This time Shumpert is down to three schools: North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Marquette...

Shumpert's new list of three schools popped up on Scout.com late this morning.

Clemson and Bradley were knocked off the list of five Shumpert initially gave the Sun-Times.

Shocking, just shocking I tell you. Bruce Weber and his staff manage to lose yet another top in-state recruit.

Does anybody else see the striking resemblance between Weber and Bill Murray from Groundhog Day? What goes around, comes around.

There was NO LIST!!! His high school coach said so! Iman said so! You and those crazy Schmidt brothers are the only ones who made up a list!

O'Brien responds: Do you really think I made up that list? Seriously, why are you obsessed with believing that there was no list, that we just report phantom news?

Goyager,

It's all water under the bridge now but your insistence that there was no list seems at odds with what has transpired since the Sun Times posted and then withdrew its article on July 16th.

The three schools on Shumpert's trimmed list were on the Sun Times list of five. Additionally, Shumpert visited Bradley last week, just as the Sun Times article said he would. I'm not sure what happened with Clemson, but he had a long standing offer from them and may have visited there previously.

You are right to quote his high school coach as denying the existence of a list. But I am unaware of Shumpert making any similar denial. He certainly was not quoted in either the Trib or the Sun Times as denying the list.

Therefore, to suggest that the Sun Times "made up a list" seems to deny what has transpired since then. In hindsight, their article seems to have been factually correct.

I would fault the Sun Times for withdrawing the article without any explanation. Doing so put themselves in an indefensible position, since they couldn't defend something that was no longer there.

But I would also fault Iman Shumpert or someone close to him. Everything I see snd read indicates that the Sun Times was given accurate information regarding Shumpert for publication. Once published, that information was asked to be withdrawn. Complicating matters, his high school coach went to the rival Tribune to deny the list, instead of going to the Sun Times.

All of which added up to a mess. But that doesn't mean the Sun Times report was wrong...

Both O'Brien and awr don't seem to be acquainted with 'irony', which I'm sure Goyager was using in his post. I'm disappointed with both of you, but not surprised.

O'Brien responds: Sorry Clipper, you're wrong. Goyager has been beating that drum for weeks on the message boards. There wasn't any irony in that post. He meant it.

Clipper,

Are you disappointed or suprised at O'Brien's response? Oh the irony of it all...

What all of you need to know about Shumpert is that Oak Park-River Forest High
School athletes rarely matriculate at the U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This goes way, way back to the day when the U of I stole Bob Zuppke from OPRF HS to be its new football coach.

who is Iman Shumpert again?...oh yea he's the kid whose college career wont be followed by a couple of hundred thousand Chicagoland Illinois alums....which is also the reason why the mystical "list" was pulled by the family in the first place..so as not to piss off the local Illini fanbase before Iman hightails it out of town to become the answer to a trivia question

only the Times and this blog belabors under the misconception that chicagoland college basketball fans worship the ACC and Kansas or freakin Memphis......

Sonny Vaccaro said in a recent ESPN Magazine interview that there are college basketball coaches who rountinely pay six figures $$$$$ for high school ballers to attend their college program....what a shocker...maybe someone at the Times ought to have the stones to do an investigative report about what goes on when all these crooks go to take advantage of our local kids...its the 800 pound gorilla that has been sitting in the room for years....

Calilama,

I hope you aren't implying that Iman is getting money. From all accounts he is a stand up kid. Also, of his final 3, GT and Marquette were in on him WAY before the Illini gave him the time of day, chalk it up to Weber being unable to identify talent early, again. Being the first coach or two to recognize someone's talent, and have all that extra time to build a relationship with them really goes a long way.

And UNC, is, well, UNC. Anytime they set their sites on a local product, start preparing yourself to say goodbye, b/c no one can match what they have to offer.

Last, do you think someone of Shumpert's caliber cares about hundereds of thousands alums not following his career? Don't kid yourself. He has his sites on the NBA where he will have hundreds of thousands of fans following his career when he gets drafted. PLUS, if he goes to UNC he will have much more national TV exposure and be on a national championship perennial contender...I think he will be ok with his fanbase.

FYI, I am not a UNC homer by any means. I am an MU grad hoping he fills out a stud '08 back court with Nick Williams - but I have accepted the fact that he is most likely going to UNC.

U of I loses out again.

