Peace and Grace to all that come across this, I know that there is alot of anger and frustration within the streets of America as a whole not just in the Chicago area. I believe that we as people are lacking Jesus Christ in our lives. What happen to the "good old days" when we use to be corrected and disciplined by our parents, family, and neighbors. I believe that there is a lack of guidance in the homes, whether it be that the (positive) Father figure is missing, or that your youth is receiving the wrong message from other knukleheads on the block, TV, and/or RAP MUSIC. I believe that some not all parents arent standing strong in the Lord Jesus, and have fled away from the church and the teachings of the Holy Bible. I was once a knucklehead too, out here living the "street life". Yea I thought it was cool to want to be like Tupac and Biggie. I was blessed enough to find the Lord Jesus at the age of 26 after getting into an serious altercation , but now only by the GRACE and MERCY of God I am still here and being taught by Godly men who challenge me, hold me accountable, and teach me how to live life the way that Christ wants us to live it, not the way the world teaches us.... in closing we have to ask ourselves, do we really care? We have to demand more from ourselves first and then demand more help from goverment officials, whether it be funding for programs that give our youth positive things to do. What ever happened to Cease Fire, which had a good impact? May the Grace of the Lord be with us all.

Pay the fellows in the hood to learn. Send each one to school rather than to jail. Create an enviorment of caring and understanding. Not superiority. Your first thought is this will cost to much. Well....check this out...how much does it cost to jail an indivdual. We need people to lead...not just chatter their teeth.

I was once a product of my surroundings. I was "Hanging, Banging & Slanging". There was one common denominator that we shared, No skills or sense of self-worth. I was lucky that my father taught me building trades and I was a bit more motivated then most of my cohorts. Yet most of these youth need a sense of self worth which a skilled job could provide.
Obviously this may be over-simplifying the over all picture, but a large portion of these kids want to feel "needed".

Stop the Ghetto Culture.

I beleive we need to hire glenn"cowboy' sanderson, to help clean-up what histortically has been a cesspool of violence for far too many years. I also think jerry 'GOLDIE' CLAY, for assistant state's attorney. to arrest each and every dumb-as gang-banger in the city, and as punishment make them all read book's and learn their ABC'S......DUHHHHHH, IT AIN'T THE WaTER............. PS: iceberg of 53rd........................................................................................send all e-mails to willwork@yahoo.com

Let the police do their JOB! Let them beat a few crimminals, that way they get the fear back into them, as well as they start talking so others can get caught. The liberals made society this way, it wasnt like this in the 70's but you morons had the bright idea were all created equal....newsflash we AREN't!!!

Well instead of punishing them and putting them in jail make them do community service. For example in the area where they live if its messy make them clean it up. If there are gang signs have them paint the walls. To stop the crimes of the chicago you need people, the way you get people to help you out is if they trust you. These days you can't trust nobody. Start a club Crime Stopers in chicago every block has few people that are willing to stop the crime, have meetings with these people show them that you care. Pass a new law every house in chicago has to have at least 4 cameras on each house at least that are working properly. Two cameras on the front of the house and 2 in the back of the house or they can have more(it depends where they live and how bad the crime is).

The bleeding-heart liberals are right that we should all be equal in treatment by the government, but that government has to work hard at protecting us from the evil among us, and the liberals have worked hard at denying the reality of evil, and fighting against our efforts to defend ourselves. The gangsters may shout, no justice, no peace, but the rest of us don't have to just shut up and let them kill us. If it is OK for them to rob, rape and murder us, why is it not OK for us to defend ourselves against them? We have the right to have police, courts and jails because we have the right to defend ourselves against violent criminal attack. We should also have the right to keep and bear arms, because there will not always be a policeperson right there, even in the most enthusiastic totalitarian state; we do not have that right in Chicago; how can it be any surprise that where guns have been outlawed, the outlaws don't even need guns (they can kill us with knives or whatever, when we are unarmed) but they have them anyway?

I haven't been to Chicago since I was on the Breakfast Club in 1955; but I'm going to be bold enough to make an assumption that the police are already doing their job about as well as possible - at least, the basic job of catching the bad people, which is mostly what we have a right to expect of them. Some years ago I happened to meet an old high school friend, and in the course of the conversation he happened to mention that he was in the Secret Service. He further volunteered that he had been on the police force in DC, but he got tired of arresting people and watching the judge let them go free. People who live as career criminals - the ones who cause most of the trouble - have to become career jailbirds (maybe not permanent jailbirds, like 3 strikes and you are out forever, but enough time to give the rest of us some peace). We should put a lot of work into destroying the culture of hatred and fear, restoring the ancient virtue of personal responsibility, all kinds of things that we can do to motivate each other to work for our own enlightened self-interest and reject prejudice in all directions. As long as the supposed moral and intellectual leaders of our country preach that if we need money it is OK to take from those who have it, and that if I have a problem it is because somebody else did something evil to me, that is going to make it difficult to keep ourselves safe against criminal violence. But, while attacking the root causes of crime with great enthusiasm, we should recognize that crime will not disappear today or even tomorrow, and we should be prepared to fight crime, to shoot back, to warehouse the bad people in jail for a time, to take active measures to protect ourselves. The great Englishman, Winston Churchill, spoke of defense as the first duty of a government; let’s remember that, and although we need to be careful not to let the government become more dangerous than the criminals, let’s not be so careful that we keep the government from doing any good.

