Chris Head out at Brooks

| 13 Comments | No TrackBacks

The Sun-Times' Clyde Travis spoke with Brooks principal Dushon Brown earlier today:

"I had to let Chris go," Brown said. "It became apparent that we had philosophical differences and I just thought a change should be made. I feel the program has no where to go but up. We are doing a search and will fill the position before the school year."

Good she had the kahunas to oust him. I here the parents are sick of his treatment of their kids. He is out - of - control. Coaching with intimidation and fear is a thing of the past. Kids will not play under these conditions. He may not get another opportunity to coach. It's hard for a leopard to change his spots. I wonder if he has learned that his attitude and coaching style must change. It will be interesting to see who/if anyone hires him next.

PHILOSOPHICAL DIFFERENCES, I WONDER WHAT THIS COMMENT REALLY MEANS?

I almost sure chris isn't losing any sleep over this... He'll have a job b4 the end of this week in principle, write it down now! If your kid is intimidated over words, i'm sorry parents u haven't done your job! My kid could play for him anyday of the week!

This seems like a bad decision especially when you fire a well experienced coach who is the reason brooks was back on the map.

Does this surprise anyone? He's been mistreating his players for years. He never should have been the coach at Westinghouse. Frank Griseto was doing well and got run out on a rail. Could Head, the sophomore coach at the time, have had anything to do w/that? He got away w/murder in the Public League for years and then his act didn't fly at Proviso West. He's as corrupt as they come. He umpired Public League Baseball and did some reprehensible things in that capacity as well. I'm guessing he just isn't a very good guy. When you hire a security guard to lead your program, you get what you deserve. That's right, to the best of my knowledge, this guy has never been a certified teacher.

I think all of the whiners should just be quiet , Mr Head is the best coach by far in the State,HE HAS MULTIPLE TITLES WITH MULTIPLE TEAMS and he's never even played basketball. Every team he coaches excels. Dr. Brown didn't have all these difficulties when he was packing her gym and she was sitting center court at the UIC Pavilion last year, she seemed pretty happy with his coaching style . I admit he may yell at the kids but they know it's only in a game situation, but if you ask any of those kids, they are very happy to have ever been coached under him, because he knows that he truly cares about them, how many kids on his team has ever been ineligible because of grades? Not many if I can remember, other coaches dont' care if your kids don't study they let them fail classes and then say "I didn't know he was failing" If you whining parents think coach Head's attitude and yelling was something, just wait till they get to college, those coaches are for real about coaching and don't care if you or your whining kids don't come to the game .I hope you parents wake up before you damage your kids futures, by wanting a coach to baby and pet them , this is the real world, they need to man up if they ever plan on getting to the NBA!!! Too bad for Brooks, Chris really put them on the map, " who was Gwendolyn Brooks before he came there anyway . I know that Chris will get another job somewhere coaching . And to u Mr Ben Barton , what is it that you do , who are you , what's ur title and what's ur beef?Did he not pick you to be on one of his teams. U seem to know an awful lot about Mr Head and his title.Must've peaked ur interest for you to follow him for that last 15 plus years LOL He must've deserved the job of running the school, he was a mentor and a father to many of the kids who still look up to him .STOP HATING !!!MR BEN

YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A CERTIFIED TEACHER TO BE A COACH!
THE MAN WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PERSONAL DISAGREEMENT WITH THE MAN, THAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO REPAIR, THE MAN IS A WINNER!
CHRIS HEAD WILL COACH AGAIN, AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!

WHY SHOULDN'T HE HAVE BEEN THE COACH AT WESTINGHOUSE, HEAD WAS THE ONE RECRUITING THE PLAYERS, WHY COULDN'T HE BE GIVING THE CHANCE TO COACH THEM, AND YOU SEE HE DID WIN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE HOUSE!

I think a lot of you are on the outside looking in. Being a former student at Brooks, I know for a fact the corruption && politics that goes on there. && it's just Head; Dr. Brown, Alderman Beale, a lot of teachers && staff, and even the police in that district are all playing politics its sad but true. And its not just Brooks. A lot of CPS schools are playing politics with our children's education. I just know Brooks for sure.

&& as far as not being ineligible to play, its because of grades being changed at the last minute or threatening the jobs of teachers who didnt cooperate. I know for a fact tht during the past 3 yrs Head was there, at least 10 of his players jv && varsity were failing major subjects.

Wow!Had no idea I'd get some of you fellas so stirred up. Believe it or not, I have no personal ax to grind w/Chris Head. He's never done a thing to me personally. He's obviously a good coach/recruiter, but I don't know about him being the best in the state. Fact is, he's had some issues at various places and he's the common denominator. Where people out to get him each time he's had issues? Maybe, but doubtful. Usually, where there is smoke, there's fire.

The sour taste in my mouth comes from an incident I witnessed in the mid to late 90's. This is factual. I have nothing to gain by making this up. Saw it with my own eyes and heard it w/my own ears. While umpiring a Public League playoff game (quarter finals I believe),Chris Head ejected a good player from a good team toward the end of the game. The ejected player's team won the game. By rule, the ejected player should not have been allowed to play in the semi-final game. The coach of the opposing team for the semi-final game (and his entire team for that matter)had witnessed the quarter final ejection by Head and assumed that the ejected player would be sidelined. Didn't happen. When questioned, Head claimed that he had warned the player and his coach removed him. B.S. The other coach got w/Head and obviously they were in cahoots. Seems like some of you bloggers know Chris personally. Ask him about that. If he denies it, he's lying. The coach he conspired with was Rich Tomoleoni (Clemente). Maybe that will jog his memory. Tomoleoni, for the record, was a tremendous coach that would have won with or without the ejected player in the next game. Hope that answered some of your questions, fellas. No hatin', just truth tellin'.

I say good riddance, we don't need people like Mr. Headp romoting intimiation and bullying to get the kids to play ball, his mannerism, was overbearing and he is doing some repaing, too bad some people overlook negative mentoring in their quest to have their kids play basketball. Mr. Head needs anger management training and to know you reap what you sow! I will pray for him.

Mr Head can be called a lot of things...but the person that i know is real. Yeah he bs w/everyone, but who doesn't. If we are truly going to judge him just say he wins where ever he goes. At Von Stueben and many of you didn't know he coached there. He won. At Westinghouse he helped build a dynasty. Now here's real knowledge folks...he built his fro-soph team from scratch..look at a lot of the powerhouse schools outside of simeon back in the day..King was built with the best players from someone else's school. He built Westinghouse into a dynasty. He moved to Proviso and he was set up to fail because people were upset for 2 reasons..1. he was paid a high salary for security work and 2. they didn't want him coming to the burbs' with his style. After that mess, he inherited Brooks. Let's be real people, no one had ever heard of this school before, let alone for sports. He put a team together and they took there lumps and this year was poised to be pretty good. For all this mess about his attitude and force, every coach in sports period has an attitude and has to use forceful tactics sometimes. If we as parents and others use those in todays life these kids would not be killing kids. So stop the BS about he did this and that. He also has ran a sucessful aau program which has a couple of national titles. If this man was such a monster...Why are people so willing to send there children to him?

Real Hooper,
Lets be real here. Chris Head has a personality that creates these situations. I don't care how good he can coach, he needs to work on his personality and his serious character flaws. Lets not make excuses for the numerous incidents, suspensions, and firings. Chris himself is the problem and only he can address it. he must change his style. The "me against the world" thing has played out. Sonny Cox is a legend, Chris is a guy who's never learned to treat people with respect and stay out of trouble. No excuses, it's him!

Peace.
