What if ...

If St. Rita had not mounted a late scoring drive at Providence last week, and if Mount Carmel beats Loyola Friday at Gately Stadium, and if St. Rita can beat Brother Rice at home in Week 8 ... we could have had every team in the Catholic Blue finish 2-2 and every team being 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road
Just curious, who would have won the tiebreaker?

PICK FOUR: For ranking the four CCL Blue teams this week in the Super 15, I thought about drawing names out of a hat. Instead, I went with the latest results between the teams

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Three games Friday night will all match 6-0 teams in conference showdowns -- Maine South and Glenbrook South, Lincoln-Way East at Bolingbrook and Antioch at Vernon Hills

FOUR YEARS AND COUNTING: That is the current losing streak for Maine East, which last won a football game in Oct., 2004 against Niles North 22-0 in Week 6 that made them 3-3. Since then, there have been 36 losses in a row for the Blue Demons. The team's other wins in'04 were in Weeks 1 and 2 against Schurz and Round Lake.

A LITTLE OFF THE SUBJECT: The Illinois High School Association's random drug testing starts with this week's boys and girls golf regionals. Girls golf ????
When they start the first state bass fishing tournament, are they going to test the kids? or the fish?
Just wondering.

(with last week's ranking)
1 Maine South (6-0) 1
at No. 10 Glenbrook South on Friday
This week figures to determine the Central Suburban South title. Maine South QB Charlies Goro should get to play four quarters in this one. Glenbrook South has talent all over with a heady QB in Ryan Hopkins and some outstanding receivers and linemen.

2 Naperville North (6-0) 3
hosts West Aurora on Friday
Huskies have to start fine tuning for a showdown with Wheaton Warrenville South in Week 9 and the state playoffs. Overcome a 13-0 deficit against Naperville Central Friday at North Central College.

3 Wheaton Warrenville South (6-0) 4
hosts Wheaton North on Friday
The battle of Wheaton won't be what it could have before injuries to North's junior QB Taylor Graham and RB Mike Trumpy, who sat out last week.

4 Lincoln-Way East (6-0) 5
at No. 5 Bolingbrook on Friday
Griffins toughest test and it's on the road. The key will be stopping Bolingbrook's athletic play makers

5 Bolingbrook (6-0) 6
hosts No. 4 Lincoln-Way E. on Friday
The Raiders have been playing a game of "Leave it to Geever" as their junior QB and a stellar defense took care of Lincoln-Way Central 14-3.

6 Glenbard West (6-0) 10
hosts Downers North on Saturday
This team is a lot more than star lineman Chris Watt. Bryant Venson, Robert Cook and David McCaffrey made big plays against York.

7 Geneva (6-0) 7
at Rochelle on Friday
Hard to find fault with a team that is running away with the Western Sun. Michael Ratay has put himself in the running for Player of the Year.

8 Thornton (6-0) 9
hosts T.F. South on Saturday
Wildcats were winning games early, including one in four OTs. Now Bill Bosel's bunch is dominating. remember, this team was 3-6 a year ago. Now, it is who they'll host when the playoffs start.

9 Bartlett (6-0) 11
at Neuqua Valley on Friday
Hawks continue to rule in the Upstate Eight and exploded for 49 points against Elgin on Friday. This team looks like it can make some people uneasy come playoff time.

10 Glenbrook South (6-0) 13
hosts No. 1 Maine South on Friday
WIll this be the year that someone stops Maine South's domination in the conference? Glenbrook South is looking to avenge two losses for a year ago to the Hawks -- 28-21 in the regular season and 29-12 in the Class 8A playoffs.

11 Hinsdale Central (5-1) 12
hosts York on Saturday
The Red Devils remain on a collision course with Glenbard West for a Week 9 showdown in the West Suburban Silver after smashing Downers Grove North 34-6 on Friday

12 Loyola (5-1) 16
No. 14 Mount Carmel Friday at Gately
Only loss was in the mud at Brother Rice. The Ramblers dominated St. Rita and can clinch a share of the Catholic Blue title with a win over Mount Carmel Friday at Gately. But road teams in the Blue are 1-7 so far this year.

