Mother Jones video

#RomneyEncore is trending on Twitter tonight following a leaked video earlier today featuring Mitt Romney telling a group of wealthy donors at a private fund-raiser earlier this year that 47 percent of Americans take government hand-outs.

A series of videos from that same event were posted on Mother Jones' Web site earlier today. The post has been Tweeted more than 14,000 times.

It's prompted thousands of Tweets blasting Romney.
A few examples:
These two from NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof:
"What will Romney do for an encore? Condemn people who don't save enough for a weekend house."
"The problem with American voters is they're too stressed. They don't spend enough time on their yachts." #RomneyEncore

Others:
Ask not what your country can do for you... but what your country can do for Mitt Romney. #RomneyEncore

"I'm having this great contest for voters -- one will fly on my airplane with me. Of course, they'll be strapped to the roof." #RomneyEncore

Here is an excerpt of Romney's remarks that is ruffling the most feathers.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what...These are people who pay no income tax.

Not sure what the uproar is about, he just spoke the truth. Can anyone out there prove him wrong?

What truth did he speak exactly? Half of the people in that %47 are elderly, some are the working poor. So where was he speaking the truth? Or do you now want seniors to pay federal income taxes on their social security benefits?

What about the entitlements that Mitt Romney took while at the helm of Bain Capital?

Maybe he could've used a better choice of words, but the message is substantially spot-on.

And I'm not even going to vote for him, though I 'm not voting Obama either.

The only ones who should be offended are those who've been living on the government teat for years/decades, and who are too lazy to look for work.

So Romney conceded 47% of the vote. Big deal.

This truth apparently will bother the 47% of "Obama Dependents" who've grown accustom to government redistributing wealth into their pockets for doing nothing, and now angered by the criticism/remark about their source of income.

It's doubtful the Romney statement will bother a person still fortunate to work in these economic times as much as the "shakedown" that government does to his/her paycheck through taxation and other forms of extortion.

The problem with these commentors and with Romney is that they have lied to themselves for so long that they believe their own lies! They believe that there could be a United States where 47% of the people who don't pay taxes aren't the rich ones with loop holes. I understand Romney's delusion. He's insolated by his wealth and his status. What I don't understand is the working-class whites who pull themselves up to the table where this Bull is being served, ladle it into their mouths while they themselves can't pay their bills, and benefit from the new healthcare laws that greatly reduced their cobra bills when they too lost their jobs because Mitt and his friends sent them overseas. They are the reason that politicians like Mitt stand flat-footed and spout their delusions at all of our expense.

He speaks the truth. This is what's wrong with America. We need to explain to 47% of society that you cannot depend on the govt. for everything. Try working for a living like the rest of us.

1) According to the department of commerce, Persons under 18 years old make up 23.7% of the population, of that persons under 5 make up 6.5% of the population. See http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html Of course, many of these children do not make any money and thus do not pay taxes. Some, like vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan whose father passed away when he was young, might be sucking from the government teet because of social security survivor benefits.
2) Also according to the department of commerce,13.3% of the population was 65 or older in 2011. See http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html Because of baby boomers, it is probably slightly larger this year.
3) According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 4.5% of the population has a serious mental illness. See http://www.nimh.nih.gov/statistics/SMI_AASR.shtml
4) According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, up to 3% of the population is mentally retarded. See http://www.aafp.org/afp/2000/0215/p1059.html
5) I haven't looked it up, but I am certainly aware of physically disabled people who are blind, deaf, had a brain injury, have limited mobility, have either no or only limited use of their hands, arms or legs, etc.
6) In one of President Reagan's speeches, he called out the unfairness of millionaires who pay nothing in taxes or who pay less of a percentage in taxes than a bus driver. It has even been alleged that Mitt Romney didn't pay any taxes for several years prior to 2010. His word isn't good enough, lets see his "long form".
Given the above percentages, to make any sort of significant increase in the percentages of people paying taxes, it looks like Romney will want children, grandparents, mentally ill and physically disabled to work very hard to make sure they earn enough money so they have to pay taxes. There's no reason your kids can't work when they are young. It would make the US more competitive with third world nations.

And how much do you pay in taxes, Mr. Romney. 13%? I'm retired and I pay a lot more than that on my pension, plus I pay extra so I don't get slapped by the government in April. Of course, we'll never know about your tax burden, because you seem to think that you can run for office and not do what other candidates have done for years. I hope you studied the French Revolution while in your early years at Harvard, because your attitude and body language are right in line with the arrogant French aristocrats who also thought they didn't have to worry about the great unwashed of that time.

I am of the 47% and I have a job and pay taxes. I don't look for handouts or expect housing (nor have I ever missed a mortgage payment). Romney's vast generalization is one of the more offensive things I have heard him say.

So KJ is one of the 47%, has a job and pays taxes? Duh! Romney was talking about the 47% who, according to the IRS pay NO ncome taxes, working or not. Don't know what percentage also get the "reverse income tax" Earned Income Credit. Mitt simply spoke the truth. And the Libs can't HANDLE the truth! Everybody who is privileged to live in the great land should pay SOMETHING. Talk about fair!

It's doubtful the Romney statement will bother a person still fortunate to work in these economic times as much as the "shakedown" that government does to his/her paycheck through taxation and other forms of extortion.

Wrong - I am still fortunate to work in these economic times and have been for the last 30+ years. His statement is pure horse sh*t.
Look, if you don't want to pay taxes then pack up and LEAVE. I hear greedy people do well in China. Don't forget to write!!
