January 2010 Archives

Every year at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, instead of tiny sequin dresses and suits we normally see on red carpets, we get turtlenecks, stocking caps, fur-trimmed coats and coffee cups as an accessory.

And the scarves. Oh, the scarves. That seems to be the accessory of choice at Sundance this year. And despite the casual looks, I'm guessing celebs still have their stylists plan their outfits down to every last knit accessory.

So here's a roundup of the bundled up celebrities this past week at Sundance.

As always, let me know who you like and who you don't!

These photos crack me up a bit. But I guess you gotta love a guy who knows how to work an accessory. LEFT: Wilmer Valderrama from the film "The Dry Land" poses for a portrait Sunday. RIGHT: Diego Luna, at Sundance with the film he directed "Abel," poses Tuesday. Who's got the better toss? My vote goes to Diego. For pretty much anything. Carlo Allegri~AP

Fun with fake laughing!: Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, from the film "Blue Valentine," have a "good time" in their winter coats during a portrait Monday. Carlo Allegri~AP

Fix Boutique, 1101 W. Fulton, now carries men's and women's shoes in addition to clothing and accessories. And from now until Monday, February 1, anyone who donates a pair of gently used shoes will receive 20 percent off any shoe purchase.

The donated shoes will be given to Soles4Souls, a global charity that is now working to donate over one million pairs of shoes to Haiti to help the earthquake survivors.

Shoe designers at Fix include Cynthia Vincent (above left) and Leoffler Randall (right).

Veruca Salt's new spring items are in, and this week, the more you spend, the more you'll save: Spend $100, save $10; spend $200, save $25; spend $500, save $100, and spend $1,000 and save $250.

Sale will run tomorrow, January 27, to Friday, January 28.

In addition to this sale, winter clothing is marked down from 50 to 70 percent off.

Locations are 520 N. Kingsbury (773-276-3888) and 1921 N. Damen (773-276-9888).

Hours for both locations: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Adorable gifts boutique Virtu, 2034 N. Damen, is offering a handful of sales this month: 10 percent off everything in the store; selected items are 20 to 40 percent off. All sales are final, and the sales last through January 31.

The cute little Bucktown shop offers stationary, greeting cards, candles, jewelry, ceramics and other home items. Virtu also sells a line of jewelry I love called Poppi, which makes beautiful cocktail-style rings made of glass beads. I'm a huge fan of the rings because they look great with either a dress or a casual, T-shirt-and-jeans look.

If anyone gets the Virtu newsletter, you'll know owner Julie Horowitz Jackson loves to chat. Her lengthy e-mails include in-depth descriptions of new store items, sale announcements, and she loves to thank her customers for being so faithful over the years.

Now you can follow her on Facebook, where she'll post information -- in much shorter form -- about sales and store events.

Happy sale shopping!

While I'm of the opinion that leggings are NOT pants (despite what I still see some Chicago women wearing), l love a good legging with a dress or long sweater.

And these -- the Military Button Detail Leggings, $29 at AKIRA -- are pretty darn cute.

The Chicago boutique chain includes the leggings in their list of Top 10 favorite items for the new year. For the other 9 (which include a faux fur vest and a gorgeous vintage-inspired floral and black vest), go to
