Chicago fashion week events: Go to a free fashion show or screen-print your own T-shirt

I attended the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion show Wednesday, which was the kickoff event for Fashion Focus Chicago (why don't they just call it Chicago Fashion Week -- wouldn't that be less confusing?). Anyway, the event showcased emerging Chicago designers, and the clothes (and shoes) were fantastic. Pete Wentz of Fallout Boy hosted the event, which means he came out beforehand and spoke for two minutes, giving us the sad Cubs score and thanking Gen Art for finally giving a guy who is only 5'6" the chance to stand on a runway. The event was free, and so are the other fashion show events during Fashion Focus. All you have to do is RSVP at the official Web site. So bring your friends and pretend like you're "Project Runway" judges (which one of you will be Nina?). Here are the three remaining fashion shows -- all are free and open to the public:

Dress Code -- Chicago Fashion Design School's Show: 7:30 tonight at
Millennium Park at the Chase Promenade tent (on Randolph between Michigan
and Columbus).

The Allure of Couture: 7:30 p.m. Monday at Millennium Park at the Chase Promenade tent (on Randolph between Michigan and Columbus).

Macy's presents the Designers of Chicago 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Millennium Park at the Chase Promenade tent (on Randolph between Michigan and Columbus).

OTHER FASHION WEEK EVENTS YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT: There are over a dozen events that are part of Fashion Focus Chicago this weekend. Here are three this weekend that I think look pretty darn cool:

-- Gen Art's Shop Chicago: Snag the best accessories and clothing offered by talented designers and boutiques from across the country. Did I mention there are spa treatments? From 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Millennium Park at Chase Promenade North on Randolph between Michigan and Columbus. Admission: VIP $40 (includes VIP Lounge Access, VIP Shopping Hour, Gift Bag) General Admission: FREE; Reservations required; RSVP at www.genart.org.

-- T-shirt Frenzy: Screen-print a T-shirt using stencils of your choice with guidance from International Academy of Design & Technology Chicago students. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Blick Art Materials, 42 S. State; Admission is free; For more information, call (312) 980-9298.

-- A Fashion Performance:
Designer/artist Alice Berry explores the tension between personal artistic expression and the business of fashion. This special presentation features live models, projection, poetry and three of her collections: the Color Work; Green; and Fall 2008-9. At 7 p.m/ at the Chicago Cultural Center in the Claudia Cassidy Theater, 77 E. Randolph; For reservations, please call: (773) 384-7279; Admission is free.
