What was YOUR favorite comedy of 2006?

| | Comments (15)

Don't ask me how I came up with these dozen options -- that's all the software allows, and these were the ones I thought of -- either because they were popular, conspicuous, or got some year-end recognition. (So sorry to all you fans of "Benchwarmers," "Failure to Launch," "John Tucker Must Die," "Little Man," "Madea's Family Reunion" and "You, Me & Dupree.") Choices are limited to predominantly English-language, live-action pictures, which is why "Babel" isn't listed. The box is a bit long. Just select the square next to the title of your choice, then scroll down and press the vote button at the bottom. The results will display automatically.

You forgot "Stranger Than Fiction."

JE: I considered it, Chris, but felt it wasn't just intended to be a comedy. (IMDb assigns it four genres: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance.) And I was limited to twelve slots!

Where's Tristram Shandy?

JE: Good point, Matt. That was one of my favorites (I just forgot it was a 2006 release, because I saw it in Toronto in 2005. Because nobody'd voted for "Little Man" (and that was a joke, anyway), I put "Tristram" into its slot -- so, yes, now the poll is not entirely in alphabetical order.

Just thought I would point out that it is "Thank You For Smoking," no "Not"...unless it is supposed to be a joke because this is a comedy post, in which case I just killed your joke.

I actually chose Clerks II. While I thoroughly enjoyed Borat, it just didn't stick with me nearly as much as some other movies.

I think my second favorite would have to be Thank You For Smoking, though I do plan on watching Idiocracy this weekend, and I have yet to see For Your Consideration.

Perhaps my vote was premature....

Obviously, I know which movie you mean, but there is no "not" in Thank You For Smoking

JE: Force of habit! Thanks. It's fixed.

Where was A Prairie Home Companion on that list? Not extremely popular, and not a lot of end of year recognition (well, some by a few critics), but certainly conspicuous.

JE: I considered it, but then I decided it was so much more than just a comedy that it seemed out of place with the other movies on the list. Although I think of it primarily as a comedy (and put it in the top half of my own ten-best list for the year), it belongs to a category both larger and more specific than "comedy": Robert Altman movies.

Of the ones I saw on the list, "Tristram Shandy" was the only one I thought was particularly funny, though "Borat" had its laugh out loud moments. My favorite comedy of the year by far was "This Filthy World," the comedy concert film of John Waters' standup routine. Funniest movie I have seen in years.

I also thought "Scoop" was better than mot gave it credit for, a throw-away Woody Allen film, sure, but a cute and amusing one.

...Boy, you put up a simple poll, all of a sudden you're swamped in "Where's ______?" comments..... :-)

Went with Borat, out of sheer respect for Sacha Baron Cohen's audacity (and hilarity), but there were four other movies on that list that I could have easily chosen--and that's not counting the ones I haven't seen yet like Tristram Shandy. 2006 was such a great year for comedy.

My pick for "Say, where's (insert movie here) on that list?" is Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. Yeah, it was rough around the edges, but it's still among the funniest movies I saw last year. From now on, all heist and techno-thrillers should play "Storm the Gates" during break-in and intrusion scenes. Long live the D.

Oh, being forced by technology to choose just one! All right, I did it, and I've saved the hedging for the comments section!

I couldn't, in good conscience, not choose Borat for my favorite-- it's just too rich, and Baron Cohen's performance too original for there to be any other choice for me.

That said, at the risk of being chalked up as just another Frito, it pained me to leave off my three runners-up: Idiocracy, Jackass Number Two and Beerfest. Clerks II and Little Miss Sunshine weren't even close, in terms of subversive pleasure and belly laughs, to any of these lowbrow treats.

As for Talladega Nights, I thought it worked in fits and starts, and I really loved the relationship between Ricky Bobby and Jean Girard, but for me Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy remains Will Ferrell's masterpiece... so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree!

I'm behind on Mutual Appreciation too. I was a big fan of Funny Ha Ha, so I hope to get to it soon. And finally, maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it, but I found Tristram Shandy much less interesting than I thought I would when I finally saw it last week. In no way did I think it was bad or somehow underachieveing, but it just didn't pop off the screen and dazzle me like Winterbottom's previous Steve Coogan-starring effort, 24 Hour Party People. Did you see that one, Jim?

Thanks for the pop quiz! And thanks for the Babel jab too-- as many eye-rolling laughs as that movie had in it, it really does deserve its own category.

I thought the Thank You For Smoking mistake was some kind of Boratian "not joke."

"Borat" would definitely take the cake, but I'm glad that "Tristram Shandy", another one of my favourite films of 2006, is also getting some love. I agree that "A Prairie Home Companion" is much more than a comedy...its more of a comedy of warmth than a laugh-out-loud film. I also enjoyed "Clerks II", but for pure laugh ratio, "Borat" and "Tristram Shandy" were the class of the year.

"Choices are limited to predominantly English-language, live-action pictures, which is why "Babel" isn't listed."

I tip my hat, sir.

Dennis - re: 24-Hour Party People

I don't want to speak out of turn, but I believe that film is one of Jim's favourites. There was a "Scanners" post about it before the transfer to the new blog.

"Tristam Shandy" and "Borat" were both great, but "Idiocracy" was the only one we watched, then immediately watched again. Then, the next night, we watched it again. Then we sat and watched "Ow! My Balls!" on the menu screen for awhile and laughed our a--es off.

It was hi-freaking-larious and by FAR the most quotable movie of the year (there's a contest for you). I hope it finds an audience the way "Office Space" did.

Good to see Jackass up there -- not only my pick for 2006's best comedy but best film, period. (Stop looking at me funny like that.) Wish it was getting more support, but alas, alas...
