epigraphs
"I don't think you go to a play to forget, or to a movie to be distracted. I think life generally is a distraction and that going to a movie is a way to get back, not go away." -- Tom Noonan
"Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out." -- Martin Scorsese
“An idea does not exist apart from the words that express it. Style is not an envelope enclosing a message; the envelope is the message.” -- Dwight Macdonald
"There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view that I hold dear." -- Daniel Dennett

I'll be in Toronto covering the fest for stylusmagazine.com. Hope to see you there.
Glad you're making the trip to The Center of the Universe! Looks like it should be a good festival this year -- I've got my tickets lined up to 35 movies. (No industry screenings for us commoners!) Right now, the title that has me drooling in anticipation the most is Guy Maddin's latest silent movie dream "Brand Upon The Brain!" with an orchestra, narrator, foley artists, and a castrato. (Yikes!)
I look forward to your comments on all the great movies I've invariably overlooked in my planning...
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Fountain and Inland Empire! (I think they're both playing there)
I'm green with envy. I made it to the TIFF for a weekend in 2002, a weekend that's now a front-runner for Best Weekend Of My Life...
Gonna miss Roger's festival update's from Toronto. I love reading all the festival write ups, but especially Toronto because Roger seemed to get so excited by seeing so many good movies after going through the summer schlock, and the aptly named "dump month" of August. It's like he falls in love with the movies all over again every September.
Looking forward to reading your write-ups though this year, Jim. Good luck, and have fun.
I've got my ticket to the premiere of Rescue Dawn!
Jim: Have a great time in Toronto. I really wish I could be there, and maybe someday I'll make it. I've got my fingers crossed for Pan's Labyrinth and the multitude of surprises that hopefully are lying in wait for you, and for us all. Enjoy! I can't wait to read your reports!