The comment let the police "beat a few of them"is one of the problems.if the police would have been doing their jobs and arresting criminals instead of torturing innocent minorities into false confessions maybe they could go after the real criminals...its not a "black thing"crime is universal" how people cant see the connection between racism, poverty and crime is beyond me..its as bright as day..these people need jobs and opportunities to better themselves and help their families instead of fighting over crumbs..maybe thats what the powers that be want them to do..we have to know better then to kill each other for nothing,i guess if people are told for hundreds of years they are not anything after a while they will strike out or hurt themselves, whites seem to have no idea that they are part of the problem ,now will they be part of the solution?Institutionalized racism sure did not help our cities and is a big part of the problem, the frustration with the economy and as stated earlier ,the lack of opportunities just makes people more jumpy and irritable. Is it a coincidence all of this is happening on Pres.Bush's watch? He seems oblivious to our pain until it all comes back to hunt him , karma affects everyone,do good and it will come back to you,do wrong and bad things will happen, it goes for all, no matter what color. This is a time for prayer in this city and world peace these days. The warmongers are happy that we are killing ourselves that is less work they have to do.Fight to live, not to die.

It is obvious that all people should be treated equally under the law, although it is also obvious they are not. But the pure truth is that we will never cut our crime rate as long as we all abide by the "mafia" "Code of Silence" that we've all come to accept as a way of life. This "never rat on your own" mentality creates an impossible situation for our society and for the police and justice system. People know that family and friends are committing crimes, and sit by and say its OK until they get caught. We can't possibly have enough police, enough cameras, enough surveilance, enough etc, etc, etc to stop all criminal activity. And frankly, there is probably more "white-collar" crime that goes unreported than violent crime. Until we decide that we are fed up with criminal activity of all kinds by everyone, even people we know, we'll never get a handle on the problem.
Also, until a Constitutional amendment is enacted that ensures that the "truth" is ALWAYS acceptable in a court of law, we'll be putting known criminals back out onto the streets. Regardless of how real truth is obtained, it is still the truth and should be allowed. Those that use illegal methods to do it should be prosecuted for that crime separately for violating that law, not just throw out the facts!

TELL NEIGHBORS TO HAVE NEIGHBOR HOOD WATCH AND INFORM CPD OF EVERY ILLEGAL INCIDENT AS IT OCCURS ! YEAH, JUST TELL ON EVERY CRIMINAL ACTIVITY W/O REWARD ! BECAUSE, IF YOU DON'T TELL YOU OR FAMILY MAY NEXT VICTIM OF A SERIOUS CRIME !

Stop the war on drugs. The end of prohibition pretty much ended gang violence in the past and it will pretty much end gang violence today.

FREE Birth control for everyone 12 and up. Poverty and crime have high correlations with preteen and teen pregnancies. There are too many 14 year olds keeping and trying to raise a child... A child raising a child will continue this vicious cycle.

The Challenge to Chicago Schools and other leaders are the same.
They MUST Reclaim the successful prevention and intervention programs!

"Once again, we watch our urban youth die in areas where there used to be full time proven crime prevention and crime intervention efforts from the group CeaseFire before their funding was cut. And once again our leaders will address this matter today without addressing why these proven prevention and intervention efforts of CeaseFire remain unfunded. Maybe these leaders can also address how the new groups that are being funded have yet to provide the same prevention and intervention efforts once provided by CeaseFire. So today, my response is the same as it was to the same question raised last week when acts of violence and killings of our Urban youth ALSO occurred in areas once successfully covered by the prevention and intervention programs of CeaseFire. Today the news coverage areas may change but the issues of the ongoing lack of successful prevention and intervention remain the same. My pain remains the same"

Leaders Playing Politics With CeaseFire Funding Directly Contribute In Causes of Death,
and Continues To Put Inner City Children At Risk

Unnecessary shootings and deaths have occurred in our inner city neighborhoods and schools where the group CeaseFire used to have full time intervention efforts. How is it that our various leaders can continue to make public calls for the shootings and killings to stop, yet continue to play politics with programs that once successfully helped prevent shootings and killings, especially at our Chicago Public Schools. These days, it appears that CeaseFire only has the resources to mobilize for vigils and marches AFTER another unnecessary shooting or murder. The pain and frustration for CeaseFire members who show up and lead prayer vigils and marches in the exact areas where they used to brag of the success of their intervention efforts.

