Sam Perry, first publicly identified by the Chicago Sun-Times as the mystery man who lent his shoulder to a weepy Oprah Winfrey Tuesday, will appear on the TV superstar's show Friday.

A Harpo representative declined to give further details about Perry's appearance.

Suntimes.com broke the news today that Perry, of Menlo Park, Calif., is the man in a widely circulated image with Oprah.

A neighbor of Perry said Perry and his wife were Obama supporters, at one point hanging a large Obama banner off a storage unit that was holding construction equipment in their driveway during a recent remodeling project.

Perry is apparently an Obama volunteer, listed as the communications director for Silicon Valley for Obama.

Giselle Schmitz, regional field director for the Obama campaign, described Perry as "a great guy" and "tremendous asset to the organization."

"He's a great, great supporter," she said. "He did a ton of work on the campaign."

Schmitz said she and other Obama supporters watching the results Tuesday night saw Perry and instantly recognized him.

"We all saw him right away," she said. "It was great."

Oprah dubbed Perry "Mr. Man" on Wednesday's show, thanking him for the support.

"Friends called me around the country and said, 'Who was with you?' I said, 'I don't know him, but he was very nice to me,'" Oprah says. "At one point I was just sobbing on his shoulder, mascara everywhere."

"Thank you, Mr. Man, for letting me cry on your shoulder."

I was disturbed to learn the man Oprah was leaning and weeping on was a stranger. I'm sure he was starstuck and flattered when she asked. But, I would bet he was too absorbed with the most famous woman in the world leaning on his shoulder to enjoy the historic moment for himself.

I volunteered at the Silicon Valley Office, too! At first I did it just to be able to tell my children (now 6 & 8 y/o)and grandchildren that I had done it. But it was truly a tremendous experience. I got to talk to people all over the country. Will history remember what a long shot President Obama was?
I'll look for you around Menlo Park, Sam, and thank you, Giselle, for your almost daily e-mail updates to all of us. It took a nation of villages to make this happen and I am so happy and so proud. ...Sonya (sljohnson@aol.com)

I WAS SO VERY MUCH IMPRESSED WITH THE COMMENTS FROM WILL SMITH ON TODAY'S SHOW (11/6/08) I WANTED TO TAPE IT SO I COULD GIVE IT TO MY CHILDREN. HIS PHILOSOPHYS ARE THE GREATEST. I THOUGHT THE SHOW WAS GOING TO AIR AGAIN THAT NIGHT BUT IT DIDN'T IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET A TRANSCRIPT, VIDEO ETC ANYTHING THAT WOULD CONTAIN HIS COMMENTS ON THAT SHOW?

Oh,I don't think Sam's anywhere like Joe the Plumber. This man doesn't seem to want too much attention. CNN has been calling him for an interview since weds and he hasn't respond. He would appear on Oprah though, well, he was, after all, the "shoulder to cry on."

I find it condescending for Oprah to use any person as her leaning post! That is what Stedman is for...where was he??

We are all so proud of President Obama! We personally saw our entire community come together to canvas, make telephone calls, or volunteer in ways never seen before in our lifetimes. We especially want to thank Oprah for working so tirelessly to help get the vote out.

Now lets get to work supporting our new President and doing what he asks of us to improve our country.

Wow! Now all of us who worked in the SV for Obama office ( in Palo Alto) are five degrees of separation from Oprah! Woohoo! Congratulations on your moment; and thanks for all the hard work you did. This is an honor well-deserved!

I know Sam! That makes me one degree of separation from Oprah, two from Obama!

Sam is a very good guy here in Silicon Valley. He doesn't need the 15 minutes and, believe me, he's a superior media presence than Joe the Whatsit.

Sam, your 15 minutes start.... now. Let's hope they are better than Joe the Plumber's.
