Football: August 2011 Archives

The Public League football master schedule is out and one of the odder matchups comes early in the season.

That would be a nonconference matchup between Tilden and Western Big Six power Rock Island at Gately Stadium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Yes, you read that right: the game is on a Tuesday. It'll be the season opener for Tilden, which has just eight games scheduled, but it'll be the second game for Rock Island. The Rocks open at Geneva on Friday, Aug. 26 and complete a whirlwind week by playing their third game of the season at Pekin on Friday, Sept. 2.

The other Western Big Six schools play nonconference games in Week 9, but apparently Rock Island couldn't find an opponent for that weekend and opted for an extra game in Week 2.

The highly-anticipated Week 1 showdown between neighborhood rivals Wheaton Warrenville South and Glenbard West will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

The game, which will be hosted by WW South, was originally scheduled for Friday night, Aug. 26. It's been moved to an 11 a.m. kickoff on Sunday, Aug. 28. It's the second straight year the Tigers will play on national TV, and they can only hope this time will be as successful as last year's 44-7 romp past Maine South in Week 2.
