undeserved forgiveness. This changed my life, and can change his. The truth will set you free.

"This country was founded on Christian beliefs and principles..."

No, it was not.

The Treaty of Tripoli (1796):

"Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."

PRAISE GOD FOR BRIT HUME AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM! The fallen world we live in needs to hear the gospel; and Brit Hume is exactly the kind of person who can get God's Word heard! People will fail; religion will fail; churches will fail; but GOD never fails! Don't point at so-and-so and tell me his/her faults; look to God and keep your eyes on Him - He is all that matters!

For it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." (Romans 14:11)

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Hume sounded just like your average fanatic Islamic terrorist!

Regardless of what Tiger does, Elin should dump Tiger, and let him join Amway, along with his "girlfriends", as Amway also screws anything that moves. Amway is a scam, and here's why: Amway pays out as little money as they can get away with, so they support the higher level IBOs ripping off their downline via the tool scam. As a result, about 99% of IBOs operate at a net loss, while the top 1% make several TIMES more from their Amway tool scam than from the Amway products. Read about it on my blog, I suggest you start here: http://tiny.cc/D5oJh and forward the information to everyone you know, so they don't get scammed.

God bless you Brit for speaking out and letting the public know that Jesus is the way because we cannot keep ourselves we are kept only by the power of God through Jesus Christ, because Jesus is our example.

this a@@hole think his religion is better then other by slamming on budhism hey fked face christianity is more of a sinner then any other religion just because you go to confession every week dont make you any better then every one and asshole a sin is a sin it doesnt matter what religion u believe in and just because all u other fk face out there are christianty doesnt make u any better of a person then the next person someone on fox need to fired this asshole

So, the 1st amendment does not include personal opinion? You who are offended, how often do you offend with your opinions? The new paradigm is to attack and destroy those who disagree. What happened to civil discourse? Without dissent and discussion, our country will quickly (is quickly) regress into 2d century Rome.
Those of you who do not believe in a moral standard, do you not find a desire for justice within your own heart? Where does that come from? Britt Hume spoke from a place of sincerity and personal experience. Whether I accept his words or not, I respect his courage to expose his personal beliefs in front of the entire world.

Rave on, Britt

Britt spoke from a sincere heart of what he know from the word of God (The Holy Bible). Salvation changes a person from the inside out. Britt knows that God loves you, Tiger, and me so much (in spite of our hatred toward His son Jesus Christ) that He sent His only Son to die a horrific death on a cross for our sins so that we could have a relationship with God the Father.
Britt offered or suggested sincere help for Tiger as so many other people have, only the help he offered is eternal from God.
If you think Britt is arrogant for saying that he don't think that Buddhism can help Tiger, then you have to think Jesus Christ, the son of God is arrogant also, because Jesus said "I am the Way and the Truth, and the Life, and NO ONE can come to the Father except by me" This is the basis for his comment.
I will admit, there are many religions and there are sinning Christians. None of which change the word of God. Jesus said it's one way and that's through Him.
Proverbs 16:25 (NASB)
There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.(eternal condemnation)
I think his comments was sincere as any concerned persons would be and wasn't as disrespectful to other religions as the comments toward Christianity are.

You gotta love Fox News. It's the only network you can watch and get the truth.

For Brit Hume to chant:
Repentance Prayer (懺悔偈)

The evil karmas I have done with my body, voice, and mind are caused by greed, anger, and delusion, which are without a beginning in time. Before Buddhas I now supplicate for my repentance.
往昔所造諸惡業 皆由無始貪瞋癡 從身語意之所生 今對佛前求懺悔
The evil karmas I have done with my body, voice, and mind are caused by greed, anger, and delusion, which are without a beginning in time. I repent of all sins, the cause of hindrances.
往昔所造諸惡業 皆由無始貪瞋癡 從身語意之所生 一切罪障皆懺悔
The evil karmas I have done with my body, voice, and mind are caused by greed, anger, and delusion, which are without a beginning in time. I repent of all the roots of sin.
往昔所造諸惡業 皆由無始貪瞋癡 從身語意之所生 一切罪根皆懺悔

Brit responded honestly. Good for him. Since when must Christian hide their faith in America. Bravo Brit!

Finally...someone with the guts to speak some kind words regarding a sad situation. Those of you offended by his remarks should look past the "Christian" context of his remarks and really listen to what Brit said. Yes, we will NEVER agree on faith issues, but you're not paying attention to what Brit said. In a nutshell....."We've all sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

GO BRIT!

Finally, someone not afraid to tell the truth on American Television! He never bashed any religion (as so many claim) ..

People get so upset at the name of Jesus or mention of being Christian, because being a Christian means you are upheld to a standard .. And people, especially in America anymore, don't want to be held to any standard. Politically correctness has warped your silly brains and you don't even know what respect is most of the time. I am sure the founding fathers of the USA roll over in their grave to see what a mockery politics has made of freedom.

GOD was the foundation of the USA. For anyone that wants to come enjoy our freedoms, do so but know that GOD is here and will forever be. You can join us, but not change our very soul. Jesus is the beating heart of that soul, like it or not.

I hope the media one day breeds MORE like Brit Hume that speak out .. All you need is Jesus in your life to be truly FREE! +++

Ever Wonder if the most mystical religion is Christianity?
Have you ever thought about the reason why people hate it so much?
I think Brit Hume offered truth to Tiger, and kindness...
Redemption by the power of the cross of Christ, one sacrifice for so many offences.

