I recently responded to that question for the blog Writers Read, which is associated with Campaign for the American Reader, "an independent initiative to encourage more readers to read more books."

My answer is here.

As far as your list of the top 4 music books of all time, what did you think of "Rip It Up and Start Again"? I've read that a couple of times and would probably put that right up at the top of my personal list.

Though I haven't read it for a very long time, I think England's Dreaming may be one of the best rock books out there.

I also love Jim's book on psychedelic rock.

The New 13th floor Elevators Tome Eye Mind is one of the best rock bios I have read in a long time. Very thorough and enlightening. I've been a fan of them for 20 years and it was surprising how little I knew about them as a group. Also the compendium Britpop! is a good read too!
