100 Ways to Love a Cat: Way 34

Those who think this is funny (as I do) and those who think it is not funny probably do so for the very same reasons. Your take?

I think that's the latest by The Fray, right?

Haha. I'm nominating this for Best feature, best Song, best lead actor(!), best art direction and best cinematography...

And then what?!?

Then I woke up...

Well, the reason I don't think it's funny is because it isn't funny, but that's probably not why you think it *is* funny, so I'm stumped.

This reminds me of the two cats (Shorthair kitties) I once had. You should have seen them in the dryer, they hated it. :)/:(

MarkH,

A reason for a belief cannot be the very same belief itself; doing so is simply begging the question. If asked why the video isn't funny, by saying "Well, it is because it isn't funny" you are really not saying anything at all. We know you don't think it is funny; but what principled reason(s) do you have for thinking so?

I cried. There was something about the cat's disquieted perplexion that really moved me.

To be honest, I'm not sure why I find this video so hilarious. It really is bizarre what certain people find funny (and why).

So first off, you have the song, which contains quite a bit of understated stupidity:
1. The first notes matching with the appearance of the words in the title got a giggle out of me. (The two cat faces replacing the zeros is the punch line.)
2. I think the funniest part of the song itself is "Way 34!" Maybe it's the WAY he says it, or just the randomness of the number. (It's funny to me because it made me think of someone ACTUALLY making a list of literally 100 ways to love a cat, numbering each one for reasons that only make sense to the list-maker.)
3. "Set him by the window." Perhaps the makers of the video simply intended for this to be random, but I found it funny because...honestly, what else can you do to love a cat? Cats don't give a damn about anything you do around them, for them, or just in general. On some subconscious level, one might think that placing a cat by the window serves as a gesture of affection. (The punch-line here is the cat's reaction.)
4. The song is essentially the same line over and over again.

Then you have the shot of the cat, which only gets funnier every time I re-watch the video:
1. The cat's obvious confusion with the situation he's found himself in. His posture is....just funny...I'm not sure how to explain it...
2. The cat's indifference to being "set by the window." And the shot continues several seconds after the cat leaves just so the song can finish.

Hmmm.....I don't know. I'm probably just reading way to deep into a very simple video....

(But it's still funny...)

Yes, for me it begins with the title, and the idea of celebrating the 100 Ways in song. (Whereas there must be 50 ways to leave your lover...) From then on there's almost nothing that is NOT funny, including the little cat-cushion in front of the window (and the birdhouse with the heart-shaped opening), and the traffic that goes by outside, oblivious to the expression, and rejection, of Way 34...

Ah, yes! I'm glad you mentioned the traffic outside, I had forgotten about that. (The precise positioning of the cars parked across the street also struck me as inexplicably funny.) My favorite object in the room has to be the strangely shaped glass vase(?) filled with....leaves? Rocks? What IS it? Videos like this become even funnier when you observe the specific oddities they contain.

For me it was truly reason 3 that made me laugh. Cats love what they love when they want to. Sheer absurdity. To make fun of people that think they know how to "love" their cat. I always shake my head when I hear a pet owner proclaim how much their pet "loves" something every time, then do that thing and, as in the video, the pet walks away. My cat has done it to me several times. Always a let down for the people waiting to see my cat play fetch.

I also find it absolutely hilarious that you can choose to watch the video all the way up to blu-ray (1080p) resolution.

I watched that video when you posted it and didn't give it much thought. But, much to my surprise, I have kept remembering it at random times, and every time I do it seems funnier. I think some of it is the mind's need to re-construct memories in a way that makes sense, but in this case it can't be done. I remember that semi-whiney-sing-song voice, the obvious lack of participation of the cat, the way he says "way thirty four" as if there are actually 33 other videos like this. Every time this clip enters my mind, part of me is still trying to make sense of it, and that part of me keeps yelling an increasingly exasperated "WHAT THE HELL?"

Yes, part of the joy is that there is no punch line -- other than the cat not particularly appreciating the love. I just love how the shot continues, empty (but with the same emotional music), until that last discordant piano note. Humor is often about overturning expectations, and the thwarted expectation of a punch line that never comes is funny to me.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

i love cats. so cute animals.

love this song it gets my sister out of my room and makes my mom want to clean