Goyager should stop being a MErry Man and face reality, Weber cannot recruit.

GET THIS STRAIGHT. THERE WAS NO LIST, AND NO ONE TALKED TO IMAN, COACH AL, OR HIS FATHER FROM THE SUNTIMES. YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT BECAUSE I'M HIS UNCLE, AND WORK FOR HIS FATHER, SO I KNOW MORE THEN ANYONE ELSE ABOUT THIS. AS FAR AS ILLINOIS IS CONCERNED, WEBER LOST OUT ON ALL THE 08 CLASS COMING OUT OF ILLINOIS, SO WHY WOULD IMAN GO THERE. ASK YOURSELF IF YOU WANT TO PLAY FOR A TEAM WITH NO TALENT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. AS FAR AS SOMEONE SAYING HE HAS RECEIVED OR WILL RECEIVE ANY MONEY, FALSE. WE ARE NOT A POOR FAMILY, AND THE KIDS WANT FOR NOTHING. HIS PARENTS ARE DOING WELL, UNCLE'S AND AUNT, SO WHY THE HELL DOES HE NEED TO ACCEPT ANYTHING FROM ANYONE. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM GETTING A GOOD EDUCATION, FROM THE COLLEGE THAT HE CHOOSES, AND THAT'S IT. IF PEOPLE IN CHICAGO DON'T FOLLOW HIM, NO SWEAT, BECAUSE HE HAS ALWAYS LIVED IN OAK PARK, AND THE FAMILY IS WELL RECEIVED AND RESPECTED, AND THE PEOPLE OF OAK PARK LOVE HIM. HE WILL DO VERY WELL IN COLLEGE, AND IT'S CHICAGO'S LOSS BECAUSE BLAME COACH WEBER AND STAFF FOR A TERRIBLE RECRUITING JOB. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW, THE BIG 10 IS NOT THAT COMPETITIVE, JUST PHYSICAL. THE TALENT IS IN THE ACC AS PROOF, I ONLY OFFER RESULTS FROM NCAA PLAYOFFS. IF NEED BE, EMAIL ME AND I'LL GIVE YOU A NUMBER TO CALL, TO TALK PERSONALLY. TONY SHUMPERT

OH, AND BY THE WAY, THAT PERSON WHO THINKS IMAN WILL BE A TRIVA QUESTION. WHEN HE GETS TO THE NBA LEVEL, YOU CAN GO BACK AND READ YOUR QUOTE AND SAY! I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE YOUNG MAN. ILLINOIS WAS HIGH ON THE LIST UNTIL THEY RECRUITED NONE OF THE 08 CLASS FROM THIS TALENTED STATE. ONE OF THE KIDS HE DIDN'T GET THAT WANTED TO ATTEND ILLINOIS BECAUSE HIS PARENTS ATTENDED THERE NEVER GOT AN OFFER, SO THEY ARE GOING TO OREGON.

Uh exscuse me but if the big ten didn't have any competitive talent exsplain how two years ago they had 2 teams in the final 4, one in the final, and last year one once again in the final. AS FAR AS INCOMING FROSH MY THOUGHTS HAVE ALLWAYS BEEN THEY ALL HAVE TALENT otherwise they would not be selected to play at the colegate level, but talent means one thing they haven't proven anything and with the right coaching staff that talent MIGHT be developed. Ask NBA coach Jerry Slone what he thinks of coach Webbers coaching abuilties. As far as exsposure goes I live in the Seattle area and watch far more Big Ten games than the ACC, and now the Big Ten will have their own network providing even more games accross the country. I also spend 0 time or dollars on the NBA.

mr uncle-

1st why would you not like to play under a coach that is honest staight and asks you to work hard and play hard- go to one of the best schools in the country, have ok to good players all wanting to play better with you, many top 100 players on your team with you as a leader? maybe - as for the big ten- hey eather Ill, Ohio, wis or mich state has been in the finals every hear in the past 8 and there is no team excpet duke with a better record then Ill int he past 4 seasons- so there goes your theory on the big ten being week- it is always stated but in the end they always compete higher- the only place the acc out does the big ten is int the early season challenge- no someone should quite listening to all the bs out there and beleave in the school and look at the real story- they don't like playing team basketball any more or good d- which is what you need to do at Ill and to make it to the pros level-