As a CeaseFire volunteer, I watched in pain, frustration and anger, the various media reports after the recent shooting and killing at Crane High School. There were the CeaseFire banner and leaders out front leading a march on the westside, but it was the interviews I seen of CeaseFire members indicating they knew of building tensions at the school but no longer had the resources to properly intervene as they used to. They indicated that they also informed local school and other community leaders of the rising tensions at the school, yet NOBODY seemed prepared to intervene and possibly prevent an act of violence or death.

No one seemed to respond to prevent further acts of violence after a student was severely beaten prior to the student being killed. But again, CeaseFire funds were cut and their former prevention efforts removed, but there was no other effort in place to successfully intervene with what was clearly identified by former CeaseFire workers as a troubled area about to explode at Crane. So there was no efforts to provide the necessary prevention, yet leaders from every level show up after the killing. They committed to raise reward funds, but why not the same effort to secure successful PREVENTION efforts!.

The Governor can find an extra million dollars to help restore an historic church, recreates a new funding source and program for neighborhood anti crime efforts, The Mayor missed an opportunity to use new grant money from Bank of America, The City has found millions of new dollars to settle police brutality suits, The Mayor is raising new dollars to secure The Olympics, but we are still missing the boat when it comes to securing adequate funding for successful crime intervention programs in key neighborhoods and our local schools. We seem to be playing politics with the lives of our young people.

With all due respect to the upcoming marches against easy access to guns which is a long term legislative process, we can provide "RIGHT NOW" dollars for groups like CeaseFire to restore their successful intervention efforts. I surely hope we are not just going to adjust to CeaseFire having limited resources to lead vigils and marches after more shootings and killings, especially when they have the ability to help prevent the crimes with proper funding. I hope this message falls on the proper ears and gets the proper response before we find ourselves yet again, watching CeaseFire lead a vigil or march after another shooting or killing in an area where they once had successful full time intervention efforts.

we all know this answer, but the 'town hall' meeting dont.
# 1. liberal judges keep the money flowing in the courts..in and out in and out.
2. mandatory 10 years for gun holding
3. life for killing one person, with out parole
4. dead beat dads, show your guts, you brought these kids in the world, stop acting like one yourself
5. and you know the gangbangers, start calling the cops, instead of hiding in the house waiting for the next shot.
6. community leaders like the photo op, but dont care bout you, you have to make the difference.

WHAT EVER HAPPEN TO AN EYE FOR AN EYE.....MAYBE SOCIETY SHOULD GO BACK TO CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT......INSTEAD OF SENDING PEOPLE WHO KILL TO LIFE SENTENCES......GIVE THEM THE CHAIR, PETTY CRIME ....GO TO WHERE YOU LIVE AND CLEAN STREET, CUT GRASS, PICK THOSE BEER BOTTLE, AND CANS AROUND YOUR AREA.......DO SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR YOU COMMUNITY

"Stop the war on drugs. The end of prohibition pretty much ended gang violence in the past and it will pretty much end gang violence today."

I've heard this before, but, something is missing: What about the mentality of those doing the violence? Ok, so you make their "business" legal. You still have violent people with varying feelings of self-worth. You will still have situations where a former gangbanger will have difficulty getting work because of his/her past (What's he gonna put on his resume? "Yes, I was a former 'banger, I engaged in target practice, drug sales, the occasional beating of rivals...". You will still have situations where young men in particular, with no father figure, will find one on the streets. Stopping the "war on drugs" will allocate police resources, and possible create a new class of "legitimate" businessmen, that's about it. All of the other problems will remain, and I'm not sure this city, state, or nation knows what to do about them.

We must create "Real Programs" that would be able to challenge the "Pressure of the Streets". In short at some point we have to meet with Gang Members, Leaders, and Chiefs.

Senator Obama said he would meet with Terrorists to discuss Peace, I say why not meet with Gang Members, Leaders, and Chiefs to discuss Peace?

oh you poor liberals. cry me a river, stand there and watch as your friends brain is wiped off your sleeve. And watch as the police cant beat a confession out of a guilty party, or cant beat the info they need out of someone and solve it and get justice for the VICTIM!!! Instead you feel that crimminal has rights, tell me, if you were a everyday individual, why are you afraid if a police officer asks a question? I have never been question in a crime.... I have lived in Little Village on 27th and Trumbull and in this neighborhood for 37 years!!! Maybe the liberals need crackheads and dealers, and drive by's in winettka, so they know what kind of a warzone it is out there, yet crimminals have more rights than the victim. !

