You seem to like when I post photos of celebrities on the red carpet. To hell with shopping news! You want to see sparkles and shiny teeth!

This week celebrities came out for the film premieres of Francis Ford Coppola's new film "Tetro," the new comedy "The Hangover," which opens tomorrow, and the romantic comedy "The Proposal." Also, the new Showtime series "Nurse Jackie" had a nice little party in New York, complete with a hunky blond vampire on the red carpet. But I'll get to that in a minute.

Here's a quick sampling of red carpet looks, with a few after-party photos thrown in for good measure. As we saw on the red carpets at the Cannes Film Festival last month, black continues to be a favorite right now (six of the actress below wear the color nearly head to toe). As always, let me know what you think of the fashion -- who you like, and you don't!:

premieresofia.jpg
Sofia Coppola, here at her father's premiere of "Tetro" in L.A. Wednesday, is on my girl-crush list, mostly since I'm such a huge "Lost in Translation" fan. But I've wondered why Sofia is considered such a fashion diva. She always makes the best-dressed lists, yet she usually just wears all black. I'm not sure if I get it. Thoughts?

INC International Concept's Smocked Tie-Dyed Maxi Dress, $99, with shimmery metallic streaks, at Macy's.

Macy's is showing some hippie love with a Summer of Love shopping party at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Macy's, 111 N. State on the fourth floor.

Shop the store's retro looks for the summer, get an air-brushed, tie-dyed T-shirt, rock out to a DJ and snag some giveaways from Carlos Santana shoes.

In case you get the munchies, Rock-n-Roll Gourmet will be handing out their new all-natural baked snack Hippie Chips for you to taste.

Ukranian Village boutique Soko Fashion offers clothing that's both affordable and pretty darn cute. From left: Mystree Rag Doll Dress, $59.99; Tulle tank, $39.99; BB Dakota dress, $69.99.

Ever wish you could see a woman with curves -- or breasts -- model clothing on a runway?

Soko Fashion, 1925 W. Chicago, has tapped its own customers, of all shapes, sizes and heights, to model new clothing lines during Fashion Rocks, a live music fashion show this Sunday, May 31, at Darkroom, 2210 W. Chicago.

The free event will feature three local bands, including the Ragtones.

naeem.jpg

I won't be able to afford anything from Indian designer Naeem Khan. But boy do I wish I could. His new Fall collection features gorgeous dresses and "cocktail suits" (his signature look) in rich jewel tones, such as silver, black and red. He's also known for his intricate and ornate detailing. His dresses have been worn by Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria and Beyonce.

If you'd like to drool over dresses you most likely can't afford, head over to the Naeem Khan Fall Trunk Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 and Wednesday May 13 at Neiman Marcus, 727 N. Michigan at the Couture Salon, second floor. For more information, call (312) 642-5900, ext. 2050.

Above are three of my favorites (I'll take one of each, please!) from his Fall 2009 collection, though click here to pick YOUR favorites.

Another event at Neiman Marcus this week: Pamela Roland Fall Trunk Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 14 at the Couture Salon, second floor.

This one's a head-scratcher, since the store isn't actually open 'til midnight. But I'll go with it anyway.

Both City Soles/Niche locations are hosting their annual Midnight Madness sale today. Everything in the store is on sale, so expect to snag big discounts, as well as a few cocktails.

-- The location at 2001 W. North is open until 11 p.m. tonight (but if show up late and shop between 10 p.m. until closing, you'll snag even bigger discounts!).

-- The location at 3432 N. Southport is open until 9 p.m. tonight.

Erin will be on hand to talk about her collection. Just as the city event, feel free to bring gently-used bridesmaid or formal dresses for the Glass Slipper Project.

jasonloper.jpg
Jason Loper of handbag boutique Zola Jones Designs is calling all creative types.

For all of you lonely crafty folks in Chicago, Zola Jones owner and designer Jason Loper has created a new weekly event just for you. At Hump Day/Craft Night, a "BYOB community crafting" event, artists are encouraged to bring their knitting, jewelry supplies, paper crafts and other crafty projects for an evening of creative recessionary escapism.

