Don't be so hard on yourself.
Richard Thompson is awesome, but is there any specific reason you posted this?
Proof positive that it's the singer, not the song.
Thanks for brightening my day.
Thompson also does a great job w/Nelly Furtado.
I love Richard Thompson. I got the chance to see him play this live during one of his 1000 Years of Popular Music shows. It was awesome.
Richard Thompson, possibly the greatest living guitar player. He's been doing this world's most popular music thing, or whatever it's called, for the last ten years or so. And this Britney Spears staple has become his own. On one level, I like how he rearranges it without making it feel too separate from the original. He fleshes out the chord changes and gives it a deeper emotional resonance. Yet it still has something tongue-in-cheek, which really bothers me. These types of covers, naturally, disgust me. So, it's a tossup. I'm willing to give it a pass as it's Thompson and he's kind of a genius.
Thing is, this is actually a pretty well-written song.
And you know what? I once heard an acoustic version of "...Baby One More Time" that was even better, proving that at its core it's actually a pretty damn good song about a very unhealthy relationship. (It was performed by an obscure singer at an open mic night, and he blew everybody away--wish I had video.) What a shame that a solid piece of pop music will forever be linked to (ugh) Britney Spears. If somebody else had made it a hit first, it could have been a true classic, not just nostalgic kitsch.
Oh, the Monkees rule, and I say that as somebody without any nostalgia for them at all.
It takes a big man to admit he searches youtube for covers of Brittney Spears songs. You are that big man.
Richard Cheese eat your heart out!
Good stuff. Reminds me of the Flaming Lips cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head":

Amazing. Proves once again that live music makes everything better, even synthetic over-produced pop songs.
I love the way he sings "but to lose all my senses..." at 1:16. I can almost imagine Britney listening to that and cracking a sad, knowing little smile.
I never thought Thompson was any great shakes as a guitarist, but not until this video did I realize he can sing pretty well after all!
This proves that there is no such thing as a bad song, only bad versions of songs.
Dustin,
Absolutely there are bad songs. This just doesn't happen to be one of them. Never was. You simply had a bias against the song, as I did, because Britney sucks.
It's kind of amazing to me that the same two guys who wrote this song also produced the original Britney Spears track. That's kind of like building a solid framework for a house and then picking a chimpanzee to be the interior decorator. Only it's worse, because they actively helped her ruin the song, like they handed the chimp a paint brush and said, "Here, Bubbles. I think lime green would look good on that floor."
Okay, so I don't know much about architecture, but I do know something about chimps.
I don't think she sucks. She lyp-sincs and her personal life is a disaster zone, but she's a terrific dancer, and I think she's a talented vocalist. I'm not saying that she's great (she's certainly not my cup of tea) but I think it's unfair to say that she sucks or that she's crap etc...
First time I met you I thought you were just another girl
But ooo when ya told me ya loved me my head began to whirl
I realized that you've heard it a million times before
You should be wise now you've heard it, and open up your doooor!
There's a bad one. Let's see Thompson OR Britney Spears make that sound good. Not funny, good.
Bad lyrics don't make a song bad. We're talking music not literature.
