Morgan Park moving down

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

The IHSA has released tentative class breakdowns for the 2010-11 school year and there's one big change in boys basketball: defending Public League champ Morgan Park is set to move down from 4A to 3A.

Wayne Blackshear's Mustangs are one of four city schools scheduled to move down; the others are Juarez, Julian and South Shore.

Eight schools are slated to go up from 3A to 4A, including Crete-Monee, Richards, Oswego, Westinghouse, DeKalb and Prairie Ridge.

There's also movement in the smaller classes. The most noteworthy is probably defending 1A baseball champ Westminster Christian going up to 2A. St. Benedict is among the schools moving down from 2A to 1A.

Dunks are done

Fans of the slam will have one less reason to go to the IHSA boys basketball state finals next March.

The IHSA board of directors at its June meeting approved a recommendation by the Boys Basketball Advisory Committee to drop the slam dunk competition "due to low participation numbers."

So congrats again to Charleston's Joey Miller, who apparently will go down in history as the IHSA's last King of the Hill all-class champion dunker.

Adonis Filer transfers

Mount Carmel rising senior Adonis Filer will transfer to Bishop Noll, a Catholic school in Indiana, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

Steve Filer, Adonis' father, told the Times that his son enrolled at Bishop Noll on Friday.

Filer's transfer is a significant blow to the Caravan's chances at a state title next season. Filer was expected to team with Illinois recruit Tracy Abrams and junior Malcolm Hill-Bey to form one of the top trios in the area.

The Sun-Times' Clyde Travis spoke with Brooks principal Dushon Brown earlier today:

"I had to let Chris go," Brown said. "It became apparent that we had philosophical differences and I just thought a change should be made. I feel the program has no where to go but up. We are doing a search and will fill the position before the school year."

More college players transferring

Add two more players to the list of transfers. According to the Hartford Courant Darius Smith is leaving Connecticut. Jeff Jordan has decided to join Marcus Jordan at Central Florida, according to Jeff Goodman at Fox.

Anyone have any clue as to why so many area players are transferring colleges lately?
