If John Calipari leaves Memphis, things could get interesting with Simeon star Derrick Rose

Simeon star Derrick Rose wrapped up his prep career last weekend with a state title and a wave to the crowd. His future seemed settled, he would play in a couple of all-star games this spring and then head off to Memphis.

That could be changing.

Tubby Smith’s resignation at Kentucky could have a significant effect on Rose’s future. Memphis coach John Calipari is considered one of the top candidates for the Kentucky job. Rose signed a National Letter of Intent with Memphis in November. He could ask to be released from his letter of intent if Calipari leaves, but those requests aren’t always granted.

‘‘I feel that if Calipari did leave that the university would show us respect and release Derrick from the letter of intent,’’ said Reggie Rose, who is Derrick’s brother.

According to Reggie Rose, Derrick’s recruiting would be re-opened if Calipari left Memphis.

‘‘We would sit down with the new coach and give him a chance,’’ Rose said. ‘‘You never know, Derrick might buy into the new coach. He really liked it down there.’’

As of Thursday afternoon, the Rose's hadn’t heard anything from Calipari. ‘‘I think if he was considering leaving he would give us a call,’’ Rose said.

It’s too early to speculate about which schools would be in the running for Rose if Calipari left Memphis, but Reggie Rose did let something slip. ‘

‘We may have to get back on the highway and head down to Champaign,’’ Rose said.

Reggie Rose didn’t mention it, but it is also possible that Derrick would follow Calipari to Kentucky.

Rose to Illini would be great, that team was good enough for them all to be offered.

Derrick:

Get the education first. Don't tour the gym......tour the place where you can get an education to last you a life time.
If you injure yourself on the court, you'll always carry the education with you.

Do yourself and your family the biggest favor........GO ILLINI!!!!

Does anyone besides me feel that Reggie Rose is an attention whore and is trying to manipulate Derrick into Reggie's own personal payday? What's this "we" stuff? Derrick's the athlete for crying out loud, and I would be very curious to hear what he truly thinks about the whole thing. He seems like a decent person, so I wish him the best and hope he decides to do what is best for HIM, and not just his hangers-on. After reading this piece and the one about A.J. Mayo's recruitment to USC, I'm getting more and more disgusted with college basketball and how the recruitment process works. It's just covered in slime.

If Derrick somehow ended up with the Illini after all of this, the Illini Nation would still embrace him with open arms. An Illini starting back court of D Rose, D Mac, and Q Wat has me dreaming like you do when you buy that Mega Millions or Powerball ticket. Combine them with a healthy (hopefully) Brian Randle and Shaun Pruitt, and the Illini could quickly be right back atop the Big Ten. Derrick, come on down, Calvin's got a #25 jersey that you can borrow.

Derrick Rose is not going to Illinois. He is going to Memphis. The money has already been paid. No matter what Calapari does, Rose is not going to Illinois. Weber isn't willing to "play the game." He isn't willing to "donate" to the various "Charitable organizations" that control these players. Self makes the "donation" & voila...Wright goes to Kansas. Self makes the "donation" & voila...Collins goes to Kansas. Calipari makes the "donation" & voila...Rose goes to Memphis (a mid-major). So, Illini fans, don't get yourselves too excited about anything you read. Rose is not going to Illinois. Weber isn't willing to "dirty" his hands.

THIS 2007 SIMEON TEAM WAS GOOD AND DERRICK ROSE IS THE BEST IN HIS ERA BUT THE 1985 SIMEON TEAM WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER WITH BEN WILSON AND NICK ANDERSON. SIMEON HAD JUST WON THE CITY AND STATE TITLES IN 1984 AND WITH THE ADDITION OF NICK ANDERSON TO THAT TEAM IT WOULD HAVE EASILY WON THE STATE (REMEMBER THEY WON THE CITY TITLE IN 1985 WITHOUT THE #1 PLAYER IN THE NATION BEN WILSON THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST PUBLIC LEAGUE TEAM TO REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF COACH BOB HAMBRIC.

