Last week, Oprah announced her latest book club selection -- Uwem Akpan's debut collection of short stories, Say You're One Of Them -- on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"This is a first for me because each one of these five stories really just left me gasping," she said in brief remarks toward the end of her show. "Just an incredible book."

Akpan, 38, is a native of Nigeria and an ordained Jesuit priest who in 2006 received a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Michigan.

He told Reuters he's not working on another book right now because he's busy with church work.

"I have permission to write, but I do not need an imprimatur from the church -- that is more for people who are writing about theology and philosophy. They see that I am writing fiction and assume it is made up," he said.

"Don't forget that Jesus was a priest and a poet."

Oprah Winfrey will announce her latest book club pick next Friday -- Sept. 19 -- the first since the last selection of Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth."

Winfrey sent an e-mail to book club readers about the new pick saying, "Once you start it, you won't want to put it down! Until then, it's a great time to reflect on the lessons you've learned from "A New Earth" -- and how you'll continue to apply them to your everyday life."

Tolle's book has sold millions of copies and is believed to be Winfrey's most popular pick.

Born in what she calls the ghetto, she survived cases of abuse her entire life and will use her spot on the show to help heal.

And probably the one most excited Oprah's on the other end of the phone.

Even for an Oprah Winfrey book pick, A New Earth has been a sensation.

About 3.5 million copies of Eckhart Tolle’s spiritual self-help guide have been shipped since Winfrey announced her selection four weeks ago, according to the Associated Press. The book has topped the best seller list on virtually from the moment Winfrey’s choice was revealed and is the fastest-selling pick ever at Barnes & Noble, Inc., according to a statement issued Thursday by Winfrey.
