The Chicago State gym was packed with a standing room only crowd of over 3,000. top-ranked Simeon did not disappoint. Derrick Rose scored 22 points and dished out eight assists as the Wolverines defeated Thornton 68-48.
It was the first time Simeon has played in the city since winning the city and state titles last season. They opened the season with a 30-point win over Champaign Central in Kentucky last weekend.
Simeon jumped out to a 21-4 lead.
A basket from Thornton guard Mustapha Farrakhan closed the gap to 38-30 with 4:20 to play in the third quarter, but the Wildcats, playing their third game in three nights, were unable to keep up the intensity. Simeon responded with an 11-3 run.
Farrakhan led Thornton (5-2) with 13 points. Anthony Morris had 11 points and six rebounds and point guard Josh Parker scored eight for the Wildcats.
Simeon forward Bryant Orange may have improved the most since last season’s title run. He did a little bit of everything for the Wolverines, finishing with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
Tim Flowers scored 14 points and Kevin Johnson had ten points and eight rebounds for Simeon (2-0).
The Wolverines of Simeon looked good for their first game played in the Chi since winning state. I don't think teams can match Simeon's experience, athleticism,or intensity for 4 quarters.