13 St. Rita (5-1) 2
vs. Fenwick on Saturday at Morton
Coach Todd Kuska called his team's 24-0 loss at Loyola "a bump in the road." The Mustangs need to avoid a pothole against a 5-1 Fenwick team that upset St. Rita in 2006 at Morton West.

14 Mount Carmel (4-2) 14
vs. No. 12 Loyola on Fri. at Gately
The Caravan, which bounced back with back-to-back wins against Brother Rice and De La Salle, will have its hands full with an improving Loyola. Coach Frank Lenti's teams seem to get better when the leaves start changing colors and this year is no exception

15 Brother Rice (5-1) 15
hosts Guerin on Friday
Crusaders are a big favorite and a week from its big conference showdown at St. Rita. Brother Rice showed good balance against Providence in a 27-10 win, the most lopsided loss of the season for the Celtics.

16 Carmel (5-1) 17
at St. Joseph on Saturday
Survived a scare against Notre Dame to stay alive in the East Suburban Catholic

17 Cary-Grove (6-0) 18
hosts Crystal Lake South on Friday
The toughest test so far for the Trojans. South's only was was to unbeaten Bartlett

18 Barrington (5-1) 8
hosts Schaumburg on Friday
The Broncos are 1-1 in the Mid-Suburban West, but have to shore up a defense that has given up 68 points against two teams that are 5-7

19 Fremd (5-1) 19
at Palatine on Friday
Conant gave the Vikings a scare, falling 13-7. Palatine, which just knocked off previously unbeaten Barrington 41-35 is next.

20 Joliet Catholic (4-2) 21
at Benet on Saturday
Joliet Catholic's victory over Marist wasn't a surprise. That JCA came out throwing, with QB Matt Ginnetti 13-for-16 after throwing just 24 passes the first five weeks was,

21 Glenbard North (3-3) NR
hosts Glenbard East on Friday
The record doesn't take into account that the three losses are to teams that are now a combined 18-0. To duplicate last year's run to the Class 8A title game, the Panthers have to find a big-play receiver like Matt Ng

22 Lemont (6-0) 22
hosts Hillcrest on Friday
Another showdown looms against Oak Forest for the conference title. Last year, the teams faced off in a 6A semifinal. Could Providence be a first-round opponent in the playoffs?

23 Warren (5-1) 25
hosts Libertyville on Friday
The North Suburban Lake leader, which gave Maine South its only test in Week 2, can't overlook the Wildcats, fresh off an upset win over Stevenson.

24 Oak Forest (6-0) 24
at Tinley Park on Friday
Bengals can't afford to look ahead to a Week 8 showdown at home against Lemont. Oak Forest will face a team that has won every other week and is coming off a loss to Lemont.

25 Hubbard (6-0) NR
vs. Morgan Park Saturday at Gately
The Greyhounds face a Morgan Park team that will be looking to rebound from a 45-43 upset loss against Simeon. Hubbard has played only one team, Hope, that is over .500, but it did knock off Simeon 35-24.

On the bubble: Nazareth, Montini, Sandburg, Antioch, Vernon Hills, Rich East, Huntley, Naperville C., Palatine, Driscoll, Fenwick, Downers South.

DePaul women's coach Doug Bruno landed the post player he coveted when 6-3 Katherine Harry of Columbia, Missouri gave her commitment to play for the Blue Demons begining in 2009.
''There were a lot of reasons I like DePaul," Harry said. ''First of all, the coaching staff. Coach Bruno is an amazing person. It's a great opportunity for me as a player and as a person to be a part of the DePaul program.
''When I visited, I loved Chicago. I have a lot of family in the area. And the girls were so much fun to be around."
Harry led her Rock Bridge team to the Missouri Class 5 (the largest class) state championship last year -- the first basketball state champion, girls of boys, from Columbia.
''The recruiting got to be pretty stressful, but when it winds up with an opportunity like this, it makes it worthwhile," Harry said. ''Now, I have to get ready to try to repeat [as a state champion]."
Harry joins a recruiting class that includes guard Anna Martin of Lexington Kentucky and transfer Jennifer Juergens, a former star at Bishop McNamara.

