Schneider hurt as streak ends

Crystal Lake Central's Joey Kielbasa snapped a 59-match winning streak by Lane's Max Schneider when the two defending state champion wrestlers met at last week's Lincoln Invitational.

Kielbasa, last season's Class 2A champ at 145 pounds, pinned Schneider, the reigning 145 champ in 3A, at 2:57 in the 152-pound title match on Thursday.

During the match, Schneider injured his left shoulder, but refused to default the match. He won his state title - the first by a Lane wrestler since 1946 - while competing with a torn left rotator cuff.

Schneider's last loss before Thursday was to Lake Zurich's Kevin Fanta in the Class 3A 135-pound state championship in 2009. The Lane star went 40-0 last season and won his first 19 matches this season before losing to Kielbasa.

Kielbasa lost to yet another defending state champ - Montini's Stephen Robertson, the Class 2A 140 winner last season - two weeks ago in the Dvorak tournament at Machesney Park. Robertson won that match 3-2.
