Time to grow out those hockey playoff beards; It's going to be a long couple months for us

playoff-beard.jpgThe beginning of the NHL playoffs today in Chicago marks the renewal of one of sports' grizzliest traditions: playoff beards.

Started by the Islanders in the early '80s, the beards are a very tangible reminder of just how successful -- and long -- a team's playoff run has been. For players, each surviving whisker is a reminder of just how close to hoisting the Stanley Cup they are.

And just like the games themselves, beards separate the men from the boys.

With that in mind, we are joining in on the fun. We're shunning razors until our preferred teams bow out of the postseason -- or win it all.

Kevin's face-fate is tied to the success of the Blackhawks, who are making their first playoff appearance in seven years, while mine is tied to the Detroit Red Wings -- a team with a penchant for long spring runs. (After all, I'm a recovering Michigan native.)

We're encouraging you to put down the razor, too. Show your support for the Hawks by growing your own playoff beard. Show us your progress in pictures by submitting them at suntimes .com/community, starting with a Day One photo.
