Proviso West 59, Homewood-Flossmoor 56
After sinking the two free throws that sealed Proviso West’s 59-56 win over Homewood-Flossmoor in the first round of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament Wednesday in Hillside, Byron Woods was sitting at his locker with a towel draped over his head and tears in his eyes.
Woods has missed most of the season with a sprained right ankle. In just his second game back, he found his team depending on him, leading by one point with 16.6 seconds to play.
“I just had to make the shot,? Woods said. “There was a lot of pressure on me. My foot doesn’t hurt anymore, but I’m rusty.?
Andrew Fair led the Panthers (8-0) with 16 points and Don Gavin added 10. Woods finished with eight points.
Kevin Dillard led the Vikings (4-6) with 19 points. James Jackson and Supo Sanni each added 10.
