Terrell Owens cut by Dallas; Should the Bears bring him to town?

terrell_owens.jpgWell, it looks like the Terrell Owens era is over in Dallas.

The wildly talented and always controversial wide receiver was released by the Cowboys, according to several media outlets.

Owens' long history of drama obviously has a lot to do with the move -- one that leaves the 35-year-old pass catcher searching for a new team.
In January, my colleague Kevin expressed his desire for Owens to don a Bears jersey, saying that this city needs more larger-than-life figures.

"There is nothing more yawn-inducing than following a team that goes 9-7 and misses the playoffs (as both the Bears and Cowboys did). Yet, which team was more fascinating? Which team captured more intriguing headlines? Which team's demise was more fun to watch? If you say the Bears, then you're a completely biased fan, and should be excluded from any logic-based sports discussion.

Clearly it was the Cowboys, whose trio of headline grabbers -- Tony Romo, Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones -- kept us entertained and made us forget (or not even care) that they missed the playoffs.
Surely the Owens-to-the-Bears banter is going to pop up on your sports talk shows tomorrow, but I wonder what percentage of people will side with Kevin and what percentage would prefer Owens keep his drama and undeniably awesome touchdown celebrations away from Soldier Field.

Owens caught 4.3 passes per game last season, the lowest total of his career. And there's no getting around the distractions he'll inevitably bring to the table.

So, is he worth the risk? Do you want to see T.O. in a Bears uniform?

You don't want T.O., the Bears are going to be cruising and they don't need the antics and immature behavior of T.O.. He destroys teams and their fans.

Yes!!! Look at the stats - over 1000 yards in 08. In fact he has over 1000 yards for the last 4 seasons. Only 3 others in that league in the whole NFL. We all complain about Kyle - well he has no one to throw to. T-O would be a big target. OK so he's filled with drama - the Bears have the answers. First - we Lovie it to death. If that doesn't work - Urlacher it get in his face. Last resort - the relentless Chicago Media. The Bears need excitement and they need to score. Is there anyone else on the market that delivers like T O?

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks... We'll take Marvin Harrison please!

t.o. is a cancer for any team he is on. i just hope the bucks or colts dont pick him up.

Please take T.O. Now that Barack is gone Chicago needs another high profile person in the news every day.

I would love to see TO, or anyone else in the league play WR for the Bears. Now I know we have our number 1 Hester... and Number 2 Davis... But I think that TO would make a great number 3 guy!

The Bears know more then everyone else and I hope that they know something that we dont because Im not too happy about the way this offseason is going so far with as many holes we have open.

What are you NUT'S

Hire him to sell cotton candy in the upper deck.

Personally, I have never been a fan of T.O. He has always been locker room poison and his antics have always irked me. That being said, I would love to bring T.O. to Chicago for a 2 year contract. I think we need a super-star WR and I think the Bears and the Lovie karma might actually help T.O. The Bears are a much different team than he has been part of in the past. Orton would have an undeniably No. 1 receiver and our offense would finally become something more than a bad joke. Plus, we could use our first round draft pick on some more OL help and pick up another WR in a later round to develop to be a no 1 (maybe move up in the 2nd to try and get Hicks?). P

i think the bears could use a good receiver, and terrell owens is that person. sign him to a one year contract and go from there

NO NO NO.... He is a major CANCER and will set this franchise back even further!!!!!!

Good God, y'all! A man of his statue? Undeployed?

T.O. could not hurt the horrible joke called an offense, what have we been ranked in AVG the last 5 yrs? "Yeah wright" we don't need him not with all the talent we have at wide out. But don't worry Bears Fans you keep supporting the team - sale out every game year why this organization puts out a horrible product with a bad front office.
Jerry wont pull the trigger because MCCaskey won't let him!
I have been a fan for years myself but we are a small market team I.E. Jacksonville, Buffalo, or Cleveland. Jerry said address the QB situation but with no one to throw to - why would you -oh yes we have
Hester as a number one. You need some one like TO to rattle the cages of a dormant Angelo, Phillips, Turner, and Yes Mike M. But again that's only wish full thinking Remember the CHICAGO BEARS ARE SMALL TIME AND THE FANS ARE TREATED AS SUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why bother entertaining the thought...we all know the Bears will not sign anyone this off season that will bring some excitement to the team. The Bears will be a mediocre team until there is a change in ownership. And the Super Bowl appearence that they somehow managed to trip into...won't be happening again anytime soon.