This is hilarious!! Here we go again. The Rose camp back out to get headlines on nothing but pure speculation. I can't stand Illinois fans but i'm starting to really feel sorry for them with all the teasing they have went through in recruiting this past year. I can't help but laugh when Illini fanatics let their emotions be so easily toyed with. The last minute trip Rose made to Champaign before the inevitable signing with Memphis was just a political move to save face with his home state. I guarantee him and his brother are full of it (and themselves) and had never intended on signing with a Nike school. This is going to make for a great fall from grace story in about 5 years. Maybe Derrick and OJ Mayo can start a tour kindof like And1 because neither will last long in the NBA if they even make it that far.

Stay in Chicago, Derrick! Play in the BIG EAST for DePAUL if Calipari leaves!! The CHI-City is ripe and ready for a top 25 college team (UIUC is not a Chicago team).

Why stop at Champaign? Keep going to Carbondale where they play the best basketball in the state. SIU would kick the butt of the flounding Illini.

I agree with laughing hard, Reggie Rose can live through his brother and remember everyday he wakes up that he was never good enough to make it. D Rose, stay at Memphis, U of I will go no where with Weber except the NIT. I love my Illini more than anyone but the fact of the matter is simple, with mid major talent you are simply a mid major. Thanks Bruce you jerk!

Diddy,

Sorry, but the two most successful programs over the past seven years are Duke & Illinois. Both have excellent programs & both will continue to win. Both went out in the first round this year. But, they will be back. You aren't a real Illinois fan or you would have already known this.

Last year, when Rose, was dancing in circles around U of I, Memphis, and Indiana, I was glad Rose went to Memphis. Who needs a one and done superego. He will only cause problems and his negative headlines off the court wouldn't outweigh the positive headlines on the court. HOWEVER, after watching Durant and Oden destroy college basketball this year I'm salivating at the thought of Rose going to U of I.
Imagine how much better Pruitt would look if he actually had a player who could dribble and shoot the ball. I know we would only get a year but it would be worth it. He might not dominate like Durant but he would be a stud in the Big Ten.
It's fun to dream.

He should sign with the Hoosiers

Sign with the Hoosiers and form the best college backcourt EVER with Eric Gordon. #1 point guard and #1 shooting guard. AMAZING BABY. The chief is dead...... head to Bloomington where we have 5 banners in our house.

Duke Fan:

What "magic tricks" did your boy Coach K pull to get Scheyer from
Bruce's Brother? How did he get a commitment to Livingston? It can't just be about the education can it? People in glass houses....

All of you that think Bruce Weber is clean are smoking from the same crack pipe as Jamar Smith. Your program is as dirty as any major school. Plus, why would he change his mind to the Illini? You choked away your best and ONLY chance at a champianship during my lifetime yesterday. May the Illini return to the bottom of the Big Ten where they belong!

Skip Bayless,

Sorry, Skip, but that dog won't hunt.

Keep dreaming Illini fans! Coach Cal is staying with the Tigers and you can forget Derrick Rose going to Champaign. I am a former Chicagoan living in Memphis and next year will be super. My prediction is the Tigers will be ranked in the top 5 or higher. Not bad for a mid-major! Maybe you would like to been to the Elite Eight two years in a row. The last trip to Memphis by the Illini was not to sweet for the boys in orange and blue. Sweet dreams!

Terry Dahlman, keep racking up weak wins in a weak confrence. Those of us that watched the TN game know the truth. Duke Fan, the last ten years do not count any more the last two have yielded awful results in the tourney for both programs. IU fans, it took two spots on Sampson's staff to secure Gordon, I know its how the game is played, to much risk for a one and done player. As for the likes of the U of I recruits...Bill Cole, Mike Tisdale, everyone remember Nick Smith?

I DONT KNOW THE ROSE FAMILY BUT I THINK IT GREATS HE HAS SOMEONE TO LOOK OUT FOR HIS BEST INTREST RECRUTING CAN TOUGH. IF A LOT OF KIDS HAD GOOD FAMILY OR A GOOD TO HELP THEM MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE THEY CAN STILL LIFE LIKE A KID WHEN GOING THROUGH HIGH SCOOL AND HAVE FUN LIKE REGULAR STEUDENT.I WOULD LOVE TO SEE DERICK ROSE AT ILLINOIS.