Brit Hume sacrificed his political correctness, for good counsel...
Good job,
Rachel

Here's how it works. The media has been driven to more realism and less objectivity in the news (and in general). The media works for money. More people watch, commercials sell for more money. If you don't like it, stop crying and change the channel. If a lot of people do that, the program structure will change to best suck your dollars out of you. The whining here because someone expressed their opinion (is this a Republic?) is kind of nauseating. Find better use for your time.

Brit has spoken true words, though elusive to many. Bill Clinton couldn't find it, nor a host of other "Christian" celebrities. It takes an unusual level of humility, like that of a little child. I hope Tiger can find it.

Since when has a recognized journalist, on a so-called news network, found it appropriate to criticize someone else's religious beliefs, and then proceed to proselytize on behalf of his own religion? This is unheard of, full of hubris, and should be condemned by the Fox network. It's not an issue of free speech at all. It's an issue of rudeness comparable to something coming out of Iran, extolling the virtues of Islam, and slamming Christianity. As usual, the hypocritical theocrats post how proud they are of Hume. Perhaps they are just jealous of the free reign of the Ayatollahs.

Wow! Every idea under the sun can gain a public hearing ... except the possibility of a redeemed life through faith in Jesus Christ. Are we as objective and "open-minded" as we think we are? Why does the notion of faith in Christ for a restored life get people so uneasy! Chill out people and let Brit Hume speak his piece -- even if you don't like it. Who would have thought a man born in a manger, over 2000 years ago, who only did good, could be such a threat to modern thought! Are we afraid that their could actually be a right way and a final accounting of our lives to Christ? Hum....

Dennis Manuel said, "And religion has no place in the newsroom, unless it's part of the story, or in Congress."

Says who? As far as I know we still have the right to free speech in America, given by our constitution. Everyone else has a right to expressing their opinions except those who would express Christian views. It looks like there are some who would take away Brit Hume's or anyone's right to free speech. Sounds like oppressive tyranny to me. If you don't like someone's views then you don't have to listen. No where in the U.S. Constitution does it say that "Thou shall not offend others with your beliefs."

I don't know anything about Buddhism. I do know that if Buddhism is your faith you can not simply drop it and take up another faith because it offers you something you like better. They don't call it "faith" for nothing.

What Tiger needs to understand is that his first mistake was getting married when he was clearly unready. Cheating on his wife was only the aftermath. A little like a drunk driver in an auto accident... the REAL mistake was driving drunk. The car accident is the result.

If I'm advising Tiger, I tell him to get a divorce, go back to playing golf, and chase women if he so desires. But with the stipulation that he tells these women that his actions should not be taken as a sign of affection or commitment. Then at some future point if he is ready for a real commitment, he can enter into one.

As for Tiger's wife and kids, well, he can visit the kids regularly and neither they or his former wife will long for nothing, either financially or emotionally.

...So much for the Fox's alleged mantra of "We report. You decide."

Brit, keep your opninions about what religious beliefs offer more goodies to yourself and stick to your usual, "balanced" reporting. Tiger is far smarter and more talented than you are, whatever travails his personal life contains, so you can just report news, and let him decide personal matters like religious beliefs.

My issue is not that he's a proud Christian and says so. My issue is that nobody has the right to bash anyone else's beliefs. Believe what you believe but the truth is NOBODY KNOWS! Please stop pretending as if Christianity is the end all be all. If it works for you, great. But its the superior attitude that most Christians tend to have. I mean, is that really Christian like?

Good for Brit. BTW, he's right!

Christians ask forgiveness for their sins thru the Holy Spirit. Christians realize and benefit from this power of forgiveness. Yes, Christians continue to sin but they constantly seek spritual improvement and hence try to do better externally. No need to label them hypocrites when they reach out to help others! Now you may have another trying to be better as well.

Yes, I know that Hume has a legal right guaranteed by the constitution to say what ever he wants. Everyone else has a right to respond to what he said, and that includes the right to criticise his remarks. And all you people who are praising him to high heaven for offering his unasked for spiritual advice, well if someone went on TV and told a Christian adulterer or pedophile, that they need to DROP their Christian faith, and adopt another, you wouldn't be praising them or defending THEIR constitutional rights, you would be demanding that journalist be fired. You would also use the occasion to talk about how persecuted Christians are in the US.

This show how ignorant the typical Fundamentalist Evangelist Americans are about other faiths.

Brit Hume should read Buddhism 101 and particularly Angulimala (Rosary of thump nails) the serial killer. Buddha forgave Angulimala after after a severe penance and repentance.

In today's time Dalai Lama has forgiven Chinese for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Tibetans and stealing their land.

I hope Mr Brit Hume is aware of that and in fact is not hand in glove with Chinese occupation of Tibet.

George Bush has sent his 160,000 Army in Iraq to avenge 9/11 attack and another 40,000 in Afghanistan and even Obama promised to sent additional 30,000 to Afghanisthan.

Is this the kind of redemption and forgiveness Mr Hume is talking about.

if i were Tiger Woods i would be very appreciative to Brit hume for being concerned about my soul.Personally, i hope BRIT will say a few prayers for me as i expect our LORD and SAVIOUR to come back soon. Its good to hear a man tell the truth and not say what the liberals want to hear. GOD BLESS YOU BRIT AND GOOD LUCK. GOD BLESS YOU

The preaching of the cross (redemption & forgiveness) is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God! 1 Corinthians 1:18

Jesus said Whosoever shall confess me before men, him I will confess also before my Father which is in heaven. Way to go Brett, Jesus is confessing your name to the Father!

In this world Jesus said we would have tribulations, but be of good cheer Brett, Jesus has overcome the world! Keep standing. The power of the Truth spoken is evident in the opposition seen in these comments. Life changing power!