IN Jersey City there is about three killings per day, this is very sad, what can be done as oppose to what is being done is crazy, need more serious help from our public officials:

Anger management classes and Afro history should be required in all CPS curricula. Teens should learn that picking up a loaded gun and shooting someone who is the same color as they are is like killing themselves or someone in their families. They should know their history, including the Atlantic slave trade, the Harlem Renaissance, 47th Street corridor in Chicago, the settling of Chicago. They need to realize that there is so much more to the world than Gangsta rap, selling drugs on the street corner, and packing pistols. They need to learn about self love. And if they're really sick and in need of mental health meds and/or counseling, these supportive services should be given as well, free of charge to those who cannot afford them.

What really needs to happen is a new law to be enforced to sentence anyone doing drive bys or other senseless acts of murder to be put to death . Have up to one year to appeal then hook em up to sparkie

I am a 38 year old black male that grew up in a hostile environment on Chicago's lower south side in the 70's and 80's. Although my escape and outlet from gangs and violence was facilitated by active parents that loved me, it made me less attracted to living a high risk lifestyle. Sure, I got into my share of trouble but none that involved police visiting my home, nor the type where one on my enemies wanted to see me put 6 feet under.
Let's face it, today's urban youth are contending with idiotic pressures unlike any my generation faced in the 80's. It is evident that young teens are more concerned with making fast money, obtaining useless possessions to boost self esteem and not holding themselves accountable for their actions. These young guys today have a distorted vision of what manhood is. Tragically, I don't think there is anything that our community can do to eradicate the vicious cycle of juvenille crime as a whole. But I do believe if everyone teaches one young man in his/her family that he must arm himself with education/reading: Not knowing how to read prevents a young man to articulate himself, especially when he's angry. An angry or frustrated young man who cannot not effectively communicate with others will resort to violence to express himself. Once this angry/frustrated young man commits his first felony, it is too late. This guy is in the system and forced to commit crimes, i.e.: armed robbery, home invasion, dope selling, rape and murder to earn a living. Once he has two or three strikes, he is incarcerated as an adult for the maximum length of time depending on the crime.

In short, I think it's imperative that we do not lose sight on raising the children in our homes first in our attempts to save the world, because we can't. It's each one teach one, not each one teach one gang at a time...those who won't make it, simply won't make it. The educated, and those with a healthy fear consequences will not just survive, they will flourish.

God Bless...
DG

It's VERY simple:

1) Build/expand more prisons. Cook County is too small to house all the criminals.

2) Lock them up/throw away the key. Judges are tossing good cases or giving probation for things that, in other jurisdictions, would result in a lenghty sentence

3) Let the police be the police

Follow my 3-part strategy, and I guarentee a significant reduction in crime. Most crime is created by REPEAT offenders. If they are in prison, where they belong, less crime will be the result

Maricopa County Arizona should be the model towards which Cook Count strives to emulate

I believe the curfew should be 9PM for anyone under 17years old, unless you have a job or are in school. Either of the two you will have to produce evidence of so if caught. For the young adult that get into trouble they should be made to attend some sort of service counseling as well as do community service work. Depending on the trouble they got into would meausure the time-frame they would have to be committed to this. I would follow up with them getting themselves in a school or a having a job, placing them on a 1yr probation. Especially, if they are not in school and have dropped out. These young adults (18-25)living off the wall bogas are poison to the minds of the younger generation behind them. Every Public Aide recipient with teenage children should attend some sort of trainging with their child/kids to recieve it. The young mothers with babies should be made to complete training to recieve Public aide as well as continuous educational clases if they do not have a job or are in school and this should all be mandatory. Anyone standing on a street corner with a group should be locked up. People with a group of kids always in and out...should be investigated. Young teens arrested in a car should be placed to work in a community (probably outside IL-don't want conflict with their enemies) for 6 mos. or longer. Parents found using drugs with kids should be placed in jail and penalized for the arrest as well as taken off Public Assistance immediately.

It all starts at home. What happen to FAMILY? Todays world is all about SELF.....kids need to be brought up with strong parents and in a positive environment and taught goals. Parents donot want to parent these days ( well not all parents) they let their kids do an say what the y want. And if your child brings money into the home parents dont say anything..Money plays a huge part also....But kids today just want love and attention and whoever the can get it from that's where they will go regardless of the circumstances....The Police should be able to use for as long as their not abusing it and messing with those who are not criminals and threats......People need to stop living in fear and speak out. We all know who is doing what in the neighborhood, we're not blind. The churches need to be more involved also...You have so many churches popping up on every corner now...Where are these Pastors and congregations at when the killing is being committed in there neighborhoods......Why dont people March anymore...People dont do nothing until it touch close to home and their on the other side looking for answers and crying....people need to just wake up and stop talking and just do something....

