Inside the Family Secrets mob trial with Sun-Times reporter Steve Warmbir

Why Schiro's sentence is bad news for Calabrese Sr.

On Monday, mob associate Paul Schiro got sentenced for a murder that a federal jury never found him liable for.

This is bad news for mob killer Frank Calabrese Sr., who is to be sentenced Wednesday in the Family Secrets case.

Here's why:

Schiro was sentenced after the Family Secrets jury found him guilty of racketeering but could not reach agreement on the one murder prosecutors accused him of.

U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel found that prosecutors still proved Schiro was involved in the murder of his friend, Emil Vaci, by a preponderance of the evidence, so Schiro was sentenced for it.

Yes, this sounds unusual, but it is legal in federal court.

For Calabrese Sr., a jury found he was liable for seven murders but couldn't reach agreement on another six.

Despite that finding, Calabrese Sr., though, is likely to be sentenced for all 13 murders, given the judge's ruling in Schiro's case.

Practically speaking, Calabrese Sr. won't see any difference in his sentence since he's going to be spending the rest of his life behind bars anyway.

But the only victory Calabrese Sr. saw at trial may soon evaporate.

And those families of the six murder victims that the jury couldn't decide on may just get some sense of justice at long last.

Calabrese will die in prison which, sadly, is the best thing that could happen at this point. Even if he were to have some religious or moral change-of-heart, and - because of it - take responsibility for his horrible life and apologize to the family members of the people he killed, he should never see freedom ever again. Whatever will vindicate the interests of the family members is what should happen.

It's too bad Mr. Mars can't be there.

whether or not he is found liable for 7 murders or all 13, frank will be sentenced to over 100 years.....this guy and his crew have lost the priveledge of making peoples lives miserable from this point forward.....its just a shame reading some of this that some people still dont get how these guys terrorized people and extorted money from anyone they thought probably wouldn't run to the feds....