"When customers see me sitting at the sewing machine handcrafting the Zola Jones line of bags," says Loper, "they're often very excited to tell me about their craft. [This event] will give everyone an opportunity to share that excitement with me and a store full of other creative people."

Refreshments will be offered at the weekly event, which will run from 5 to 8 p.m. beginning May 6 at Zola Jones Designs, 1944 W. Montrose, (773), 848-3257.
Regular hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

perry 2.jpg
Wanna rub elbows with Cubs catcher Geovany Soto? He'll be hanging out at Carson Pirie Scott, 3333 W. Touhy, at 6:30 p.m. April 16th, to chat with fans about his life on and off the field during an event sponsored by men's clothing designer Perry Ellis. Maybe if you ask Soto nicely he'll help you pick out a shirt.

Customers who purchase $50 or more of Perry Ellis merchandise will receive a baseball for Soto to sign and entry into the gift-with-purchase line. The first 50 customers who make it into that line will get a complimentary Perry Ellis gift bag.

A quick flip through the Perry Ellis Web site shows the designer added a few floral and paisley shirts to its inventory of all plaid and stripes. I'll be disappointed if Soto is not wearing this Uneven Paisley Print Shirt, $59.99 (at right). And what makes it uneven?

Points to any of you who can convince him to grab a beer after the event. Peanuts count as well.

Though our lovely city seems to be very anti-Spring right now, Macy's on State is the opposite. The store launched its 2009 Flower Show, Dream in Color, Saturday with a vibrant landscape of flowers, plant life, pink flamingos, flowering cherry trees and more. In addition to the floral displays, Macy's will be offering performances, plant seminars, shopping parties and chef demonstrations, from now until April 19.

Marc Anderson~Poorlittlerichgirls.com

A few of you loyal readers have asked about the Poorlittlerichgirls.com Battle of the Boutique event I helped judge last Thursday (along with Jes from "Rock of Love" and Ben from "Shear Genius"). I will be writing about my experience -- as well as asking readers to vote on which outfit is their favorite -- in this Thursday's Shopping with Jessica column. (That's me in the background on the left, pondering my decision. Or maybe I'm just wondering what's on my salad.)

Though this outfit shown above was not in the official competition, it was my favorite of the evening. The ensemble from le Dress, 1741 W. Division, was not only the most fashion-forward in the bunch, but the it was the best value for the prices. Tulle Lifesaver print dress (very Maggie Gyllenhaal from "Secretary") is a steal for $84, and the Tulle overcoat is $88.

Look for the coverage in Thursday's paper!

I'll be putting my Nina Garcia skills to the test tonight as I help judge the first-ever Battle of the Boutiques fashion show put on my Poorlittlerichgirls.com, a new Web site geared toward Chicago fashionistas who don't like to spend a lot of money! Five Chicago boutiques will compete at the event, each showcasing a low-cost look from their boutique. I'm slated to judge alongside Steven Rosengard from "Project Runway," Jes from "Rock of Love" and a few others.

While the fashion show is sold out, the event, at Chaise Lounge, 1840 W. North Ave. in Chicago, is open the public starting at 9:30 p.m. So swing by if you want to meet other poor little rich girls like you!

Owner Terry Ledford on the vintage 1960s chair shown above: "I had the chair reupholstered using new fabric I sourced. I will be doing this going forward -- finding vintage upholstered pieces, choosing new fabrics and having them reupholstered. I love taking older pieces and making them new!"

Ledford on the accessories below: "All of the items were also from the 1960s. We hand sanded each piece to remove the finish and then use a satin varnish on the casing and latex paint to paint out the fronts."

1. FRIDAY, NOV. 14: SENSUAL STEPS MIDNIGHT SALE
I've written about Sensual Steps, 4518 S. Cottage Grove, a few times in the last month. The politically active boutique has been throwing election day parties and dropping prices. But this event is definitely worth a mention. The boutique, which already offers affordable shoes, is marking down EVERYTHING in the store 50 percent off at their Midnight Madness Sale from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday. If you can't make it to the store, the discount is offered online as well. Now some of the boots, which are as low as $50 (before the 50 percent off), may not be real leather. But for those of us who can't afford the $200 boots at Nordstrom right now, this may be a good alternative. As long as you don't wear them every single day, fake leather boots can last a very long time! And these are pretty darn cute. Let me know what you bought!