I believe drugs is the problem, It appears not to be cost effective to go after the suppliers and distributors, instead lets go after the users. Round up all the users and place them in rehabilitation institutions. I believe if we eliminate the market, we can eliminate the selling demand. It's hard to identify the suppliers but we all can recognize the users. Round them all up and soon there will be no one to sell to.

the truth is its a world wide problem not a chicago hood problem. I bang and a lot of the brothers didnt come from broken homes. They had both parents, went to good schools and the whole nine. People not snitching is only keeping the cops from solving the crime it doesnt prevent a thing. Its brothers out here with attitudes of not caring about a life not even their own. Its going to take a community a whole ward to work together to slow it down because the reality is violence was here before gangbanging and a be here a lot longer. The way I see it the law created a lot of the gang problems trying to correct them. They thought they was doing something by locking up gang leaders like hoover and fort. all they did was create a thousand lil gangsters with no leadership and no fear of being punished for falling out of line. It souonds bad but real bangers no a lot of these killings would not have happened

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW GULIBLE MOST PEOPLE ARE UNTIL I READ COMMENTS LIKE THESE. I AM A GUY WHO GREW UP IN ENGLEWOOD WHO GREW UP WITH BOTH PARENTS EVEN THOUGH MY MOTHER WAS MY PRIMARY CARE GIVER. EVRY THING IS GEARED FOR THIS DESTRUCTION THAT IS HAPPENING.THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS A JOKE,THE POLICE ARE JOINED WITH THE MAFIA AND THE GOVERNMENT TO SELL DRUGS IN OUR(PEOPLE OF COLOR) NIEGHBORHOODS,THE DIETS PROMOTE POOR HEALTH AND RETARDED ATTENTION SPAN. WHEN MALCOLM X SAID AMERICA IS EATING ITS YOUNG,AND WHEN JESSIE JACKSON SAID THE COMMENT ABOUT HOW THEY PROJECTED TO BUILD MORE PRISONS(THEY LOOK AT THIRD GRADE READING LEVEL OF BLACK BOYS). I DID NOT BELONG TO A GANG AND ATTENDED COLLEGE FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE. THE TEACHERS COACHES ,CLERGY,AND ADMINISTRATORS WERE ALWAYS MAD AT ME BECAUSE I KNEW THE TRUTH. BLACKMEN WE DID NOT PROTECT OUR FAMILIES DURING SLAVERY AND WE ARE NOT PROTECTING OUR FAMILIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS SINCE THE POLICE AND GOVENMENT SLAUGHTERED THE BLACKPANTHERS. FEAR AND MISEDUCATION IS DOMINATE NOW. LOOK @ WHAT THE CLEAR CHANNEL IS DOING TO THE CHILDREN

WELL, I BELIEVE PEOPLE IN THE HOOD SHOULD TELL IN SECRET THE CPD WHO'S DOING THESE THINGS. BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE TO REMEMBER YOU MIGHT BE NEXT, WOULDN'T YOU WANT SOMEBODY TO TELL CPD IF THESE THINGS HAPPENED TO YOU OR FAMILY MEMBERS !

HEY, I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING, HERE IN CALIFORNIA I HEARD A RUMOR THAT MEXICAN GANGS IN LOS ANGELES WERE ORDER BY THEIR GANG LEADERS TO SHOT ANY BLACK PERSON, PERHAPS THE SAME IS HAPPENING IN CHICAGO? !

When the sun goes down, let the Police stay out patrolling the neighborhoods and picking up or breaking up the people standing on the corners. My husband and son are truck drivers working the night shift. I don't feel safe in my house and look out the window and see people on the corner. I call the police. Enforce curfew for all children in all neighborhoods. Bring back truant officers to get the children off the streets when they should be in school. Help...?

MANDATE SCHOOL FOR HALF OF A JAIL SENTENCE, EXAMPLE A 5 YEAR SENTENCE SHOULD CARRY A 2 1/2 YEAR SCHOOL SENTENCE OR DO THE FULL SENTENCE. IT IS CHEAPER TO EDUCATE THAN INCARCERATE. EMPLOY THE PEOPLE OF HIGH CRIME AREAS, SO THEY DON'T LOOK TO CRIME AS A MEANS TO MAKE A LIVING. WHEN RESOURSES ARE TAKEN AWAY CRIME WILL RISE. IF YOU'VE NOTICED, EVERY THING IS ABOUT MONEY. A CHILD CAN'T GO TO THE PARK DISTRICT ANYMORE WITH OUT PAYING. I BLAME THE MAYOR, BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT THE PARKS ARE FOR THE PEOPLE,WHAT PEOPLE? THOSE WHO CAN PAY. NOT FAIR. IT WAS FREE TO THOSE BEFORE, WHY CHARGE NOW? CHILDREN HAVE NO PLACE TO GO, SI IDLE MINDS ARE JUST IDLING WAITING FOR AN OFFER. BRING BACK BOXING FOR FREE. BRING BACK SOCIAL CENTER IN THE SCHOOLS, BRING BACK BASEBALL, BASKET BALL ETC FOR THE PARK DISTRICTS TO COMPETE AGAINST OTHER PARK DISTRICTS, IT'S BETTER THAN TURF VS TURF. BUILD MORE SKATING RINKS ROLLER AND ICE. THERE HAS BEEN A CRIME INCREASE ON THE NORTHSIDE SINCE RAINBO CLOSED. CHILDREN NEED PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO. MENTORS, CHURCHES, COLLEDGES, AND SOCIAL CLUBS HAVE A PART TO PLAY OR WE ALL PAY.