Send him down south to Houston. We might even build him his own locker room!!!

BRING HIM IN FOR A YEAR! SEE WHAT HE DOES...WHY NOT. BEARS HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

Are you kidding me! The bears would be crazy to bring this cancer into their locker! He is an aging mental patient that cries whenever he can. When I say mental patient(when is the last time you took a bottle of pills) he is mid 30s and he believes things like Tony and Witten are making plays behind his back, yells at coaches and team mates and believes he should get the ball all the time. "Dormant players....." The issue the bears have is QB. It has been their issue for some time. Bringing in a "big target" is B.S. Bring T.O. in and your bringing in a big problem that will only hurt the Bears. T.O. is a joke and has been for years. I'm glad he was blind sided. HIT HIM AGAIN IKE AND THIS TIME PUT SOME STANK ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Bringing in T.O. for a 1 or 2 year contract would be a great move. Since the Bears are notoriously awful at developing players to their fullest potential maybe Devin Hester and our other receivers could learn how to better play the position. Go Bears!!

Bring him in, Hester as the number one? ARE YOU KIDDING? He just became a reciever a year ago. T.O. is a huge distraction, but the bears have no recievers, They need someone with some skill.Give him a one year contract, what do we have to loose?

If you think Orton struggled after a little ankle injury, just wait till T.O. gets in his head with all of the me,me,me stuff. PASS!!!!!!

We have on paper, the WORST receiving core in the league.

I would take him in a heartbeat....

BEARS

The Bears have been dormant in the off season. Why not take a flier of TO? Lovie SMith can tame this guy. The talent he would bring to this team would be amazing. Not to mention eliminating 8 guys in the box which in turn opens up the running game for Forte.Look at Moss in NE,he came to a franchise where they wouldnt put up with his antics. I think the Bears can do the same to TO!! This is a move that can make a difference between no playoffs or playoffs!! Sign this guy the talent can not be overlooked and make the Bears fans happy!!!

the bears need a good quaterback.
even if you bring T.O. in our garbage qb wont be able to keep up with him.

Here are the pros: 1. He would be a GREAT target for K.O. and easily the #1 2. I enjoy the celebrations at times... Cons: 1. He complained when he has had McNabb, Romo, Garcia and Young throwing to him. Imagine when he has Orton. 2. There is NOBODY with the bears that will keep him in line. Lovie is a push over and whoever said Urlacher would straighten him out, should be slapped, he doesn't keep his own D in line and its not his job to anyways. T.O. defied Parcels, Lovie hasn't so much as raised his voice in three years, T.O. would walk all over him. 3. He won't sign a short term contract, he's getting older and he's too egotistical. Bottom line is there are just too many negatives to sign him. Plus Angelo isn't gonna fork over the money for a headache free agent, he doesn't sign high profile guys as is.

Is the Chicago media going to make up a story for every enticing free agent on the market? Seriously, bringing T.O. in? That is so ridiculous and the people who write this crap know it too. All of you that said T.O. is a disease to every team he is on couldn't be more right and obviously know a lot more about sports than the idiots that get paid to talk about it. And for those that think it's a good idea please become a fan of some other team cause you're just as dumb.

Are you kidding??? A 35 yr old receiver who main asset is acting like one. His best years are behind him. He has been around good quarterbacks every where he has been and has attempted to destroy each of them. How would it work out with Orten or God forbid Grossman? Lets just pass on this one. If the Bears need a receiver and the Bears indeed need one make a pitch for Boldin from Arizona.

Also lets determine if the quarterback issue is resolved. I think this position is still up in the air. Get Devin Hester back to being a threat on the kick off and punt return teams. A number one receiver he is not. Build something around Matt Forte and address the defense. Urlacher is not getting any younger or better. Mike Brown has his annual injury reunion tour and the secondary in general explodes during the season.

Da Bears have bigger issues at hand than T.O. Lets take a Time Out on this one.

YES!! Bring T-O to Chicago to be a QUARTERBACK!!! LOL!

At first I thought NO WAY, NOT THIS PIECE OF CANCER. But then - why not? Since the Bears castrated Hester by trying to make him into a WR we have absolutely zero threats on the field. At least OT is a real WR and will make defenses think. But only for one year.

