From The Onion, October 23, 2006:
"I've been making pictures for 40 years," said the intense, fast-talking Scorsese in an excerpt from "The Entitled," during which the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" can be heard in the background. "For 40 years, I've been making pictures. And I've always been fascinated with the struggles a man must endure when people don't appreciate him. People say I'm the best. I didn't say it, they did. I just do my work. But for years they've been talking and you know it. You do. I deserve that award, is all I'm saying."[...]
"For years I did the little pictures about the types of people I grew up with," said a passionately gesturing Scorsese in another "Entitled" scene. "Then I did the prestige-y, historical stuff like 'Last Temptation' and 'The Age Of Innocence' because I related to the characters, you know, outsiders in repressive environments making fateful choices. Then I started making the big sweeping epics, like 'Kundun' and 'The Aviator.' I've made comedies and documentaries, even concert films. Ever heard of 'The Last Waltz'? No? Okay. You should."
Continued Scorsese, "What happens? Nothing. Nothing for the versatile visionary who lives and breathes pictures."

Go Scorcese,
I've always found Hollywood, even on the level I'm working at to be full of bluffers. People who speak hyperbole, throw around the word brilliant, then allow nothing to come of it. A lot of talk and no follow through. Because the money isn't always where the brilliance is at.
I think regardless though, whether he wins an Oscar or not, he will be considered one of the greatest American Filmmakers, even Filmmakers, and that says more to me than some director who made one movie that hardly anyone is going to remember then go on to make mediocre films the rest of his career -- and I can name a handful right now. Scorcese deserves better than an Oscar.
LOL! That's great! Gotta love The Onion..... even when they're telling the truth! Seriously, AMEN!
My God, The Last Waltz is pretentious. It takes itself so bloody seriously that it achieves a whole new level of rock pomposity, very slyly destroyed a few years later by the inimitable This is Spinal Tap, of course.
In fact, The Last Waltz works as a brilliant double-bill with This is Spinal Tap.
Martin Scorsese deserves more than one academy award. Here are just two films that I believe he absolutely should have won best director for:
1. Taxi Driver
2. Goodfellas
Come on. I'm not big into the whole awards thing, but I know that Martin Scorsese deserves at least half the amount Spielberg has.
Even more incredible: Scorsese wasn't even nominated for Taxi Driver!