Come to Indiana. Why would he ever consider coming to a Mid-Major like Illinois? Who has had no more success that Georgia Tech and Utah in recent years.

Come to Indiana and be a Champion. The Assemble hall with NCAA banners. Not a bunch of thug life, DUI driving, taquilla drinking, teammate injuring punks like Illinois.

Indiana boy if illinois is a mid major then so is indiana, such good education down in the sticks.hey did larry leave that great school?yes he did.....too bad you will end up on probation soon with sampson as coach he has a long list of trouble and the NCAA is watching closely.......

Keep living in the past, no big ten titles, one second round appearance, the glory years will never return with Sampson there. If U of I is a mid major IU belongs in the Mountain WEst for their performances the last ten years. I own you Tim.

Weber isn't going to "Dirty his hands"

What do you mean Weber isn't going to dirty his hands? His hands are FILTHY already! He kept two drunk drivers on his team, one who almost killed another player. A week after Smith's DUI, he was at the end of the bench cheering on the team. Smith had no business being anywhere near that court. Weber isn't as clean as you perceive him to be.

HEY DIDDY;

Weber is not "filthy". If he was Rose would be an Illini!
What he did was realize he had no players left and just panicked!

indiana basketball is the pig's puke! 50000 illegal phone call violations to recruits gets one hired there.

D Rose, if Memphis falls through join your front court buddies at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and enjoy the year.

Diddy,
Do some research before you start spewing your ignorance. IU shared the Big 10 regular season title with UI and Wisconsin in 2002 as well as making it to the championship game against Maryland in 02. IU fans are not "living in the past", IU fans just had to deal with a bad coach for 7 years that couldn't uphold the expectations. We will see who's program prospers in the next 10 years. Looks to me like IU and UI are moving in opposite directions with the Hoosiers looking to add a 6th banner.
tim,
IU has never and will never go on probation. Just because Illinois runs a shady athletics program doesn't mean everyone does. Sampson's only blemish will be the stupid phone call deal which happened at OU like 4 years ago. Illinois wishes their only transgression was as petty. If the NCAA is watching anyone their watching the Illinois football program.

IU Chumps outside of 02 what else do you have??? Nothing, again I own you! Your last banner was 19 years ago, you sound like bears fans talking about 85. Your program is in shambles, great job signing the all public league team from chicago that graduated in 2004. One video coordinator and one recruiting coordinator is all it took to get gordon to go there...prove me wrong! I OWN YOU!!!

Diddy,
You don't own sh_t! Your doing nothing more than upholding the Illini tradition of being a whiner who can't deal with the fact that Illinois will never win a champsionship in your lifetime.
Are you bitter that Jamarcus Ellis and DeAndre Thomas want to play for a real basketball program and a coach that will believe in them?
Also the video coordinator Travis Steele has prior experience on a Big 10 staff while at OSU in 04-05, so his hire wasn't completely out of the ordinary. I'm not sure who you are referring too when you say the recruiting coordinator since all the other assistant coaches were either on Sampson's staff at OU or were hired before Sampson even started hearing from the Gordon's.
GET OVER IT BUDDY. YOU OWN NOTHING!!

There is only one program that currently rivals the one we have at Duke. That is Illinois. No other program even compares as far as victories go (over the past seven years). Sorry. but all of you IU wannebes will have to win some games before you start talking. Otherwise, it is all trash.

Reggie needs to get a life outside of his brother's shadow..first of all..and secondly..if th Rose's had any sense of basketball iq..IU is the spot for guards in the Big10/11..just a thought..and you UofI whiners..it'snot becoming..your better than that..buck it..and again how many banners hang in the "otherAssemblyhaaaal"..more wins..'cept the bigone!!..or did i miss something..?

IU Alums

Take the washouts from the public league who couldnt make it three years ago. IU alums we dominated you 2 of 3 this year. Your banners??? Two decades ago, what have you done for me lately except consistently be in the bottom tier of the big ten. Whining...no whinig here just owning and dominating IU as always. He has tore down the honesty and integrity all of us admired in Coach Knight. He did not need this to secure Damon Bailey, Jay Edwards, Eric Anderson, Calbert Cheney...etc...

