Tez to Illinois

The Daily Double is set
Simeon football star Martez Wilson committed to Illinois at a press conference at the South Side school Thursday evening.
It ended the recruitment of the 6-4, 233-pounder who played defensive end, linebacker and wide receiver for the Wolverines.
Wilson is the state's top-rated football prospect while classmate Derrick Rose is Illinois' top-rated basketball player. Rose signed with Memphis in November.

One observation on Illinois landing Wilson after earlier getting a verbal from the nation's top-rated receiver Arrelious Benn of Wasahington D.C. ---

This is the jackpot like the one the Bears hit in 1965 when they drafted Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers

Martez Wilson has made a excellent choice. It is about time elite players of Illinois take pride in their home school. Tez has started a wave that will last for years. The fighting Illini are getting ready for battle. A few more great recruit from Illinois will put them over the hill...

What is U of I doing to get these players all of a sudden? Can we presume that an NCAA investigation and probation will follow?

This is a very intriguing turn of events to say the least. Arrelious Benn was a silent commit to Notre Dame. A visit to lowly Illinois and all of a sudden he de-commits and chooses a school with no football tradition and very little hope of future accolades. What happened on that visit? Martez Wilson was a heavy Notre Dame lean, until he visited the seemingly gold paved streets of Champaign. I wonder if Robert Hughes is next. It will be very interesting to see how all of this plays out in the up coming months. Because where there is smoke, fire will soon surface.

Why such a stupid comment already? Everyone knows Zook can recruit. By the way, whose recruits are playing for the Florida in the national title game ?

The Domers are in a panic. ND is down a few years with Davie yet has come back with Weiss and no one says anything about better classes coming in. Yet, Illinois, who won the Big Ten just 5 years ago, starts to rebuild with better classes under a new coach and something "dirty" HAS to be going on. The accusations and inuendos are just ridiculous. Go back to crying in your beer Domers. You should be good at it. You've had plenty of practice.

t odonnel,

would you like to provide some evidence to your allegations? Surely you didn't just slander UofI without any sustainable information. I know it can be a tough pill to swallow, but some kids do want to attend their state university.

he should have pick the fighting irish.thats a better program

How come when it comes to college sports affrimative action isn't mention...but if an African American student attempts to go to college as a student there is problem of being qualified or not..only if African Americans can help your school have a winning program then they are accepted no matter their poor grades or entrance exams ranking. If more top African Americans went to the historical black colleges to play sports then those schools would be better and no need for affirmative action. Also, this discussion about recruiting violations would not have any merit.

The reason that Martez Wilson gave for committing to Zook, was that he was not an "uptight white coach", so for you Domers, you can infer what you want about Weis from that statement. I wonder how ND started getting those recruits after Willingham was fired.

Bottom line is Zook's team is in the National Championship this year, Weis and the rest of the domers keep getting rocked on National TV by the Big Ten. He can score the Big Recruits as he has proven time and time again. It is east to commit to a program when you can come play immediately. Domers, have fun getting rocked on National TV again by LSU, the only person to knock someone out this year from ND was Tommy Z in his fight against the 50 year old has been. Weis sucks

To all the paranoid "conspiracy theory" and racist bloggers...Zook is a good recruiter but it was Urban Meyer's recognition of Zook that has allowed him to have an excellent recruiting year...On the other side of the coin though, Zook's recruiting has been a case of style over substance, a caste-system of five-star upper class guys and a bunch of low-level guys who rarely panned out, with no middle class. It is that middle class which gives a program consistency and reliability, the five-year guys who provide depth as youngsters and become valuable contributors as juniors and seniors...(Meyer had to play 12 or more red shirt freshmen this year to make up for this fact)...Football isn't all about X's and O's it's about the "Billy's and the Joe's" (those above mentioned "depth" players)...One more thing to the racists and the haters...Your negative comments say more about YOU, than they say about the people and institutions you are racially insulting.

Notre Dame and Weiss suck, but they can't compare to U of M and Carr.

One of the early bloggers wrote that Aurrelious gave a "silent commit" to Notre Dame, then de-committed. What the heck is a silent commit?

