Patrick Z. McGavin's report inside...

Quentin Williford stepped to the free-throw line at Von Steuben with one
thought in mind.

‘‘I knew I had to make a big play — that’s what I was thinking,’’ he said.

The 5-11 guard drilled two free throws with 10.5 seconds remaining to secure
Fenger’s 42-39 upset of the No. 12 Panthers in the first round of the Public
League Tournament on Wednesday.

The Titans (15-8) never looked the part of upstart behind Williford (11
points), Illya Glover (13 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks) and Robert Brown,
who scored five points in six seconds during the fourth quarter for a 39-37
Fenger advantage.

Behind consecutive three-pointers from Deonte Lundeen and Mike Di Nunno, Von
Steuben (20-5) seized a 37-34 advantage. Michael Horton hit a short
turnaround jumper in the lane for the final tie, but the Panthers never
scored again.

Brown split two free throws with 1:53 to play, setting up Williford’s
clinching free throws.

Williford converted 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter to offset the
rest of his teammates who shot 3-for-14 from the line.

Senior forward Michael Faquade led the Panthers with nine points.

‘‘We had guys that stepped up and made plays — Robert Brown, Illya Glover;
this team never quit,’’ Williford said. ‘‘We played like a champion.’’