When is the last time we've had a legitimate #1 Reciever? Sure, T.O. will bring antics and the "me, me, me" stuff, but he'll also bring something that we haven't seen since Willie Gault: PRODUCTION!

Anyone who thinks the Bears should sign T.O. even for one day is crazier than he is.

There's no way TO would be happy playing with Orton, who is a subpar QB. Look what he did to the last 3 QB's he's played with, who were decent QB's..That honeymoon wouldn't last no longet than pre-season. We should ask Barack what he would do being a Chi fan.

Let's put this in perspective-TO has 9 out of the last 11 seasons in which he's produced over 1000 yards and 9 TDs. In the Bears franchise history this has happened only 5 times. Yes that's right, since 1932 only 5 season of those totals or better. And the last time it happened was Dick Gordon in 1970. Enough said!!!

bear fan po what planet are you from? the chicago bears are without a doubt a major market team. the organization is ran like a five and dime store though. the chicago bears need T.O. more than he needs them. the dallas cowboys are a dysfunctional organization, with the wrong coach, and a owner who makes bad decisions. remember
jimmy johnson who won three super bowls and left, well what's happen
since? if the bears get T.O. they can concentrate on the offensive line which in turn will improve the running and passing game. T.O. still gets double coverage and devin hester would be a much better reciever. lets see kyle would be a better quarterback, the recievers
would be a better group, the offensive line would improve through the
draft and the free agent signing of the offensive lineman they signed, the bears would have two to three years to get another wideout. plus they could concentrate on safety if they don't sign darren shaper. the offense will score more points which will help the denfense be better too. gee, how many games have we lost that were close because we couldn't score more points over the last few years. don't get me wrong here, i don't like T.O. but all he wants to do is win, plus he scores touchdowns and puts up numbers. when's the last time the bears had a thousand yard reciever? of course the stone age.

I wouldn't want TO for free. The fact that he's going to "demand" at least $7 million a year, if not $10, is bad enough. He's a cancer to the team and no one, not even Ray Lewis, could keep him in line enough to be a team player. I don't want any part of TO, at any price, for any amount of time.

C'mon guys, I'll behave. Just give me a chance. I'm sure Lovie will have a calming effect on me.

KO to TO

Instant offense

What are you all nuts? Go get TO AND Marvin Harrison. The Bears need all the help at reciver they can get. WHile they are at it, maybe they should get a real starting QB too. Maybe he'd actually look like a starting QB with some real talent around him. Put Hester back on special teams and let him shine.

Thank God the Bear PR machine would NEVER EVER consider hiring that 2 year old child in a 35 year old body. What's really sickening is that moron, and his crafty agent Drew (The Theif) Rosenhaus have been able to sucker so many normally intelligent football people into believeing he's capable of being a teammate. After all, football is a TEAM sport. Maybe he should take up golf or bowling then he could kick and scream at himself. But wait, there's a sucker born every minute, and just as sure as the sun will rise tommorow, another coach & GM & owner will be suckered again by this pair!!! I'm just THRILLED that it won't be the Bears.

The Bears MUST absolutey consider bringing T.O. to the team!!! Have any ego ever gotten larger than life in the Bears locker room?? NO! You know why? OLIN KREUTZ! OLIN will brake your jaw if you try and get larger than life in that locker room, it just doesnt happen. Lovie is the father figure that T.O never had (which probably explains alot of his behavior) that will not raise his voice or challenge him, but use a more evasive psychological approach that wouldnt confront T.O. straightforward. The benefits of T.0. being on the field would lead to at least 12 touchdowns for Hester down the field playing the number 2 receiver. ROLL THE DICE JERRY THE SCARECROW we NEED T.O.!!!

No to T.O..

The Bears need to build a TEAM, not a collection of circus acts. Besides, we've seen that dog's tricks for a long time. In today's down-at-the-mouth climate we need entertainment (yes, that's what sports are) that uplifts and cheers us, not some strutting, in-your-face clown.

Sure TO has issues but he does, nonetheless, draw attention on the field where it counts most. Let him flap his gums all he wants as long as he draws defenders.

With TO on the field, pressure would be off Hester and maybe he'd actually turn out to be that "explosive threat" receiver we've been waiting for him to develop into. Keeping 8 out of the box would open up running lanes for Forte, not to mention more passing opportunities.