With DJ Richardson off in Nevada, Peoria Central has been bumped out and the new lineup is:

Glenbrook North vs. Warren, 6:15
De La Salle vs. North Lawndale, 8

The games are February 14 at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena, so you might want to start buttering up your wife/girlfriend/significant other right now (if you want to watch excellent basketball for three hours on Valentine's Day).

In 1913, Richard Nixon, Rosa Parks, Jimmy Hoffa, Woody Hayes, Vince Lombardi, Gerald Ford and Paul "Bear" Bryant were born.

Harriet Tubman, J.P Morgan and King George of Greece died.

The average income was $1,296, bread was six cents a loaf, gas was 12 cents a gallon, a new car cost $490 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 78.

The 16th amendment (income tax) was passed.

And New Trier and Evanston played each other for the first time in football.

The great North Shore rivalry will have its 99th renewal Friday night in Northfield.

Evanston leads the series 53-40-5. But New Trier has won 13 of the last 15.

New Trier-Evanston is more than a decade older than Mount Carmel-St. Rita.

It has been less one-sided (Mount Carmel leads that series 57-27-2). And they have not missed playing a year since it started when Woodrow Wilson was President.

New Trier-Evanston has been played more times than NapervilleNorth-Naperville Central, Lincoln-Way East-Lincoln-Way Central and Hinsdale South-Hinsdale Central combined.

The schools have produced a Heisman Trophy winner, a Super Bowl Bear, a Nobel Prize winner in physics and a who's who of the North Shore in sports, politics and show business.

During football's Week 5 ...

* Aurora Christian¹s Jordan Roberts has a state record 98 (and counting) career touchdown passes and figures to shatter the career passing yardage make against Luther South this weekend. Kudos also for receiver Matt Morse, who missed the first four weeks of the season following a bout with mono, but caught for TD passes including the ones that ties and broke the record.

And Roberts¹ younger brother, a freshman, was quarterbacking the Eagles sophomore teams and looks to be the heir.

* If you thought that there was no defense in Niles North¹s 64-63 win over Niles West, the Vikings were rung up for 75 points by Highland Park Friday.

This time, they didn't win.

* There were a few readers that thought I had lost my mind (again) when I put a 2-2 Joliet Catholic team in the Super 25 and not a 4-0 St. Patrick squad. I guess I can be right some of the time. JCA won 21-0.

* I had a chance Saturday to watch Bartlett against St. Charles North for a half and then I stopped by Conant to watch part of the Fremd-Schaumburg thriller. Both games were a lot more entertaining than my visit to The Cell Saturday night to watch the White Sox.
I've always been a So fan, but there is just no fire. This is the last weekend and they still are in a race for a division title. I don't get it.

Here's a look inside this week's Super 25:

1 Maine South (5-0) 1
Hosts Waukegan on Saturday
There might be a temptation to look ahead to showdown with Glenbrook South, but that would be a mistake. Waukegan has talent.

2 St. Rita (5-0) 2
At No. 16 Loyola on Saturday
The offense needs more consistency and a goof game from QB Larry Garrett. The defense will have to try to slow down quarterback Lucas Ruske, who has been the Ramblers¹ biggest ground gainer.

3 Naperville North (5-0) 3
No. 23 Naperville Central on Friday at North Central
Huskies have won five of the last six meetings to go up 20-18 in the series that is played at North Central College. This will be the first in a series of big tests for the reigning Class 8A state champions. Could Nick Mlady be the school¹s second consecutive Sun-Times Player of the Year?

4 Wheaton Warrenville South (5-0) 4
At West Aurora on Friday
The Tigers are improving every week after overcoming some personnel questions in the preseason. Quarterback Joe Furco and running back Peter Jarrett engineered a rout of Naperville Central.