One of the first steps, I believe, in solving this ongoing issue of gangs, drugs, and violence is providing better education and resources for under-developed schools. Maybe if kids wanted to be in school and got more out of it, they wouldn't be turning to these things.

Several things:
1) PARENTING is a necessity. A PRIORITY. Where are your children?? What are they doing?? Call the cops if they're gangbanging instead of pretending to ignore it.
2)Free birth control - for the love of god would kids please stop having kids!!!
3)Line 'em up and shoot 'em. You raped a child? Boom you're dead. You did a drive by? Boom, you're dead. Kinda like the wild west times.
4)Get those afterschool resources and activities back! Volunteer parents!

First and foremost, Mayor Daley isn't doing all that he could to protect our children.Instead of stalling and claiming that we need more and/or better gun laws the mayor's office should be focusing on increasing the already existing programs that there are for children. Face it gang members, drug dealers, and all those who highly disregard human life don't really care what laws are in place. Therefore, we as a society need to hold parents more accountable for their childrens, beause after all children are a parents responsibility. Also as a society we need to give kids more respect and responsibility which will in turn help create more positive and constructive members of scoiety. Children have more potential than adults, which is why they should be treated more maturely to learn the value of adulthood and want to become more productive members of society. This is not an issue to be taken lightly, we need to address this head on.

Fathers need to be involved in their son's lives. They need to spend some quality time with their sons. Five minutes of your time talking with them (not to) is amazingly affective.
Have your kids help with cutting the grass, wash the car and other things around the house. But, work with them doing the things that must get down. You're spending time with them, teaching them life skills and getting done what needs to be done around the house.
Quit saying "it takes a village to raise a child".
It takes a mother and a father!
Quit saying there's nothing for these kids to do. The parks, churches and schools have programs, but parents don't take their kids at an early age to these programs to teach them how to use their idle time. When they get older, they don't know how to keep busy.

Truth and reconsiliation: that is the only answer. If Chicagoans truly wish to save their communities, the only option left is to tell the truth, the real truth- It's the one thing they haven't tried yet.

For example: Chicago has the highest number of sub-prime loans in America; it also has the highest taxes in America. These are not attractive qualities for a city to have, especially not for a city which may soon be facing a recession. There is no logical reason for why housing prices should continue to climb as values and sales fall. This is a fraud.

Nowadays, people want a fair house at an honest price and they're not going to fall for the same old tricks. Consumers should be treated as though they are capable of rational thought. Besides, offering unnecessarily risky loans to over-qualified applicants for its own sake is both immoral and cruel; not to mention, dumb. Chicago is moving in the wrong direction.

It seems that Chicago has two of everything: two baseball teams; two school systems; two police departments; two housing markets; two legal systems. We could save hundreds of millions of dollars per year by consolidating these systems into one of each.

The city also has an image problem: our children are being attacked at an impressive rate, with no solution in sight- No one can be blamed when a child is harmed except for those who would choose to harm a child.

This is not the year 1708; it is the year 2008. We live in the age of international flight, e-mail, cell phones, and electronic recording devices. Information travels half-way around the world in less than an instant. How did the Olympic commitee know about what's been going on here in Chicago? Well, they were here; they bought plane tickets; they looked around. These are professional businessmen. The decisions they make affect the lives of millions of people- not just athletes, but engineers, technicians, security officers and spectators as well. They are not going to take chances on a possibly unstable, possibly dangerous enviroment.

They have also been in this business long enough to be able to tell a hoax from a true conflict of interest, so it is highly unlikely that they would be convinced by the accusations of just one person. They saw this city. The whole world saw this city.

Do Chicago's residents really want young black men to get jobs? Fine. First, lower taxes; and then, stop patronage hiring. A young black man has no incentive to apply for work if he knows that his application will simply be ignored or discarded. Our employment system needs to be more transparent and reliable. Why would an employer pay more for labor when he could just as easily pay less? The only true route to higher wages is education- this is why Chicago's high school dropout rate is unforgivable. Any person who excells in education should be revered and lauded, regardless of class or upbringing.

