Hard drive update, plus baby naming

We have a name: Gilbert for a boy or Gillian for a girl.

Actually, a name might not be enough. We might actually have to give our firstborn child to Gillware, the data recovery specialists in Madison, WI who rescued EVERYTHING off my damaged hard drive.

(Special note to Erin: I know sarcasm is not always easy to catch in written form, so, yes, I am SERIOUSLY comparing my broken computer to the priceless life of a child. Because that is the kind of person I am.)

R. seems to believe that just paying them the $700 (!) is enough, but, really, can something like this be rewarded in mere currency? We're talking about karma here.

Gilbert? Seriously? When I think of "Gilbert" all I can think of is that horribly obnoxious Gilbert Godfrey. I would not mess with karma by giving my child such an unfortunate name.

What's that conversation like when little Gilbert comes home for the 7th time all beaten up? "Yes son, I'm sorry we gave you such a horrible name. We knew it would get you beaten up daily, but we just HAD to honor the computer data recovery company that saved my book." How about using Gilbert for your next cat?

Gillian, however, is adorable.

And congrats on the full recovery of your computer data! You must be so relieved!

I knew a guy named Gilbert. He insisted on being called Gil. He ended up being a real jerk. Possibly from all of the torment he must've endured as a child.

Seriously. Reconsider!

Gillian is a great name though.

Did you decide what the babys last name will be? If your name is still Pickett after getting married, then your husbands name must be different.

PICKETT replies: Yes, the baby will have my husband's last name. It's a little odd for me to think about being the only person in our house with a different name, but the other options (hyphen, blend, etc.) seemed too fussy. I'm sure there will be times -- particularly controversial columns, for example -- when the kid will be glad not to have the same name as me.