2. FRIDAY, NOV. 14: WINE TASTING AT MACY'S
Get schooled on wines from Sonoma County (and taste plenty of them) at Macy's Wine Shop (lower level), from 6 to 7 p.m. for a measly $10. Reservations are required: (312) 781-3682.

The festival is also at the Nordstrom at Oakbrook Center, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Enjoy!

6. SATURDAY, NOV. 15: DR. SEUSS' MAYOR WHOVILLE BOOK READING
Join the very busy and important Mayor of Whoville at noon at Macy's on State (5th Floor) for a very special reading of the classic children's book Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss. Earlier this week I told all of you about the Jake Warehouse Sale in Andersonville (5215 N. Ravenswood). My husband and I went last night, and I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for cool designer clothing and don't want to pay the cool designer prices. Women's clothing includes dresses, tops, blazers, pants, shoes (booties and flats), belts and other accessories. Tops were marked down to as low as $20. An entire wall of denim is marked down to $30. In fact, the denim alone might make it worth the hike to Andersonville. Men's clothing (mostly summer) is still on the expensive side, but designer dress shirts get as low as $50, pants are marked down $40. Shorts are $25. Sale runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 9. Good luck and let me know if you find anything!

The lifestyle boutique (left) and pedicure stations at Silken Tent in Glenview.

These two events in the burbs seem pretty cool (and see my post below for six free shopping events in the city!):

SATURDAY, OCT. 18: Silken Tent, an "eco-chic" spa and boutique at 2300 Chestnut in Glenview, is hosting a one-year anniversary celebration where you can shop from their favorite local green designers, get accessorizing tips from Paul Lewin of Tivi and decorate organic cookies with Beth and Craig Nielson of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas. The free event is from 1 to 5 p.m., but you can stay for dinner and take a class with Silken Tent chef Tim Kuck and learn how he prepares Cherry Vanilla Chicken. The class is from 5 to 6 p.m. and costs $25.00 per person -- price includes dinner and goodie bag. RSVP at (847) 510-1240.

SATURDAY, OCT. 18: Learn makeup, skincare and fragrance trends and get one-on-one consultations at the Fall Cosmetics Trend Show at Nordstrom, 100 Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook. Tickets are $15 per person, which is redeemable towards a purchase made at the event. Light refreshments are at 7:15 a.m., show is at 8 a.m., and one-on-one consultations are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. To RSVP or for more information, (630) 571-2121, ext. 1840.

Snag some discounts and raise a glass at the one-year anniversary party for SoKo Fashion, 1925 W. Chicago.

Free shopping parties are one of the city's best kept secrets. You can't really beat getting discounts on clothes, hanging out with your friends while downing a few cocktails and playing "fashion show." This weekend there are six notable fashion events. Here's a roundup (and good luck choosing!):

1. TODAY, OCT. 16: SHOPPING BENEFIT AND COCKTAIL PARTY AT MARLOWE
Celebrate the 12 most powerful and influential women in Chicago (and maybe hit them up for some tips) as they unveil their "biz-over" -- a business and style makeover -- and enjoy hors d'oeuvres by aigredoux and cocktails at Marlowe (800 N. Michigan). Ten percent of the sales at the shop that evening will benefit the Pursuit of Passion Inc., and Thodos Dance Chicago. You must RSVP to kristen@graceprgroup.com by 11 a.m. today. The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. Oh, and did I mention the first 100 guests will receive a VIP gift bag?

2. FRIDAY, OCT. 17: JOEL HALL DANCE CENTER SHOPPING PARTY

Andersonville Galleria (5247 N. Clark), a retail market building featuring more than 50 tenants offering apparel, jewelry, artwork and more, will host a shopping party Friday. Snag some refreshments and take comfort in knowing that a portion of your cash will go to the Joel Hall Dance Center in Andersonville, one of Chicago's largest dance education facilities (and a place this Shopping blogger once took a few jazz and tap classes many years ago). The Galleria is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

3. SATURDAY, OCT. 18: SoKo FASHION'S ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY
Get 15 percent off purchases and enjoy hot cider, wine and snacks as you help boutique owner Sheri Roney celebrate the one-year anniversary of her East Village store, SoKo Fashion (1925 W. Chicago). Her mission was to bring "affordable, trendy clothing to Chicago Avenue." Party is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

