nicole-bobek.jpgFigure skater Nicole Bobek, who won the 1995 U.S. figure skating title while under a two-year probation for a felony charge, was arraigned Monday in a New Jersey court for allegedly playing a vital part in a drug ring that distributed methamphetamine. She faces up to 10 years if convicted.

Bobek finished 17th at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano.

The Los Angeles Times has a rundown of Bobek's run-ins with the law and her ex-coaches, painting a sad portrait of one of the most talented skaters in the sport during the last 20 years.

She is currently being held on $200,000 bond.

I AM SHOCKED BECAUSE THERE IS NO REASON FOR HER TO BE INVOLVED IN DRUGS BUT I BELIEVE SHE MUST HAVE BEEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE. I REMEMBER THAT OKSANA BAIUL HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND SHE GOT HELP, SO I HOPE THAT NICOLE HAS SOMEONE THERE TO SUPPORT HER IF SHE HAS A REAL DRUG PROBLEM. THIS IS JUST SO SAD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY BUT I HOPE SHE GETS THE HELP SHE NEEDS.

I remember when I first started watching figure skating in 1994 when I was 13. Nicole had become my favorite figure skating for a while even above Michelle Kwan. I was a definite fan and even sent off for an autograph of which she included a personal note along with the photograph. I must say arriving at work today to discover this news really really saddens me. Nicole has a talent in figure skating that many could only wish they had. She was one of the few that did not require many jumps nor spins to create a program you could walk away and remember. I just don't know what to say . . . . this one hurts.

I don't get why these popular people get involved into this troubled situation. Their lives are already great and they wanted to make it worse. A drug is really something we should be very careful of.

She'll skate on these charges.