Then Martez Wilson committed to Illinois. Robert Hughes is next. Zook is going after Jimmy Claussen next and get him to de-commit and provide backup help for Juice Williams.

btrax;

What are you talking about? You mean the Illini recruits were all waiting for Urban Meyer to give kudos to Zook and his OK before they would sign? Zook was working on them long before Meyer only stated the obvious. Also, 21 of the 22 starters in this year's Florida team were recruited by Zook, so I am not sure what you are referring that Zook only recruits 5 star players or busts. Zook can flat out recruit and like any other coach or team, some recruits will not pan out or will drop out of school but that has nothing to do with recruiting substance or style. If you are talking about coaching ability, that's another topic.

Weis = no talent pro reject who ets drilled by solid coaches in the big games. Why would you want to got there???

Some people can't have it both ways. Some have criticized the Illini for being a "sleeping giant" and not being able to attract better players and now they are criticized when they do attract those players. Seems inconsistent to me.

Illinois has 30 "silent commits" for 2008 football already and 5 "silent commits" for 2008 basketaball. They will announce them when the time is right and when it will have the maximum positive impact.

Merry Christmas to all.

JK you have my ear on the 2008 basaketball recruits, whats up? Yes for you domers, I enjoy watching you get drilled on nationally televised games by the Big Ten. Weis gets out coached by the best every year.

"How come when it comes to college sports affrimative action isn't mention..." What the hell does this have to do with the recruiting process? As a african american and former college athlete and now coach, I am seriously insulted by this comment. While as parents we do try and trick ourselves into believing that this all about education, our kids see the big time programs such as the Michigans, the Domers, The USCS, and The Floridas of the world on national television every single weekend. The larger universities have 3 - 4x the recruiting budgets as the HBCU athletic programs... more so if the program is successful. Now, if affirmative action were the reason for all of this, why does Stanford and Duke suck in everything but basketball? Just once I would like someone to give THE COACH credit for being a dynamic recruiter and crying foul when a good kid makes up his own mind and qualifies academically!!!

You should be insulted as an African American and coach...the reason you are is because African Americans should support the Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Again, I state if the talent was there believe me the networks would televise those games. About the afirimative action comment, again why is there negative connatations concernig minorities when it comes to academics but not sports...if you're good, no matter how DUMB you are... you can get into any major university and the comments then become recruiting violations because one university or another did not get the best black recruit...I forgot I am also an African American athlete and coach. Thus, if that good kid qualifies academically then why not try to uplift the HBC's just think if say the top 100 or so major African American recruits each year played in the HBC's the Norte Dames and USC's would not exsist as they are today...these comments are just something to ponder...I know one thing I will always attempt to steer young males especially African American males to the HBC's.

Um, ND only got beat by 1 big ten team this year. And that team is in the Rose Bowl. I believe they beat the other THREE big 10 teams they played this year.

t odonnel,
your comment is one of the stupidest and most idiotic comments i have ever read...it just makes me angry looking at it...you should delete it while your still unhurt

Classic stuff guys. Illinois fans ragging on Notre Dame. Are you kidding me? Two BCS bowl births and two monster recruiting classes back to back. Ilinois is a joke all around and a pimple on ND's arse. Who would want to go to ND? Oh maybe when you look at the recruiting picture a top player from about 15 different states. Watch out for Jimmy Clausen to Armando Allen. All you ND haters out there will look real silly in 2008-2009.

GO IRISH!!!

Illini get Robert Hughes???
Hah! Just think... What a back field Clausen, Allen and Hughes.
I pray to God that AD Kevin White puts Illinois on the Irish schedule.

"chooses a school with no football tradition"

Illinois has Red Grange, the genesis of the Chicago Bears with George Halas, Dick Butkus, four national titles and 21 conference titles. No football tradition? 'Fraid you're wrong. Illinois has a long football tradition and it's about to get better.

Zook has recruited for two national championship teams-- everyone knows that's his talent. These players will play next year and build a new tradition at Illinois. It's one of the top academic universities in the world, a great campus atmosphere and close to Chicago, one of the world's great cities. Yes, Green Street IS paved with gold. It's a great school. There's no smoke at all. We've shown we can compete with the best in basketball and we'll do it again in football.

Oh, and us Illini fans can hate on Notre Dame or any other team we want to. U of I has 500,000 living alumni. On manpower alone, we can beat up anyone's school. :) There are plenty of us for backup.