The presence of control- without insight, leadership and knowledge- will lead only to confusion, frustration and failure. If Chicagoans are going to create prosperity and improve their economy, these are the rules that must be followed immediately: First, do not ever, ever, infringe on the rights of an American citizen. That would be in direct violation of the constitution of the United States of America. We should go from freedom to freedom; not from oppression to further oppression; Second, do not harass private residences. Sound travels through space. It also lowers property values; Third, do not lie when you know that you have been caught red-handed doing something you know you should not have been doing, and do not blame others for your mistakes.

With the events of the past year unfolding into a new light, the world has come to know all of Chicago's secrets. By coming clean, this city would not only be confirming what the whole world probably knows already, but it would be helping to strenghten its economy. This is important. Let us make Chicago a better place to live for everyone.

The spooks try to cry and say oh the police are beating innocent minorities. Well I got news for ya, dont do 3/4 of the stuff you do. Its not a color thing, its just the spooks are different and they are mostly guilty. I still say we start abusing and beating crimminals!! we will see a difference

Mayor Daley and the developers are just itching to white wash the drug and gang infested neighborhoods. While the politicians, preachers and community leaders do more of the same for the past forty years (i.e. march, pray, chant, police roll call, make all those sociological excuses), the people are receiving more of the same-gang violence snuffing out more people's lives. With the e-coli beach season, eventual seller's house market comeback and the 2016 Olympics, you'll see part two of the white washing very soon. Part 1 already occurred with the project tear-downs. Wake up, before not just more lives are lost, but more housing is too. Wake up and starting killing the murderers and rapists now!

I'm seriously surprised by some of these outrageous responses! I'm fairly young, 23, born and raised in Chicago, living most of my life in Englewood and the rest in South Shore. I know firsthand that the problem with crime in the city is NOT gang violence, even though that tends to be a result. The media blames the epidemic of social and economic warfare on gangs just so they can paint an easier target, and the public eats it up. Instead of focusing all your views on violence and crime, thinking the solution lies in 'lining people up and shooting them', maybe you should look at the underlying factors of these problems, especially in low-income areas. 90% of the kids are being raised in single-parent homes. The communities are filled with drugs and guns, easily accessible to young children. Alcoholism and drug addiction, among children and parents, play a huge role in the problem too. Kids are neglected at home to the point of joining a street or community "organization" (gang) to build ties, their own version of a family. Everyday, we deal with issues like police brutality, unlawful treatment, even social and enviromental "terrorism" that happens all over the city. Poverty is plaguing most parts of the city nowadays. Movies and music videos portray street life as "glamorous", making the problem even worse! Even the plausible solution of 'introducing people to Jesus' is NOT HAPPENING - there have been community churches on almost every-other corner on the southside, and it hasn't stopped any crime or murder from happening! And instead of addressing the issue head-on, people retreat to their suburban 10-bedroom houses and drive around in a different car every day, making statements and pointing fingers like they know what's really happening in the streets of Chicago! Get real...

The best way to fix the problems of Chicago's "hoods" is to set a good example for the children, instead of running away from the problem and leaving it for someone else to clean up, or leaving your children to be raised by these same "hoods" that you condemn! Give kids positive role models to look up to. Don't tell them to go to school - SHOW THEM the benefits of going to school by attending school yourself, or at least by trying to get some kind of high school diploma or college degree. Don't tell your kids to get a job and make money, expecting them not to go out and sell drugs - SHOW THEM the good effects of maintaining employment by actually getting and keeping a job. Stop complaining about the problems. Instead, come up with some real solutions. If you do something as extreme as "kill all the murders and rapists", you're still going to be left with the same problems you started off with! I agree with the guy who spoke of the police and FBI making huge mistakes when they locked up Larry Hoover and Jeff Fort - the media portrayed these men as merciless killers and extortionists, but in reality, they kept order and discipline between their followers. By taking them out, the police just made the "gang problem" a lot worse. Participate in community outreach programs, or even "neighborhood watch" groups - when you don't, you only advocate the "stop snitchin'" slogan. Play a role in the community to make it better, instead of throwing complaints and insults from the sideline...

I was once your age and thought the same way. We have tried it your way for the past forty years. Have you looked at the Chicago Defender, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune archives from 1968 onwards? Despite what others and you have proposed, what has that accomplished? We have more of the same, with different people making the same excuses -kids don't have "this" which makes it ok to do "that".

I agree with you on some things (i.e. not solving all the problems, churches). Executions won't solve all of the problems, but would make the areas you mention a LOT safer. Others problems can't be addressed, until people feel safe enough to walk out their their front door at 2 PM. How can anyone discuss anything, with stray bullets flying through the homes, schools and outside?