Hell, his antics might bring some crazy fun to a team that seems to be mired in mediocrity. With Orton coming back healthy, he'll need a good set of receivers to show what he's made of. Orton's numbers were greatly affected by receivers dropping the ball like they were homesick bricks. Give the guy some hands to work with, even if its a loud-mouthed, opinionated, self-absorbed superstar receiver.

he's a much needed talent in the chicago area... the cubs did it , the whitesox did it... now both of those teams are contenders. with a two or three years contract and i'll bet the QB thing here will be something of the past. P.S. we need Sharper as well.

Bring in TO. His best year in Dallas was his first, if i recall there was little drama because he and Dallas was focused on winning. The bears have to do something. There are still a few receivers out there (Galloway, Hillard)

Recipe to win.

1- Trade Hestor to Dallas for 1st round pick

2- Draft Harvin (play as third down back) and OT with 2 first round picks.

3- Pick up TO

4- Fill out other needs with other picks, DT, Guard, WR.

5- Pick up a workable OT via free agent

You now have manning and Harvin to return, a legit #1 WR, a great third down back, a O line that can play now and improve with time.

I think the Bears should get both T.O. and Vick ...

LOOK I KNOW THAT T.O HAS A BAD RAP... BUT LET'S BE HONEST HERE THE BEARS ARE IN NEED OF A PLAYMAKER.... A SERIOUS ONE AT THAT....IMAGINE THIS T.O ON ONE SIDE AND HESTER ON THE OTHER THE SPEED UPGRADE AT THE POSITION IS A STUPID UPSIDE.... PLUS THE BEARS ORGANIZATION AND PLAYERS HAVE A FAMILY ENVIORMENT AND CHICAGO A CITY WITH "BIG SHOULDERS" WILL WELCOME HIM IN TO GIVE A CHANCE AT A SUPERBOWL RUN....LOVIE CAN MAKE THIS GUY...I BELIEVE LOVIE CAN MAKE HIM UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A GOOD FIT A REASONABLE CHAMPIONSHIP RUN

SERIOUSLY - IF YOU JUST CANT STOP YOURSELVES and you are gonna consider this guy: ONE YEAR - That's it.

On the occasions when the Eagles kill me (like cutting B-Dawks) I always turn to the team of my childhood hero: Dick Butkis. I don't want the fans in Chicago to do this to themselves. Remember it's not just the Eages: Garcia took shots when T.O. played with the 9ers - I know he said that he deserved better than to play with those loosers and he was at the height of his career so some believed him. Like here in Philly and he gave the Eagles BirdFlu. Now the CowBoyz (of course I LOVED IT when he took them apart) but all of JJ's "I understand your ego" approach couldn't save them, either.

Until you live through it you CAN NOT BELIEVE what a cancer he is. The national headlines DON'T do this man justice, he is an EVERY-DAY-SELF-MADE-DISTRACTION and DESTRUCTION. He promises to shut-up & play but he doesn't & he wont - I think he can't. He's like a high-school girl with the gossip, whining and back-stabbing (It's OK PC folks - I get to say that because I'm a woman).

DON'T DO IT CHICAGO!!!!!!

YES YES YES finally someone that kids dream to be on there team come on bears sign to a 1 year deal just to see what happeens if good sign him again PLEASE SIGN HIM

TO or not...we need someone who can catch the long ball. i don't think i remember someone catching a pass that was in the air for over twenty yards the whole season.

The Bears don't need T.O. because it will hinder the improvement that they hope to get from their "proclaimed" starter in Kyle Orton. TO isn't a builder of quartebacks but rather he kills their psyche and makes it all about himself rather then the team. The Bears would be better off doing nothing then by bringing in a bum like Owens. While adding Owens might make the Bears a better team in the short term it will eventually kill them in the long term. Let the Lions go after him and he can kill Stafford's career before it even begins.

BRING BACK GROSSMAN!!! HE CAN DO IT!

Bears offense consistently ranks 30, 31, or 32nd in the NFL.

I don't really see the risk his drama would bring to the team.

On the contrary, i think signing TO would add life to a dull-offense, as well as stats, to an offense that has been asleep since Payton retired.

Add Pittsburgh to the list that wouldn't put up with all the antics. I really thought T.O. and Dallas were a perfect match.
