With finals out of the way the Wildcats can concentrate on trying to win only the second bowl game in program history Jan. 1 at the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas.
The Wildcats practiced indoors Saturday in Evanston and coach Pat Fitzgerald said he was pleased with quarterbacks Evan Watkins and Kain Colter, but said that some other facets of the team were "a little rusty." Finals week will do that to you, I guess.
After nearly every game in November, minus the Iowa victory Nov. 13, Fitzgerald has said how frustrated he is at missed tackles and that the defense must improve at that most basic aspect of football if the team is to be successful. But after Saturday's practice, Fitzgerald seemed like the defense was pointed in the right direction.
"It was good to get some guys back today. We had seven guys on defense not practice. We were pretty beat up. What happened to us at the end of the [season] was an anomaly."
To liven the mood, Fitzgerald has scheduled a trip Monday night to the Bulls game at the United Center and then an outing to a Blackhawks game next week Sunday.