5 Lincoln-Way East (5-0) 5
At Lockport on Friday
The Knights¹ quarterback Spencer Stanek completed 14-of-15 passes for 216 yards and threw three touchdowns against Lincoln-Way Central.

Leave it to Geever.
Quarterback Brad Geever making all the right moves for the unbeaten Raiders, who can¹t afford to look ahead to their showdown with Lincoln-Way East.

Fullback Drew Fagot (87 yards on 13 carries) and junior quarterback Brandon Beitzel, who threw 120 yards take some of the heat off running back Michael Ratay.

Hosts Palatine on Saturday
Linebackers Alex Smith, Cam Good and Jason Bromm lead a defense that will be tested in a rare Saturday afternoon home game

10 Glenbard West (5-0) 11
At York on Friday
Shades of the Fridge as 6-4, 290-pound offensive lineman Chris Watt scored one of 10 touchdowns, on a run, for the Hilltoppers.

11 Bartlett (5-0) 12
Elgin on Friday at Streamwood
Quarterback Josh Hassenberg was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass from Alex VanNess, but six Hawk turnovers are a concern

At Downers Grove North on Friday
Big day for quarterback John Whitelaw, who scored on runs of 25, 2, 30 and 39 yards and had a 52-yard gain that set up his six-yard TD pass to Rich Zajesk against Oak Park

13 Glenbrook South (5-0) 15
At Niles West on Friday
Interceptions by Peter Mann, Kyle Brubaker and Alex Garvey all turned into touchdowns in a 44-0 romp over Waukegan.

At De La Salle on Friday
Milton Greer an for 193 yards and three touchdown as the Caravan snapped a two-game skid with an exclamation point.

15 Brother Rice (4-1) 8
Hosts Providence on Friday
The Crusaders had the bad fortune of facing an angry Mount Carmel team that was in desperate need of a big win. Tom Gibson was 17-for-26 for 147 yards in the loss.

16 Loyola (4-1) 17
Hosts No. 2 St. Rita on Saturday
Ramblers, who rolled over St. Ignatius, needs a win Saturday to have any chance at the Catholic Blue title.

17 Carmel (4-1) 20
Hosts Notre Dame on Friday
In its last two games after losing at Marist, the Corsairs have outscored its two opponents 99-20. Carmel had had a lot of success against this week¹s for, Notre Dame, in Mundelein.

Kyle Leibforth had an interception return for a touchdown as the Trojans smashed Jacobs 41-0.

This isn't a Public-Private debate, but picking out which teams to rank in the Catholic League Blue and East Suburban Catholic has gotten a lot tougher
I don't remember every doing this before, but this week, I have all five Catholic League Blue teams in this week's top 20.
In the ESCC, I'm going with the two teams I had the highest in the preseason, Carmel and Joliet Catholic.
And in my bubble teams on the outside, I have unbeaten St. Patrick, which hosts Joliet Catholic on Friday at Hanson, Nazareth, which is 3-1 and just knocked off Marist, and Marist, which beat Carmel in Week 3.

Stevenson, which started 0-2, losing to Loyola and Glenbrook South, is right there with the four 2-2 teams in the rankings -- Mount Carmel, Glenbard North, Joliet Catholic and Morgan Park.

I got a chance to watch the Mount Carmel-St. Rita game that I recorded Friday night. I can't recall a field that looked better on television for a high school game. Fred Weintraub's team and ME-TV did a great job.
And St. Rita looked almost as good an the small screen as it did from the sideline.

I heard that cars on Western Avenue were backed up south of 95th Street before the game -- that's more than two miles.
Having the other nearby schools, Brother Rice, Marist and St. Laurence, all playing on Saturday didn't hurt

Dynamic duo: Look for the running back tandem of Josh Hodur and sophomore Steve Fiorella for St. Laurence. Both are products of South Side power St. Bede.

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENTS: Look for Fenwick to move into the Catholic League Blue next fall to make it a six-team conference.

