The Chicago City Council housing committee today forwarded Ald. Eugene Schulter's substitute ordinance for acquiring property in the the 4800 block of Western in Lincoln Square to the city council for approval.

If approved, substitute ordinance would allow the city to acquire property on that block only if owners voluntarily agree to sell. The previous ordinance would have allowed the city to use its eminent domain power to take the property.

On the Misguided Attempts to Make Miracles

When Dorothy Gale fell out of Kansas, a “Miracle” occurred. Without a second’s thought to the appropriateness of its landing spot, her house just fell. Miraculously, it solved a great ill in Munchkin Land, and, against all odds, liberated the oppressed. Ms. Gale, however, kept enough sense about her to recognize that this was no miracle, but rather nothing more than a freak accident with positive consequences.

Breaking news in Lincoln Square:

Bowing to pressure following a community protest and the Sun-Times coverage of his redevelopment plans for the Lincoln Square business district, Alderman Gene Schulter (47th Ward) pulled an ordinance that would have allowed the city to use its eminent domain powers to gobble up the 4800 block of Western.

Schulter's office sent out this statement"

Lincoln Square neighbors — at least the ones who have organized under the banner "Save Lincoln Square — are planning a protest before Wednesday's City Council meeting at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle.

Ald. Eugene Schulter plans to forward an ordinance that would allow the city to acquire the 4800 block of Western for private development. They plan to meet at 9 a.m. for the 10 a.m. meeting to convince aldermen to vote against the so-called land acquisition list.
