Coach K on Obama: He should focus on the economy

| 24 Comments | No TrackBacks
coach_k_obama.jpgPresident Barack Obama's bracket was front and center yesterday, as the basketball enthusiast made his selections during a segment for "SportsCenter." Obama picked the North Carolina Tar Heels to win it all, and issued a challenge to Roy Williams squad to not make him look bad again.

As you might expect, some intrepid journalist ran with this fun little piece and asked Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski what he thought of Obama saying their most bitter rival would take home the title.

Coach K echoed the sentiments of a lot of Joe Six-Packs out there, saying the president has bigger fish to fry.
""Somebody said that we're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils' first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.
At first glance, this quote really doesn't seem like a big deal to me. What was he expected to say? That it was great Obama picked North Carolina? That he hoped the First Fan won his bracket pool?

The people at the Drudge Report see this story a little different than I do, choosing to lead their site with it. The headline reads "DUKE COACH SLAM DUNKS OBAMA: FOCUS ON ECONOMY NOT NCAA PICKS."

What do you think? Is this even a criticism from Coach K or simply what he was expected to say? And how big of a story is this, really?

I think he was just bitter that they didnt get picked... If Obama had picked his team, it would have been a different story. Typical response i think

I think because B. Obama is black that people just assume he knows sports. He doesn't. He's a dorky politician.

Linda S.

Kyle responds: Who in their right mind equates sports knowledge with being a trait of a specific race?

Obama will do anything to get in front of a camera. It is an effort to do anything to portray Obama as an grand athlete to compensate for his bowling episode - which was a better performance than his ability to run the country.

Kyle responds: Who in their right mind equates sports knowledge with being a trait of a specific race?

Apparently the entire country for being interested in what the B. Obama's NCAA bracket says.

I don't recall anybody ever asking any of those old white Presidents what their bracket results were... and the last one, G. Bush, was actually associated with professional sport - as owner of the Texas Ranger.

Stop acting like you're Mr. politically correct, K. Koster. It's the way people think and ESPN filming B. Obama filling out his March Madness bracket is proof of this.

Linda S.

LINDA: It truly amazes me the ignorance of some people(you). How could you equate Obama filling out an NCAA bracket with his being African American??? Ill give you a number of reasons(other than being black) for Obama being asked to fill out the bracket and why people are interested: 1: He's relatively young and athletic. 2. He played basketball in college and even to this day, he has pick up games(youtube it). 3. He's a very friendly and down to earth guy. 4. He's likeable. 5. He's the President. I recall seeing George Bush throw out the opening pitch of Baseball games. Was he asked to do that because he's white? NO! Linda, get a life and while ur searching, see if u can find a brain. Also, a cloak to hide ur racist views becuase it's showing for all the world to see. By the way, im black. :-)

I never liked Duke Blue Devils and now this unnessary comment by Coach K makes me dislike them more. go tarheels!! I would say Coach K was upset President Obama did not pick his team to win it all. Therefore, he had to retaliate back by making the unneccessary comment. No matter what he says "our president is black" President Obama can pick whatever team he likes and Still run the country and help the economy improve. And if Coach K wants to help he should give up some of his salary for the economy to improve instead of making unnessary comments.

Kyle responds: I think you're missing the point. It's not as if Coach K conjured up this comment out of nowhere. He was responding to a question. My point is, if placed in that situation, is there any possible answer that he could give to satisfy everyone?

First I all, I believe all of you are being very immature! (I assume all of you are adults!)

To you Linda: apparently you don't keep up with Basketball or ESPN because as one of the other people mentioned he plays pick up games and loves the sport (specifically he played with the North Carolina Tarheels) So as far as being a "dorky politician" I disagree. Now as far as your comment on him "being black" that people assume he knows sports I understand what you meant. In no way did I feel you were being racist, you just need to educate youself a little better in the future.

To you Kareeim: First, before you throw around the race card so easily you should have looked at what she was saying from an adult point of view. She by no means was being "racist" she was stating what she understands basketball to be, a "black sport" While I disagree with her feelings, I understand why she or others might feel that way. If she doesn't watch a lot of basketball; which I believe to be the case, then one might assume that to be true based on a lot of our NBA super stars. But; has I told her, she might want to educate herself a little better in the future. Secondly, Pres. Obama being "down to earth" and a "likeable person" has nothing to do with why people are interested in his bracket. It's because he's the President!

To everyone else: As far as what this blog seems to really be about, I do disagree though with Coach K's response to Pres. Obama's bracket. By no means was he "not focusing" on the ecomnomy by taking what seemed like five mins. to give his input. I'm sure he never even left the White House! Ending my post, I just want to say GO TARHEELS!!! (yes, I am a huge Tarheel fan!)

Linda S. Excuse me but you must know nothing yourself...President Obama is an athlete as well not just a politian and please keep the racial comments to yourself they have no place here.

Linda, I do believe I was defending you. I regret that now! I gave no "racial comments"! I believe everyone else, specifically Kareeim, was calling YOU racist. I on the other hand was defending you. As far as you saying "he is an athlete as well as a politician" I agree. I do believe in your ealier comment you posted you stated and I quote, "I think because B. Obama is black that people just assume he knows sports. He doesn't. He's a dorky politician."

So therefore how can you say that "I know nothing" when clearly you are a very confused individual.

Big enough obviously that you managed to fill up about a 1/4 of a page with an article on it!