Hoover, Fort, Lloyd and others didn't keep the peace. They and others started (or re-enforced) those gangs with monies received from President Nixon and others to expand their "operations" which resulted in more lives lost from more violence.

The churches aren't going to address violence either, considering how a lot of them are with Daley and/or the gangs.

1. STOP the social programs that only provide a crutch and have for 4 generations and have been NO BENEFIT.

2. Increase stiff jail sentences for those that make decisions against society. They must pay the consequences for their decisions.

3. STOP playing the blame game. BLame the gov't. Blame the lack of jobs. Blame the lack of education. Blame the poor neighborhood.

4. Take responsibility for your own neighborhoods and quit relying on others to correct your problem.

5. Increase police powers with gang intervention and engagement rules when responding to violent crime prone neighborhoods.

6. Accept the more of the gang bangers, unemployeed, welfare recipient, 12 children being raised by granny, that are out of our society forever............the better our society will be.

7. Parents take some responsibility:
- Don't let your kids have role models that can't speak English correctly.
- Do you know where your children are at all times?
- Do you know their friends?
- Do you let your children disrespect others or their property?
- Are YOU a role model to your children?
- Do you get involved in their education?
- Are you clean and demonstrate a concern for the society that you live in?
- Do you demand your children conduct themselves properly by speaking correctly, not emulating rappers or bangers, politeness, and respect for women?
- Do you know your child's teacher?
- Do you play the blame game or advise your children hard work, good studies, and being a good member of society, can lead to success?
- Do you choose your child's clothes and demand they wear what you think is appropriate?
- Monitor the music and shows they listen and watch?
- Do you have friends, relatives, and associates that are solid role models to your children?

If you are a parent that does not believe your involvement will change your child's future then look at others that have come from worse backgrounds that did succeed.

If you are a parent that want your children to be more black than American, then move to another country.

IT IS SIMPLY DISGUSTING THIS SITUATION HAS SPREAD IN 4 GENERATIONS TO EVERY CITY IN AMERICA.

MORE AMAZING IS THIS DISEASE IS BLAMED ON EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE CORE CAUSE...............CULTURE.

HOW ABOUT LOOKING IN THE MIRROR AND CONSIDER THE CULTURE?

THE BLACK CULTURE IS A SPREADING CANCER OF EXPECTING GOVERMENT FREEBIES VERSUS HARD WORK, VIOLENCE, POOR PARENTING SKILLS, TEENAGE PREGNANCY, AND NEIGHBORHOOD DESTRUCTION.

Part of the reason we have so many shootings in the hoods is that the court system is set on "Recycle". They get arrested, the attorney plea bargans it down to nothing, and BANG, they are back out on the streets!! If you ACT like a bottom feeder, thats' all you'll ever be.
The "3 strikes & you are out" seems to work fairly well. You screw up by NOT getting your head screwed on & "you are outta here"!
Now let me just say, I am NOT for throwing people in jail for just any old reason. I mean, I FULLY understand that life in the big city is TOUGH! I was born & partially raised in L.A.,( no, not Lower Alabama)and went back in the mid 70's. But, I DO know this: It STARTS in the home. If Dads' not there or Moms' not there, that has a BIG impact on the way kids think.(And an old fashioned butt-kick at the right time never hurts but for a few minutes & it DOES WONDERS on the thought process!)
If the parents have a "I don't give a crap" attitude, how can they expect the kids to?! Granted there are those that are the spawn of Satan, but, they are a rare case.
Also the school system has to care that they are in school to LEARN, not just warm a seat. If the teachers & the school system don't care, it again becomes a moot point.
Have you ever noticed that kids who are involved in a church RARELY get arrested? Thats because God keeps that head straight. He has WONDERFUL ways to correct you when you mess up,too! Ever heard the expression "God'll get you for that"? Believe you me he will & does. I've received my share of attitude adjustments thru the years.
Grandma always said:"If you've got God & guts, you'll get the Glory. But you gotta work for it!! ANYTHING worth having, is worth working for!!

Nuke Em!

In regaurds to the messege towards the top about how Police are beating Innocent Minorities Honestly since I have Been a Chicago Paramedic I notice that its the mexican killing the mexicans and blacks killing the blacks and the blacks killing the mexicans and the mexicans killing the blacks or better yet I should say hispanics because Puerto Ricans as well and if you havn't noticed Black nor Hispanic are even Minorities anymore and all the trouble is happening in the Black and Hispanic neighborhoods not the white neighborhoods. There is no white ghetto in chicago nor other suburbs its always the Hispanic or black Neighborhoods that smell Look like shit and have a thousand crack heads on the corner. And its funny a black guy can walk through my neighborhood but a white man in the Black hood or hispanic that get Gang signs thrown up at them rocks thrown through windows It's a bunch of bs
