Outfit financial snapshot: $20 million and change

Federal prosecutors have put a price tag on how much money they'll be seeking from the five men convicted in the Family Secrets mob trial last year.

The grand total: $20,258,566.

That figure represents how much money the Outfit made since the 1960s, that the government was able to trace, based on evidence at trial.

Some readers may initially react to that number and say, "That's all?"

But it's important to understand what that number represents -- and what it doesn't.

The number comes from evidence introduced at the Family Secrets trial, and you have to understand that the trial looked in detail at the inner workings of only a portion of the Outfit.

What's more, the number is based on estimates provided by government witnesses at trial. The trial featured just a few bookmakers, for instance. It's not as if every bookie who was paying street tax to the Outfit since the 1960s took the stand and gave testimony.

The figure also reflects what the government was able to trace. By their very nature, illegal activities are often designed to make the proceeds from them difficult to track or follow.

The government itself calls the number "very conservative."

The figure came in the filing of crooked former Chicago cop Anthony "Twan" Doyle. He's the first of the five men convicted at trial who is scheduled to be sentenced. He's up Oct. 1.

Steve, Looks Like The German Made it out of this World, Scott Free,
By Dying so he won`t spend the rest of his life in prison. The After Life for this man may be another story.

Sure. But they'll never be able to retrieve the money. They'll never be able to cover the expenses for the trial and FBI work, so, sorry to say, it's just a nice media tag.
