Two-time national prep cross country champ and Sandburg grad Lukas Verzbicas has decided to shift his focus from distance running to triathlons.

Verzbicas on Thursday posted a link on his Facebook page to a USA Triathlon news release announcing his decision to leave the University of Oregon and his running career to chase his Olympic triathlon dream.

"Thank you to the University of Oregon, coaches and teammates for the unmatched experience and support," Verzbicas wrote on his Facebook page. "I wish you nothing but the best of luck."

Verzbicas, who won the International Triathlon Union Junior World Championships in Beijing in September, will move to Colorado Springs, Colo., for his triathlon training.

Chicago-area athletes dominated the USA Triathlon Junior Youth Championship last weekend in Chula Vista, Calif.

Sandburg grad and Oregon track recruit Lukas Verzbicas won what will be his last triathlon on U.S. soil for the foreseeable future, winning the male title in 55 minutes, 4 seconds. Ben Kanute of Geneva was second in 56:19. After competing in the junior world championship next month in China, Verzbicas plans to focus on running.

Another Geneva athlete, Kelly Whitley, won the junior female triathlon title in 1:02:01.

Verzbicas also competed in the relay event and was involved in a bike collision that left him with an injury that required 13 stitches.
