UPDATE: The mayor's office actually responded to this news, assuring us that Rahm does not, in fact, like Nickelback.
The first Chicago teachers strike in a quarter century began just yesterday but already is getting downright dirty.
To wit: this protest sign captured and posted on Twitter ...
Poor Nickelback. The lunk-headed alt-rockers ("How You Remind Me," "Someday") have become the butt of countless jokes in recent years -- their very name coming to symbolize all that is mainstream, lame and dumb.
No doubt Creed was very thankful when they came along.
The word "nickelback" is defined on the crowd-sourced Urban Dictionary variously as "the effect of becoming tremendously successful despite having no talent what so ever," "a tool used to make one's ears bleed" and "the source of ALL evil."
When the Canadian group was scheduled to play during halftime at the game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers last year in Detroit, an online petition to have them removed from the gig went viral. It was unsuccessful, though, and the band took to the field -- to a half-hearted mix of applause and boos.
Earlier this year, the band took to fighting back against the jokes on Twitter, which didn't last and (shock) didn't go well.
It must be just a matter of time before other signs appear on the line, like "Rahm to CTU: Call me, maybe" and "Rahm: Somebody that we used to know."
At the very least, I encourage all CTU strikers to enliven the marching by watching this tutorial on how to horse-dance like PSY ...

Maybe this has to do with the fact that NAFTA was Rahm's baby while he was at the Clinton White House. Think about all the decent paying low to mid-skilled jobs that were lost to this assault on workers. Now he says that ALL kids need to go to college to compete in today's global economy. We all know that not everyone is cut out to go to college. Even with a degree there are no guarantees. Now he is now attempting to do the same thing to the teaching profession. He needs to be stopped!
By the way, guess what he did once he left the Clinton White House? He took a position with an investment bank (without a degree in finance) and made 18 million through insider deals in only two and a half years!
Strikers were being kind to rahm. There is so much more to say about this person and none of it is good. If you think this is below the belt, did you write about the constant vilification of Chicago teachers spewing out of rahm's mouth from the minute his plane landed from DC? The continual insults he tosses out towards teachers and the CTU that are repeated as "fact" by the phone-it-in journalists in this town? The lies that he and his "people" put forth as news? All this from a man who wouldn't know a CPS child unless they were lined up behind him by his handlers.
He knows nothing about teaching, the challenges faced by the children every day, the challenges faced by their teachers every day. Yet he wants to dictate educational policy through his billionaire board members. Laughable if it wasn't so toxic.
Amazing!!! How come if you disagree with any educator you are wrong....I challenge the educators to come in to the private sector - with over 16% real un/under employment and make their demands. Have they seen the recent report that family health insurance costs over 15,000/year...and the average employee pays 4,300/year.
I understand when you spend someone else's money it is easy. But, this is my money and I say get back to work or we can hire people who will. Oh, by the way, Reagan replaced the irreplacable air traffic controllers.
Teachers are highly valued, but not invaluable.
Jonas,
Because you are being exploited in the private sector, this means teachers have to succumb to mandates and poor working conditions from CPS. What is good for you should be good for everybody. Is that what you are saying? Rather than just accept the fact that the "private sector" workers have to bend over and take it, do something about it.
What kind of car do you drive? Because you drive that model, I guess I need to drive it, too.
By the way, teachers ARE taxpayers and they are probably paying your salary because they buy goods and services from your employer.
@jonas: I pay my taxes and it's my money too. I support the teachers who have the students well being in mind.