*The Aurora Beacon News reports that the Upstate Eight will have two six-team divisions with the adition of Metea Valley, which will play in the Upstate Eight division with East Aurora, Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley St. Charles East and St, Charles North. The Upstate Eight North division will have Barlett, Elgin, Lake Park, Larkin, South Elgin and Streamwood.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Feniwck will host night games against St. Ignatius Oct. 3 and Morton West and Oct. 24 at Toyota Park against De La Salle.
The game at Toyota Park is intersting because there has been talk about games that are part of the Herbstreit Series that St. Rita played at in Cincinnati expanding to Chicago. The 20,000-seat venue would be a perfect site.

Here's this week's rankings

1 Maine South (4-0) 1
At Evanston on Friday
The offense is the best I've seen with QB Charlie Goro picking defenses apart and RB Matt Perez finding holes. Last week, the hawks outscored Glenbrook North (which beat them last season) and Maine East by a combined score of 107-7.

2 St. Rita (4-0) 2
At No.18 Providence on Friday
There was a temptation to elevate the Mustangs after a magnificent performance against Mount Carmel. Marty Hopkins and Dave Marciano lead an underrated defense. The offensive line is young, but playing extremely well. Mustangs; running back Jahwon Akui has had his name spelled incorrectly as Johwon

3 Naperville North (4-0) 3
Hosts No. 23 Glenbard North on Friday
The stakes are raised for the Huskies and RB Nick Malady in a rematch of last year's Class 8A title game.

4 Wheaton Warrenville South (4-0) 4
At No.16 Naperville Central on Friday
"Golden Toe" Nick Immekus delivers a game-winning 45-yard field goal to beat Glenbard North.

5 Lincoln-Way East (4-0) 5
Hosts No. 14 Lincoln-Way Central Friday
Two shutouts in a row and a 93-yard TD on a kickoff return for Eric Sawicki in a SouthWest Suburban opener.

6 Bolingbrook (4-0) 6
Hosts Joliet on Friday
Junior achievement for QB Brad Geever and RB Jamel Martin. Senior DL Roosevelt Holliday continues to come up huge.

7 Geneva (4-0) 7
Hosts Sycamore on Friday
Michael Ratay carried 44 times against Glenbard South, which is a pace that could burn him out. Cry Hofstetter is a monster on defense

8 Brother Rice (4-0) 8
No.19 Mount Carmel Friday at Gately
Two weeks in a row at Gately for QB Tom Gibson and the Crusaders, who face a Mount Carmel team trying to avoid three consecutive losses for the first time in more than 20 years.

9 Barrington (4-0) 9
At Hoffman Estates on Friday
the Broncos continue to roll behind quarterback Cody Seeger. A showdown with Fremd should decide the Mid-Suburban West.

10 Thornton (4-0) 12
At Thornwood on Saturday
Quarterback Darren Jones is the real deal for coach Bill Mosel, who has produced more NFL players than any other coach in Illinois

11 Glenbard West (4-0) 13
Hosts Addison Trail on Saturday
Three running touchdowns for Robert Cook as Hilltoppers stop surprising Proviso West, looking for its first state playoff berth

12 Bartlett (4-0) 14
Hosts St. Charles North on Saturday
A winning combination for the Hawks -- QB Josh Hasenberg to receiver Alex VanNess.

13 Hinsdale Central (3-1) 16
Hosts Oak Park on Friday
Quarterback John Whitelaw & Co. continue to roll. Mike Rogowski had a defensive touchdown in a 43-14 victory over Hinsdale South for the Doings Cup.

14 Lincoln-Way Central 4-0 18
At No. 5 Lincoln-Way East on Friday
Were the Knights looking ahead when they fell behind 10-0 to Stagg before rallying for a 28-16 victory?

15 Glenbrook South (4-0) 23
Hosts Waukegan on Friday
QB Ryan Hopkins is making believers. A showdown against Maine South, where Hopkins' father coached two state championship teams, could determine the Central Suburban South.

16 Naperville Central (4-0) 24
Hosts No. 4 Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday
Quarterback Nick Linne, who threw for 100 yards, called Friday's 28-13 victory over Wheaton North "a statement game." What would he call a Week 5 win over Wh