"It also helps that Sampson hired two friends of Eric Gordon's father. Sampson hired Ray McCallum, who has known the elder Gordon since high school, and he hired Eric Gordon Sr.'s college coach Jeff Meyer. There is no better way to sweeten the pot than to hire family friends to work on the coaching staff. In addition to McCallum and Meyer, Sampson also hired Gordon's former AAU coach, Travis Steele, to become the Hoosiers video coordinator.

PS I U morons, the Big Ten Title you keep referring to was a four way tie...2002 was awesome!

Laughing Hard I still own you. Look at the bright side, when IU goes on probation you can always root for Texas Tech...

Reggie, please go and join some intramural weekend rec center league so you can get this basketball sickness out of your blood. It's totally fine to enjoy your brother's success. But really dude, get life of your own. Coach Calipari, or the coach of any other college program wouldn't look your way if not for Derrick. "We"? Who are you talking about? Your'e a Hubbard Greyhound, or was. I used to play ball, but I didn't have Derrick Rose talent, so I enjoyed the moment, and moved on to adulthood. So I know what your'e going through. Relax, let Derrick's career play out on its own merit. Adulthood is ok, man, it's not that scary, Grown up, it wont bite! Take up another hobby, like reading. I recommend Raw Recruits.

Hey Reggie, maybe you should hook up with Terry Sawyer, and catch up on the latest happenings with the next great talent of the previous millenium, his son Imari. Terry's getting, and you are going to get what you both deserve, a lesson in what real family support is.which is letting young people experience what life is really about, and then supporting them through each twist and turn, rather than filling their heads with crap until they think they are gods. Derrick will either make it or not with or without your "Guidance". He already has more experience than you, the biggest game you ever played in was getting smashed by King back in the day. Enjoy the ride, but chill with the 1980's Street agent, power broker act. You make yourself and your family look bad, you turn your brother into a piece of meat, and you make Curtis Gates and Bo Agee from Hoop Dreams look like geniuses. Where's your mom or dad or some other respected family member that can put an end to all your peacock proud strutting? Surely you cannot be the patriarch of the clan. Just like getting shot in the forehead by a paper clip and a rubber band does not qualify you for a purple heart, you playing for a second tier blue division team does not make you a recruiting guru.

WHy is tis thread still up? Calipari has said he isn't going anywhere. This was a non-story anyway, now more so!

Guys,
While all of you are bashing Reggie Rose, did any of you ever stop to consider that maybe..just maybe he has his YOUNGER brother's best interest at heart? I know we're talking about a Chicago kid here, but I don't recall anyone freaking out when young Kevin Durant deferred all of this draft questions to his parents. Why is this different? While Reggie was not nearly the talent his brother is, he does have a little experience with this. He is just affording his kid brother a chance to hold onto being a kid a little longer. Given what was done and said about E.Gordon and that punk kid O.J. Mayo (his parents need to dish out a can of whup a_ _) Young Mr. Rose is going to be alright no matter where he ends up. I for one am going to root for him whatever school he ends up at...even if it winds up being IU (gagging)

no one is knocking D. Rose, more power to him for choosing the best program out there for his development. Reggie on the other hand sauntered into the UC last night shaking everyone's hand taking pictures and signing autographs while D. Rose chilled with his girl. He was high fiving the scouts from the Pistons, Supersonics, and Heat while D. Rose quietly walked to his seat and was more intent on saying high to the other players last night. Reggie is trying to relive the past and riding Derrick's coattails. Kind of sad seeing him use his bro for his own self satisfaction. Love and Koshwal were outstanding...Alex Legion looked like a stud last night also.

Hey guys
here is one for you,im pretty sure aron affalo is leaving UCLA,there would definetly be a gaurd spot open for him there and i know ben howland really likes him.west coast and sunshine & california girls..come on over mr. rose? you and kevin Love would make a great team.

go were ever u think you can be succesful

Calipari isn't leaving Mempho and neither is Rose.
Case closed.
