Concealed carry firearms laws by state

Illinois is the only state that does not allow some form of concealed weapons permit. Most states issue permits if the gun owner completes a specific set of requirements while some states are more limited in who can have a permit. Four states do not require a permit to carry a concealed firearm. See which laws apply to each state:

PERMIT-ISSUE:

A gun owner can be granted a permit upon meeting certain requirements

PERMIT-LIMITED:

A state has a much broader discretion as to who can have a concealed firearm permit

NO PERMIT REQUIRED:

Any gun owner can carry concealed firearms

CONCEALED CARRY NOT ALLOWED

The more restrictive states (e.g. permit limited) have some of the highest number of murder cities (e.g. Chicago, NYC, Camden NJ, LA, etc). The more you restrict guns to law abiding citizens, the more the criminal thugs control the streets.

THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS; SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED,GOD BLESS THOSE,FOUNDING FATHERS.

It is about time. All the thugs in those high crime neighborhoods have guns. It was just the law abiding citizens that didn't have guns.

I'm a NRA Certified Pistol Instuctor here in Florida. In order to get your CCP, you have to take a gun safety/proficiency course given by a Certified Instructor (like me) which includes live fire, and you obviously have to pass a Homeland Security background check along with a state background check. If you don't pass these rather stringent requirements, no Concealed Carry Permit for you. The state collects a tax, of course. A lot of people don't understand this.

It still blows my mind that that the most crime-ridden areas ban guns by law abiding citizens, like Melissa says. It's almost as if the pols want to keep the most vunerable well, vunerable. Huh?

I would like to add that Florida does issue permits to nonresidents who meet their criteria. Florida's permit is a good one to have even if you don't live in Florida, as many states honor it. Other good nonresident permits to acquire are Utah and Arizona.

The anti-gun crowd like Bob Costas say concealed carry will cause shootings if someone's shoe gets stepped on in a line.

That is such brainwashing. If that were true, every time it happened NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, the Tribune, Sun-Times and Rahm would be screaming to high heaven about it.

The fact is it doesn't happen. Every other state in the union has some form of concealed carry. If it happened....those above would make sure you heard about it 24/7.

Chicago has the highest murder rate with a huge number of unsolved killings and shootings. Police are underfunded and tens of minutes away when seconds matter.

Citizens have a constitional right to protect themselves. It saves lives. It reduces crime.

Lastly, if all the people on the plane that went down in Shanksville, PA in 09/11/01 were wired like Bob Costas who stated on television, if he were on that flight he'd be cowering on the floor, that plane would have hit it's target.

well its about time too carry hand guns, we all have right too protect ourselfs just don't shoot the MAFIA. or the DRUG dealers please or people shall die who kill our mafia friends....

Great Opinion!!! Finally a Court with HUGH TESTICLES AND williness to follow the Constitution; Our Forefathers are, I am sure dancing and drinking hot rum!!
We still have a few judges that are not sheep. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND
SEMPER FI!!! (An old WWII & Korea) Marine.....OOOOOh RAH

It's great to see the spot of "red" on this map will disappear within the next 180 days. Illinois will finally join the rest of the nation in recognizing the 2nd amendment.

Thanks for taking this opportunity to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and I take pleasure in learning about this topic. If possible, as you gain information, please add to this blog with new information. I have found it extremely useful.

You can't compare CHICAGO with other STATES, and it's the per capita that is the right metric.

Good comment Melissa... Most people have this "fear" and they really don't know why.. It is our constitutional right to defend ourselves against vicious attacks and our right to protect OURSELVES and OUR FAMILY... Somehow,,,,, Illinois thinks that they either should do it for us, or just let us get MOWED DOWN by some WHACKO KILLER...,,,, well,,, they're SADLY MISTAKEN....

The Sun Times left out an important part of the description for the "light green" states on their map. Those states are not "can issue" they are "shall issue": if you meet the legal criteria --- clean record, necessary training, reasonable licensing fee paid --- the state SHALL issue you a permit. Not "may, if we feel like it" or "perhaps, if you know the right people" but SHALL. Same as a driver's license, with no need to "prove" a need for one.

41 states are now "shall issue" or require no permit at all. And the sky continues to refuse to fall! Violent crime continues to drop, murders are at record low levels, and yet there are far more guns "on the streets" than ever before in the entire history of the US.

Illinois is being brought --- kicking and screaming like a spoiled child --- into the 21st century and the whole Bill of Rights.

Do you really believe what you just said? That is why we have the problems we do because of uneducated people like you.

According to John Lott, since 1955 except for one, every mass shooting has been done in "Gun Free" zones.

The person who did the shooting at the Colorado movie theater
had a choice of more than 6 movie theaters. All of the theaters were showing the same
Batman movie. Of these other theaters, one had a much larger screen, a few were bigger and a couple were much nicer. Also, the theater he picked was the furthest from where he lived.

What was the difference?
The one he chose was a "Gun Free" theater. It seems to be an important fact that the media left out.

And PLEASE don't anybody respond by saying that maybe the media didn't know. If anyone thinks that, I would argue that person needs to do some REAL journalistic info search. That's if anyone wants to make an informed decision on what the facts are.

“If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.”

@ comparing apples and oranges . . . Is the per capita homicide rate you listed total homicides or homicides committed with firearms?

What you fail to consider is that those cities with high gun violence rates suffer from that violence due to firearms that were purchased or acquired outside the state where the crime was committed. Taking your Chicago example, the majority of guns used in homicides in Chicago were purchased in states with extremely lax gun laws (such as Alabama and Mississippi). So your citation to high crime rates in cities within states with very stringent gun laws doesn't make any sense. It isn't because criminals know law-abiding citizens don't have guns and decide to commit crimes, its because these states are flooded with guns purchased or obtained (either legally or illegally) from outside the state, specifically in states that hardly have a background check requirement.

Consider more than just the first layer of the issue, I assure you there is far more there than meets your eye as you gaze at Megyn Kelly on Fox News.