OBAMA HAS TO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS. SEEMS TO ME HE HAS NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAB THROW SUPERBOWL PARTIES, FLY TO CAMP DAVID (TWICE), GET ON TV, AND SHOW WHO HE THINK IS GOING TO WIN THE TOURNAMENT. MAYBE HE SHOULD START A WHO IS GOING TO GO BANKRUPT NEXT BRACKET. PICK HIS BRACKET AND THEN HE CAN THROW A PARTY. I AM A TRUE TARHEEL FAN AND PLAN ON THEM WINNING, BUT YOU CANNOT DOUBT COACH K'S ABILITY TO WIN. WE SHALL KEEP OUR EYES ON IT. OBAMA SHOULD KEEP FOCUSED ON THE CRIPPLED NATION THAT HE SHOULD BE TRYING TO HELP. I SAY COACH K SAID WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS THINKING. GO COACH K!

Is it just me, or did Coack K seem a little bitter about Obama's picks.....it takes roughly 10 mins to fill out a bracket.

I have a question, are you (Eric Collins) saying that just because he is president he should should not take maybe and hour a day or so to maintain his sanity, I mean for God's sake, they man's hair is going Grey from dealing with the country's problems.

All I'm saying is a man's got to have some stress relief, and this one beats Clinton's(Monica).

I'm really tired of this focus on the economy jargon created by this 24hr news cycle. I can assure he, if anyone is paying attention, its probably him. Seriously, he does plan to get re-elected.

Y'all are just a bunch of haters!

Its interesting how everyone seems to think Obama is not working as hard as he can to fix the economy. The man should not have to work every second of every single day. How long could that sportscenter bit have taken to shoot? 30 mins? He didnt even have to leave the whitehouse. He probably showed up, smiled for the camera and went back to work. He could have done it on his lunch break for god sakes.

We all work hard and we all find time to fill out brackets and enjoy the tournament. I have no doubt that our president does the same.

coach k. is an ass. it was totally disrespectful for him to chastise the president in that way. he could be bitter and upset about his bracket picks, but he hit below the belt. the so-called coach lacks class.

GO UNC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

U have been a UNC fan for over 50 years. I have heard comments by rival coaches before on the pick matters. I have heard coach K comment many times before.
The comment K made about "Obama Focusing on the economy."
I think he is right. Pres Obama is trying everything he can to take the public mind off his failure to management government matters.
Basketball picks, The Tonight Show, and Rush what ever his name is.
I wish Hee Haw were still on, I think Pres. Obama would look cool in bibed overalls and a straw hat.

One thing I left out of my prior comment.
I feel Roy Williams or Mike K. would be stronger leaders than Obama. They have both proven they can hanle pressure, and that they can assemble a team of winners.
So far Mr. Obama can't even control Nancy Polosi (sp) and she's only the head cheerleader.
To date Mr. O has only assembled a team of weeners.

Mike further stated " I love the guy and think he is doing a great job" the right wing media chose to leave that final piece out. I saw the interview on ESPN and that was a substantial omission. It's refreshing to have a Pres. who is like us and likes March Madness. People should ease up on watching Fox news, that, Rush and Sean cause brain damage.. By the way I am a white guy who is an ex paratrooper and dont care for draft dodgers who act like war is some kind of video game. Are you listening W, Newt and Dick? marty

I agree with those of you who can't understand why everyone is so upset about Pres. Obama feeling out a NCAA bracket. I think we can all assume that the prior Presidents did it as well, just not on national television. No, I am not necessarily an Obama fan but lets be realistic here people! He's allowed to have a life and take what seemed like a 5-10 segament on ESPN to give his opinion.

I believe the politicians who aren't in a hurry to give federal aide or seemingly any other solution to those businesses and individuals suffering economic hardship should be the ones creating the "WHO IS GOING TO GO BANKRUPT NEXT BRACKET".

As for Coach K and his reply, I believe that if he wasn't bitter about the President's picks but still wanted to show some rivalry he would have responded with something along the lines of "well he's free to make those choices, but we're going to prove him wrong."

The coach was asked a question and he answered it, the only way he could without offending the POTUS or showing lack of support for his team. I'm sure if he and P.O. understands neither man meant to insult the other-it's all part of the game.

oh my lordd...

i completely agree with eric collins 1st off. nice way to state that... and to James Bly.. barack hasn't been president long enough that this could effect his grey hair or stress levels because he hasn't done anything of importance yet.every effing president plans to get reelected.. just hopefully obama doesn't.. THIS IS A CRITICAL TIME IN THE UNITED STATES for those who pay attention.. and really. Obama should be paying closer attention to where the trillions of taxpayers dollars are going. for example, aig bonuses... Obama has not done anything in the past few months as president that can be said about him being a good president. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't it under him that he planned on having a 1000 page $800 billion stimulus plan, which he gave congress days to look over then vote.. why not put more time and effort into it and make it good than waste time and money...

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH COACH K AND HOPE HE BEATS UNC INTO THE GROUND.

I'm a big Duke fan and I think it's cool that our President is into March Madness like the rest of us. President Obama is smart enough to multi task. With Lawson back, why wouldn't the guy who turned the state of North Carolina from red to blue go with UNC. Coach K's response was exactly right. He couldn't very well agree with the President, and he had to find a way to express his support for his own team. Lighten up, people. It's just college hoops. The sun will still come up tomorrow if Oklahoma State upsets Pitt.

This is typical Coach K... Can the man GET some class? If Obama would have picked Duke to win K would totally support everything he does but, since Obama went with reality Little K is having a b**** fest. Can he just face the they aren’t the team they used to be… “Hey K, you’re never going to beat Dean Smith’s record so just RETIRE already”… When Duke loss to Clemson, K couldn’t even admit the defeat he just said “We only beat ourselves.” And the ONLY reason K thinks he can speak up is the fact that he got a little lucky and won the ACC. Even when FSU LUCKLY beat UNC Roy said “We didn’t play as hard as we should have to get the goal” CLASS.

I sure K will make up some lame excuse now that Tyler Hansbrough not only beat Redick’s scoring record but is about to demolish it!

Go with the team with the CLASS! GO HEELS!
