missy-giove.jpgMelissa "Missy" Giove, a former downhill bike racing champion, was busted by the DEA for possession of 384 pounds of marijuana, according to the Saratoga Springs Saratogian.

From the Associated Press:

"The 37-year-old Virginia resident was arrested earlier this week along with a 30-year-old man whose home was allegedly stashed with hundreds of pounds of marijuana and more than $1 million in cash. Giove was one of downhill mountain biking's first female superstars, winning world and national titles before retiring six years ago."

Nicknamed "The Missile," Giove and her cohort, Eric Canori, face a maximum of 40 years in prison and a fine of $2 million if convicted.

There's apparently a local angle to this as well, as a traffic stop here in Illinois led to their eventual arrest.

According to the Saratogian:

"DEA spokesperson Erin Mulvey said the DEA learned of Giove and Canori's plans when Illinois State Police notified them about a suspicious traffic stop on June 13. DEA officials put their vehicle under surveillance until it arrived in Wilton. Mulvey said the drugs' final destination is 'still under investigation.'"

Giove holds the record for NORBA downhill wins with 14.

I wonder if she has addiction issues or if she was just doing it for the money - can read more here: http://www.alternativehealthjournal.com/article/melisa_missy_giove_arrested/3597

So, what's the tax on 200 lbs of cannabis? None, huh? What a waste! Legalize, Regulate, and Tax.

I agree... what a waste... people don't get busted for having a van full of beer... they shouldn't spend forty years in jail for driving one full of cannabis...

It's not about the commodity, it's about the fact that you make millions selling something that's illegal.
Not fair when others have to work hard to make a living.

Jeb, there are no addition issues with regard to cannabis and involvement with this is obviously related to
potential monetary gain. WHICH SHOULD BE FINE, this is America. Billions are made by drug corporations
selling opiatebased pain meds to America that actually ARE addictive, I fail to see the meaningful distinction which says they are good and she is bad.

Everyone assumes she is guilty. She hasn't gone to trail and we don't know the details or Giove's story yet. We should wait and see what happens.

Andy.
Fair has got nothing to do with anything.

"America ain't fair, that's why we're here!"

decriminalize!

I'm happy to see the open-minded attitudes on this page, a few years ago Missy would have been fully vilified. I've been working in marijuana law reform for 17 years, and we've seen a sea change in this issue since Michael Phelps admitted to smoking earlier this year and Arnold Schwarzenegger called for a debate on legalization. It's time to say enough!

They do not deserve to go to jail for 40 years or 40 days. Everyone and their brother smokes pot or at least has tried it including our current president and the last two before him. Its total nonsense. Three non violent young white people making alot of money while performing a service that many want, sounds like capitalism to me. Who says what they did wasnt hard work, it just happeneds to be illigal.

Now with the economy the way it is we dont need more money wasted on inprisoning non-violent non-threatning people, guilty of victimless crimes. How about legilize and tax it. Noone is cutting down on their grass these days, it could help us all out of the recession, even you lame asses who think its wrong!

My advice for Missy Giove is plead not guilty and read Hank Rearden’s speech to the court from Atlas Shrugged in your defense. The day has passed when twelve of your peers could be found who would be willing to lock you in a cage for decades because you had the courage to grow, trade, or consume the most useful plant on earth. Hand out Fully Informed Jury Association leaflets at the courthouse on the day of jury selection. Jury nullification is bound to play a central role in ending cannabis prohibition!

Sounds to me like she should go to jail for being a moron. I actually agree that it should be legalized. But, it ISN'T. She's an idiot.

i thought her court date was yesterday, what was her sentencing, does anyone know?
