See? They think "Doubt" is a comedy, too....
And, as it goes on, they get deeper (the Apatow-produced "Step Brothers," in which Rogen appears), and deeper (Franco as Scott Smith, in a romantic screen kiss with Harvey Milk), and deeper (Ram Jam!) and deeper (Janusz Kaminski) into the movies -- just like their characters do in "Pineapple Express" itself.
Unquestionably the highlight of the evening. Franco seeing himself in Milk is perhaps the most form-shifting thing I've ever seen at the Oscars.
And I finally got to her Kaminski speak. He is a funny man and I love him.
One of the strangest and most welcome Oscar shorts ever. Seeing Janusz Kaminsi in it struck me as a sublimely perfect piece of randomness. The transition from Milk to The Wrestler is an amazingly concise one, and also serves as a microcosm of the work of Judd Apatow. Kudos to all participants. A funny short that is rich in detail.
Once again, Franco steals the show. Look at the way he gazes, apparently disapprovingly, at The Love Guru, and then just cracks up: "It's good." Just wonderful.
Something to note, Kaminski photographed Apatow's upcoming third film as a director, "Funny People."
Ah, I wondered if there was some Apatow/Kaminski connection I was missing. Thanks, Nick.
Loved Kaminski's "Suck on that, Anthony Dod Mantle" too.
Too many of the local critics where I live--New Orleans--took it way too seriously, so it was refreshing to see I wasn't alone thinking that "Doubt" is ridiculous. The way the short cuts back and forth between the film clips and their laughter is priceless.
Am I the only who thinks this bit is a near-miss? Firstly, the audience sounds like it's been 'artificially enhanced' with a laugh track. Real or fake, the laughter is distracting and the bit would have played better without us hearing it. Secondly, as far as I'm concerned the Kaminski cameo is merely awkward. All he can do is deliver flat lines and get in way of the chemistry the real actors have. I thought it was a lame stunt that ground the skit to a halt.
This better be nominated for best live-action short film at next year's Oscars.
Even as somebody who liked the movies they're making fun of, I understand how the acting could seem hilariously over the top to people. But I occasionally like me some ham. Depends what the movie is and falls back into that age old 'are movies' greatest strength that they're more realistic than other art forms or are they heightened reality?' debate. I can appreciate both.
As for this clip, hilarious, like "Pineapple Express". One of the highlights of the evening. (Another was Steve Martin.) Loved the "Milk" moment. Loved "I LOVE THIS MOVIE" watching "The Wrestler". Loved The Kaminski cameo.
Love that The Academy could make some fun of itself this year.
Even in the opening skit with Jackman,"How come comic book movies never get nominated? How could a billion dollars not be sophisticated?" I like that they acknowledged that there was some disagreement with their picks. "The Reader! I didn't see The Reader!"
Easily my favorite part of the Oscars (from what I saw of it, anyway), but I'm shocked they failed to include one of the best comedies of 2008: "Gran Torino"!
I love the fact that the section was all about weed and being stoned, clearly, (well, and the sexual tension between the two stoners), but never actually featured even the mention of weed.
