Backstreet Boys to sing national anthem before Game 1 of World Series

If I had to guess, the last time Nick Carter and the Backstreet Boys crossed my mind was 2003 when I spent spring break in Marathon, FL. Carter maintained a very nice residence just down the road from where we stayed.

I would have been fine if that was my last Backstreet Boys memory. But the powers that be have apparently granted the boy band the privilege of singing the national anthem before Game 1 of the World Series tomorrow night.

From the Heater:

"Move over, B.K. Jackson. The Backstreet Boys will sing the national anthem of game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night, according to team fan experience director Darcy Raymond. Throwing out the first pitch will be Pinellas County Commissioner Bob Stewart. Stewart was a St. Petersburg City Council member back on July 24, 1986, who voted with five others to build the stadium even when the area didn't have a team.
Nothing, and I mean nothing says October baseball like BSB.

UPDATE: I've heard from many people who took issue with the "artistic license" taken by the Backstreet Boys during tonight's rendition. Personally, I thought it was pretty good. Judge for yourselves:

For my money, Marvin Gaye's anthem before the 1983 NBA All-Star game is the gold standard.

I can't remember the last time I thought about watching baseball.... but you better believe I will be watching tomorrow night! YESSSSSS!!! Thanks Kyle!

Backstreet boys? What a waste!
David Cook should be there!!!!

Hey, I'm not sure I'm at all thrilled with the fact my wife and daughter now plan to watch at least the opening of the game because the Backstreet Boys are going to be on. I was hoping for a little estrogen free time.

Luckily I love baseball too, but I have been obsessed w/BSB since 1996 & couldn't be MORE THRILLED they are performing. They are a talanted group of guys (yes they DO write their own songs & each play at least one instrument!) Now as far as who wins the game - hopefully Tampa Bay just to piss off my ex-husband!

Way to go BSB Show everyone you have what it takes for a great performance. Love You all

I'm GLAD to know the Boys are singing for the opening game!
I haven't watched baseball, in, hm, EVER... but I'll be glued to the set for this! I'm a HUGE FAN and I'm glad some Nonfans will be exposed to their talent. The Boys have come a very long way since "Everybody" and are at the top of their game now, you can't deny after listening tomorrow, the Boys have talent. I'll bet anything their harmonies are flawlessly spot on!

-Got Backstreet?

That was probably the worst rendition of the star-spangled banner i have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!

Sing it the way it was written. Don't put your little boy band "artistic interpretation" into it!!!!

What a disgrace to the national anthem.

Love the "Everybody" video....seems familiar....does it have anything to do with the TV series "True Blood"?

Kyle responds: I think if I knew the answer to that I'd be laughed out of the sports department. Can anyone answer this?

Hands down the worst rendition of the Star Spangled Banner EVER. the Backstreet Boys should be ashamed of themselves for butchering our countries National Anthem. They have some nerve at using their "artistic" license to ruin our countries song. We all deserve a huge apology.

Omg. I just saw the backstreet boys singing the national anthem. And they did so awesome. Everybody does a little twist on the national anthem and it was great when they all did it. But since it was the backstreet boys no one liked it. Now that does not sound very patriotic to me now does it. ( and no it is not because I am a girl and I like the backstreet boys) Get over it, they did awsome and I would love to hear them do it again.

I am an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Rays. I live close to Tropicana Field and I've attended nearly 20 games this year including several playoff games. As I watched and listened to the Backstreet Boys perform their rendition of the national anthem, I was ashamed. It was horrible! Of all the performers in the world, I have no idea why the Rays organization decided to have the has-been, Backstreet Boys perform at the very, first ever World Series game played at Tropicana Field? In plain English, they stunk!!

The 2nd worst rendition of the National Anthem ever - behind Roseanne Barr. Next month I will have the "honor" of speaking at a Veterans Day celebration at a Veterans Home in Illinois. Can you imagine what those brave men and women would feel like if someone performed like that at "their" celebration? It's not artistic license - it's DISRESPECT.

that was just horrible... just sing the anthem the way it should be done... artistic licensing does not apply to this ever.

So sad that even Roseanne Barr's rendition was more appealing than the Backstreet Boys - MLB should put down rules - either sing it right or don't sing and MLB will announce the names of those who want to change it. Nothing wrong with that.

I thought they did a great job. It's not the first time that an artist has added his or her artistic expression to the national anthem. They all do it. Unfortunately BSB tends to attract negataive comments no matter how good they are because of the boy band label. Give credit where credit is due - they sang it live, the four part harmony was without flaw - they sounded terrific.

I'm in the military and defend our flag every day, that was the worst singing of the National Anthem I have ever heard it made my gut turn. They should have to apolgize. YOU JUST DONT MAKE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM ARTISTIC.It is Disgraceful they should be ashamed

In my opinion, I thought they did a fantastic job. I saw them last night and they sounded great live. Also, if you listened closely they harmonized it to the right tune. They sang right on pitch so I don’t know where all the negative comments are coming from. They did not change up any of the words. All they did was harmonize to the best of their ability and I doubt that they will disrespect their own country. So to say something like that is an insult to them. It took a lot of confidence to sing it live in front of millions of people. They know music and has been in the industry for a very long time. Also, they are a 4 part boy band. So they all had to share the tunes and the words equally between all of them. If one of them sang the song, what is the other three guys going to do, stand there? No. Finally, they did great and I am glad that the MLB organization allowed them to sing. Go Phillies!!!! 1-0

I think it sounded fantastic. I know it's tradition to sing the anthem with no bells and whistles, but sometimes that's just boring. I loved it!

THIS HAD TO BE THE WORST SINGING OF THE NATION ANTHEM SINCE ROSEANNE BARR'S VERSION BACK IN THE YEAR OF 1990 CAN ANY TELL ME WAY WE HAD TO GET THE BACK STREET BOYS SINCE NONE OF US HAS HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM IN OVER TEN YEARS HY I GOT A GREAT IDEA LET'S TRY A SOUND CHECK BEFORE ONE OF THESE HAS BEEN WASHED UP BANDS HAS BEEN WHAT EVER DECIDE TO STRANGLE ANOTHER CAT AND CALL IT SINGING THE NATION ANTHEM REMEMBER MICHEAL VICK WENT TO PRISON FOR SHOOTING DROWNING AND KILLING LASSIE BENJIE AND RIN TIN TIN I DID NOT EVEN LIKE THE BACK STREET BOYS WHEN THEY WERE FIRST AROUND LET'S REMIND THEM THEY HAD THERE FIFTEEN MINUTES OF FAME AND THEY NEED TO GO AWAY FOR GOOD

horrible ... absolutely horrible

the greatest boyband of all time appear on the world series that is epic the world series needs to apreciate that and be honored with such great icon's BSB rule's the hater's drule

dont be so ignorant people leave them alone they did a good job and better than all you guys could do they are the ones with all the fame and money so obvisouly they are doing something right

The Marvin Gaye Rendition is the best I have ever heard. And I am a 57 year old white guy, and a musician. Outstanding job, Marvin.

Thought the national anthem had been abused about as far as it could go. That was until game 4 of the World Series.

I think they sounded great! They didnt even change it that much. I think everyone that had complants didnt even bother listening to the song. They just saw who was singing it and decided that they were going to be stereotypical and hate it. I have heard some horrible renditions. This is NOT one of them. Great job bsb!
