Can you name the two Chicago area high school football players who went on to win the Heisman Trophy?
I expect that most of you remember Fenwick's Johnny Lattner, after all, the former Notre Dame All-America had his No. 34 jersey retired at Solider Field in August at halftime of the Hubbard-Fenwick gme
But the other ...
Here's a clue.
He played in a series that will be contested for the 95th year in a row on Saturday.
It's a rivalry that has produced more than a dozen NFL stars including several Hall of Famers
It's a rivalry that used to be played on Thanksgiving morning at a college field before the days of television
It was former Evanston and Yale star Clint Frank and the Widkits host New Trier Saturday afternoon t 1:30 p.m.
"I think it was a good hire for Illinois," McGinnis said. "He's a fine person. I've met him a few times. He's a loyal guy and a great fit. I think he'll do a good job for them."
On the reaction in the city:
"There hasn't been a reaction. There's no backlash. All the players I know speak highly of him."
InsideCarolina.com broke the story. Here's the Raleigh News and Observer's take on the situation: http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/unc/story/709830.html
As of this afternoon, Shumpert himself was unaware of the controversy. He did mention that of the former Tar Heel players, only Sean May encouraged him to attend North Carolina.
Shumpert is receiving home visits from the coaches of his final three schools this week. Paul Hewitt was at the Shumpert home on Sunday, Roy Williams is visiting tonight and Tom Crean will be there on Thursday. Scott Powers sat down with Shumpert today, so be on the lookout for a full story on the Oak Park star and his recruitment at the Sun-Times new preps site: highschoolsports.suntimes.com.
When is the last time that Waukegan and Wauconda started the football season 3-0?
I know that Otto Graham played at Waukegan, but I'll bet it's been a while
And Koz looks like he has Wauconda headed toward the state playoffs. The big showdown in that league will come Sept. 21 when Grant comes to Wauconda
Waukegan has a big test Saturday when it hosts Glenbrook North (2-1) fresh off its upset win over Maine South
Another when is the last time is when is the last time Thornton started a season 0-3?
It was 15 years since the Wildcats started 0-2 before this season
Simeon coach Robert Smith is ready to talk with Illinois coach Bruce Weber about the assistant coach opening in Champaign.
"If the opportunity arose I would definitely take it," Smith said. "I've always wanted to coach at Illinois."
Smith said he and Weber have discussed Smith's college coaching aspirations in the past, but never about any position at Illinois. Smith was listed as a candidate for the job in the Champaign newspaper today.
"I called coach Weber today but couldn't get a hold of him," Smith said.
Smith, who led the Wolverines to the last two Class AA state titles, has always been a vocal supporter of Illinois.
"As a high school coach I've tried not to be too biased," Smith said. "I want kids to go to Illinois, but you have to let them make their own decisions. I want Illinois to be one of the best teams in the country. I could help them do that as an assistant coach."
Two Friday night games football in the south suburbs pit teams ranked in the Chicago Sun-Times Super 25 going head-tohead — Oak Forest at Richards in a South Suburban crossover and Lincoln-Way Central at Bolingbrook in the SouthWest Suburban
After Richards' dramitic 23-21 victory over Morgan Park on Saturday night at Gately Stadium on a 22-yard field goal with 0.1 seconds to play, Gary Korhonen, the state's winningest coach predicted more of the same when Richards hosts Oak Forest Friday and travels to Lemont next week
"I looked at the three games and thought we could be 3-0, 2-1, 1-2 or 0-3," Kornonen said. "That's how close these teams are." Quarterback Tommie Thomas, a Sun-Times All-Area defensive back last season is a threat on both sides of the line.
Lincoln-Way Central pulled off a huge upset in the opener, coming from a 20-0 deficit to beat East St. Louis in overtime on a Jake Wieclaw field goal. I've been to East St. Louis and winning on that field is a huge achievement. It's one of the toughest places to play in Illinois and has been for years. Bob Shannon's teams dominated the early years of the state playoffs. Wieclaw, also a receiver, was also an All-Area selection by the Sun-Times as a junior kicker.
Bolingbrook fell two yards short of beating Downers Grove South in its opener in a game that was played late on Saturday night at Benedictine University. Coach Ivlow's teams are always in the hunt and Erik Smith, who is committed to Wisconsin, came into the season as one of the area's most heralded running backs. Last year's game between the two powers was a barnburner.
Football's Second Season is the subject of an semi autobiographical book by Tom Lemming, done with Taylor Bell
It is the subject of my prep column that will appear in Friday's Sun-Times
I spoke to Lemming this week and when he did a 30-minute segment of a talk show on Boston radio, the host called the book "the best book I've read on recruiting."
My friend Tim O'Halloran (EdgyTim) said that Lemming is one of teh founding fathers of following football recruiting. "He turned on the faucet and would up with a gusher," Edgy said.
The book gives a unique perspective to close to 30 years of college football recruiting
It was a great read.