4. SATURDAY, OCT 18: DAY OLD BREAD SALE AT THE T-SHIRT DELI
The T Shirt Deli (1739 N. Damen) is hosting its first-ever Day Old Bread Sale, where they'll try to sell their, um, screw-ups. Like a shirt that was supposed to say "Devoted to You," but instead says "Demoted to You," or a coveted "Edwards for President" tote. Prices range from $5-$20. Sale is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

5. SATURDAY, OCT. 18: ALICE BERRY FALL 2O08 TRUNK SHOW AT B
Check out Alice Berry's new collection of scarves, jackets, outerwear and evening wear at B (1117 W. Armitage). Alice will be there to help you find the best fit for your shape and size, and with a purchase, you can snag a gift bag that includes coupons for Infuse Yoga Spa, Lincoln Park Massage and more. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

6. SUNDAY, OCT.19: p.45 BIRTHDAY PARTY
Celebrate 11 years of Bucktown boutique p.45 (1643 N. Damen) with cocktails, cupcakes and the chance to win a gift bag (which contains items from p.45 designers and is valued at more than $1,000). There are 11 gift bags to win -- good luck! Party is from noon to 5 p.m.

So that's the roundup, now do some shopping for me. And if you attend one of these events -- write me a note and let me know how it was. And as always, if anyone has any shopping questions or subjects you'd like me to address, let me know. Happy shopping!

p45.jpg

Still having trouble knowing what color cocktail ring to wear with a black dress? Do you own a pair of red heels that just don't go with anything? We're all still trying to figure this whole thing out, and p.45, 1643 N. Damen, wants to help. Grab some girlfriends and head over to the Bucktown boutique for a free round-table discussion on how to complete your look with accessories, jewelry and shoes. From 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 15.

I've always thought Matilda, 3101 N. Sheffield in Lakeview (my favorite bar in the city), carried a girl-friendly vibe. The whimsical and cozy bar and restaurant is decorated with large hanging stars and twinkle lights, has an incredible jukebox stocked with plenty of female-friendly indie rock like Feist and Bloc Party, and offers specials like half-priced wine and appetizer nights (which practically beg for girls' nights). And now Matilda is proving its devotion to Chicago ladies by hosting a Spa Night tonight sponsored by Lakeview salon and spa Studio Within. This is a pretty good deal: Enjoy one hour of top shelf open bar (7:30 to 8:30 p.m.), an appetizer buffet, express manicures, bang trims, color consultations, mini facials & eyelash applications. Cost is $30 per person. Spa treatments will be available from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. RSVP to kevin@matilda-babyatlas.com. Enjoy!

I attended the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion show Wednesday, which was the kickoff event for Fashion Focus Chicago (why don't they just call it Chicago Fashion Week -- wouldn't that be less confusing?). Anyway, the event showcased emerging Chicago designers, and the clothes (and shoes) were fantastic. Pete Wentz of Fallout Boy hosted the event, which means he came out beforehand and spoke for two minutes, giving us the sad Cubs score and thanking Gen Art for finally giving a guy who is only 5'6" the chance to stand on a runway. The event was free, and so are the other fashion show events during Fashion Focus. All you have to do is RSVP at the official Web site. So bring your friends and pretend like you're "Project Runway" judges (which one of you will be Nina?). Here are the three remaining fashion shows -- all are free and open to the public:

Who wants to mingle and find new clothes for fall? These two shopping events sound perfect for a girls' night out:

Tonight: Grab your girlfriends and head over to the new Akira, 643 W. Diversey, for a free Girl's Night Out event from 5 to 10 p.m. that includes 15 percent off all purchases, makeup consultations, hair styling, manicures, a bachelor auction with athletes from the Chicago Machine (Chicago's lacrosse team), food and cocktails. No reservations needed.

Now through mid-August: Mix art and shopping and stop by Club Monaco's new Bucktown location, 1731 N. Damen, for a new black-and-white photography exhibit curated by the Chicago Photography Center. All photos will be for sale; proceeds will benefit the center.
