Two of the better fest trailers I've seen, from the 2009 Vancouver International Film Festival:
Sex after the jump:
"There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view that I hold dear." -- Daniel Dennett
"Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out." -- Martin Scorsese (2007, but I've been harping on it for years)
Is it just me or does the second video undermine its own purpose?
It says to have an open mind, but all the stuff going on is enforcing the stereotype that art films just depict weird sex or random images just to be arbitrarily provocative with no actual purpose (which some do, to be sure, but still...).
Funniest part is the bear reveal after "Or sexuality altogether..."
Enjoyed that trailer. Though I did feel an uncomfortable tinge of what Jack mentions as I watched it.
JE: All three of this year's VIFF trailers were gently poking fun at the films, the festival that programmed them, and the audience that came to see them. That's what I liked about their attitude. VIFF showed more than 300 movies this year and, yes, they are quite aware of the stereotype about artsy/indie films and sex -- and the truth that gave rise to it! The third trailer (not as good as these two) involved endings that are so arbitrary "they're almost genius.... Almost." Good-natured Canadian clear-sightedness, sans snark.
"Good-natured *Canadian* clear-sightedness, sans snark."
...Well, maybe in Vancouver. I encounter my share of Ontario snark on a daily basis.
JE: True, it may be more of an East-West (or Toronto-Vancouver) thing...
The second one is hilarious. And yes, the bear is the funniest part.
The "Sexuality" spot won a Best in Show at the Lotus Awards (BC ad industry award show).
